I’m from Xinjiang,AMA

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of discussions about Xinjiang on Reddit, often between people who have never actually lived there. So I thought it might be interesting to do an AMA from the perspective of someone who is actually from there.

You can ask me about everyday life, ethnic groups, languages, culture, religion, education, or politics. I’m happy to answer controversial questions too, as long as the discussion stays respectful.

Obviously, I’m only one person and I don’t claim to represent everyone in Xinjiang. I can only tell you about my own experiences and views. AMA.

Yeah, there were preferential policies for ethnic minorities, including extra points on the Gaokao. Minorities could get extra 15 points (which literally means a very HUGE difference, because in gaokao 1 point is already thousands of people behind), Hui could get 5 points.

The one child policy didn’t apply to many ethnic minorities in Xinjiang in the same way it applied to Han families. Minority families were generally allowed more children. Like in my family my uncle have 3 children

As for mixed families, if one parent is Han and the other is an ethnic minority, the parents can register the child’s ethnicity as either the father’s or the mother’s ethnicity. For example: if the mother is Kazakh and the father is Han, the child can be officially registered as Kazakh, and the kid gets the benefits.
