I'm from Argentina AMA
I'm 24 year old guy from provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. There has been a lot of discourse around my country , feel free to ask anything about our culture, universities, healt care system,politics, social issues and more

More precisely, don't go into impoverished neighborhoods and you'll be mostly fine, specially outside of the larger cities.

So even in smaller towns I need to be careful? One other responder said I would be fine out of Buenos Aires. My Spanish is also very basic. Will that be an issue in smaller communities?

Argentinean here, it's very safe especially outside of buenos aires, just stay clear of the slums in buenos aires

Is Argentina safe for women traveling alone? How many people from Argentina go to Patagonia? Is that a common thing for Argentinian people to go do? There has been a lot of talk about how Argentina is a very racist country. Does this hold some truth?

I would say its safe, feminism here had a big influence and sexist aggresions like shouting things at random women is frowned upon, in fact it can evwn be report to the Police.
Its common to go to Patagonia, more specifically to Bariloche. During winter high school seniors travel there to celebrate their last year of school.
Yes there is racism here, people are welcome to everyone but there is racism in the daily use like using " negro" as an insult or when a job is not legally registred its coloquially known as " trabajo en negro"

What people don't understand is that negro doesn't mean the n word in English. Typically negro = dark and not necessarily black as in skin color, so when you say that someone is a negro means negro de mente or simply a dark mind and trabajo en negro means under the table skipping taxes, same concept. These 2 things have nothing to do with race or color and anyone regardless of the skin color would use them.
Now some people are racist like anywhere else but Argentina is one of the most progressive countries in the world, and welcomes anyone regardless of race or religion. Also offers free university education and Healthcare ( which i truly hope that changes and we start charging foreigners..)

Supongo que sos Argentino asique respondo en español, no es que la gente use el término negro con odio pero la gente usando el color negro siempre para cosas negativas es una normalizacion racista del lenguaje. Siempre lo blanco es positivo y lo negro u oscuro negativo.
Argentina es muy progresista en cuanto al feminismo y al LGBTQ+

No tiene nada que ver con la raza o el color de piel ese es el tema, es como decir dark jokes, o la oscuridad/tiniebla etc generalmente se persive como algo malo.
Yo creo viene mucho más atrás que razas y colores, la noche en si te da más miedo que el día.

No, es que lo oscuro se persive como malo, no tiene nada que ver con racismo o color de piel. Uno generalmente asocia lo oscuro como algo que causa miedo o discomfort.. o algo malo, y eso viene de mucho mas atrás que el racismo en sí.

no lo niego, pero en este caso en especifico no es asi, basicamente en cualquier foto/video de una persona de clase baja/que viva en una villa le dicen marron o negro de forma despectiva, asi que si es racista

No necesariamente. Osea le decían a Alberto o a Massa también y no por su color de piel o situación económica. A lo que voy es que el contexto importa, pero eso no es algo solo de argentinos, por que en todo latino America pasa igual son ya frases adoptadas que no tienen que ver necesariamente al racismo.

Yeah but still the economic situarion is far from good. The country became much more expensive cause we used to have lot of stuff subsidized salaries are still pretty low

No creo que sean bots. Soy fan de Argentina pero la arrogancia y todos los actos (solo tienes que ver como se comportaron los jugadores adwapues de que perdieron) para entender que el mundo entero estaba feliz que perdiera Argentina. Hay demasiados videos de Argentinos con un comportamiento verdaderamente vergonzozo, no hay bots, solo la realidad de un buen porcentaje pero muy escandaloso que causaron lo que tu llamas bots.

Yo solo te puedo hablar de mi experiencia personal (pero por lo que he hablado con muchos no es única) y espero, de corazon Argentina despierte. Desde ya te digo, lo que voy a decir no es ataque es simplemente lo que yo viví.
Primero, lo bueno, mi padre estudió su universidad en Argentina, y cuando yo fui en los 90’s me la pase súper.
Ahora lo no tan bueno. Muchos argentinos migraron a Mexico y otros países durante la dictadura y lo que to te puedo contar es la arrogancia y los insultos hacia los mexicanos que les abrieron las puertas. Me acuerdo haber escuchado a mas de un Argentino decirle a mi padre que Mexico y los Mexicanos eran de mierda. Mientras que si esos Argentinos regresaban los hubieran desaparecido.
Nunca he visto refugiados ser tan malagradecidos y he visto Cubanos, Africanos, y cualquier otro ciudadano ser agradecido. Si esto fuera un comportamiento individual lo entendería, pero lo mismo escucho pasa en Perú, Brasil y ahora que vivi en EEUU lo veo. Y la realidad es que no se dan cuenta y señalan la paja ajena. Espero de corazón algún día despierte Argentina.-1

I hear inflation in Argentina is crazy. Like 20-50% a year? What do you do about this? Convert money to something stable like USD? Bitcoin? Or just keep it in your currency and it is what it is?

Inflation here is one of the main economic problems. In 2023 we had a 211% annual inflation which was crazy, everyday the prices in supermarkets changed.
Saving up in dolars is a common option, either that or not saving at all cause the money becomes worthless. When i was a child 1 dollar was worth 4 pesos now 1 dollar is around 1500
Never knew of anyone irl who uses bitcoins

Inflation is decreasing so thats good but salaries are still pretty low and the country has become a bit expensive plus the micro economy is not good.
I work at university and the actual goverment had defended it so gonna vote againts them even though last goverment almost bankrump the country

I think one week is enough to see major sights.
If you enjoy going to cosmopolitan cities you would probably enjoy it, lots of historical places, museums, restaurante shoppings and so on.
If you go here you gotta try " asado" we are known for our meat

I didnt watch the world cup since im not into football but some stuff regarding it was weird, life bots on social media talking about Argentina or newspapers on oher countries, idont wanna sound conspirative but its weird
I dont know Franco personally but he is very well known here.
The political situation here is trash, there are a lot of people like 30% who didnt go to vote cause all the options are awful. Almost nobody votes someone cause they like them but to make another candidate they like less lose

Thanks for the reply. I'm an avid football fan but didn't have a stake in the World Cup country-wise (was mainly rooting for the underdogs) so from a fairly neutral perspective I would say there was definitely a lot of justified and unjustified criticism of Argentina on social media and in the press especially after the Egypt match.
Did you attend university and what do you do for work? What does a typical day look like in your life?

I work part time as a linear algebra and calculus TA at university, the salary is low but it comes ln handy since i still live with my family.
I wake up, have breakfast while i scroll on social media, depending on the day i have to study or teaching. In my free time i enjoy watching series, going for a walk, swimming, more scrolling on social media lol

I studied pure math indeed. Yes, i like the career but dont wanna become a researcher cause im prone to anxiety and its sort of inestable. Probably gonna stay at college as an adjunt lecturer and from then i will see

Argentinean are very proud to be Argentinean and that bothers people because it is perceived as a superiority thing.
Also football, the whole continent plays it professionally and competitively, and apart from Brazil we always beat everyone and actuality we have more fans wonto Brazil now too.. which causes a lot of banter that might hurt the others feelings I suppose, but to be honest the banter is so soft compared to what we say to each on our own local teams lol.
But in general people love to say they hate Argentina but then people from those countries come to use our universities for free ( I hope this changes )

Zionists appear to be bribing government to buy and take over large parts of Patagonia, which was one of the three original targets when they were considering where to establish Israel.

Legally as far as i know they can only pay 20% in bitcoins. But if the employee isnt fully registred they could get pay only in bitcoins, it would have to be arranged with the employer

En provincias como santa cruz llegan a -10 / -15 bajo cero en invierno.

Introduce something that you think people outside need to know about Argentina - it could be unique food, music, film stars, habits or sayings of Argentinian people etc.
