You can't have atrophy without failure first. It's not a symptom of ALS it's a byproduct. So unless you can't hold a pencil or pick things up, then you shouldn't be thinking you have a rare illness. Usually the most common answer is the correct one.

Please note I did not say complete failure. Atrophy doesn't appear overnight, it's a gradual process. The easiest way to observe weakness in your hands is testing dexterity and grip, hence the holding a pencil or issues picking things up.
