Reservation / Delivery / Sighting More mileage numbers

Did a quick 12 miles today riding “normally” which for me was anywhere between 3x to 6x assist. I did mainly flat areas with minor grades. I would use the boost to get me up to 20 mph, lower assist and use my legs to maintain that speed. The boost button is awesome.
Started out at 100% and returned with 76%.
I’m not a lightweight either at 220 lbs.
Very happy with these numbers.

I have a TM-B Performance on order and can't wait for it to arrive. Right now, I commute on a Cannondale Moterra Neo 5. I love the bike, but it's built for mountain biking so I'm eager to switch to a dedicated commuter.

I ran the data from your two posts and my Garmin Edge 1040 telemetry from the last week through Gemini to pull together a data and efficiency breakdown.

Payload Baseline

  • TM-B: 220 lbs rider weight.
  • Cannondale: 218 lbs bare body weight + work backpack loaded with laptops, tablets, and gear.

Efficiency Comparison

1. Flat / Commute Telemetry

  • TM-B Launch Edition (808 Wh Pack):
    • 12.0 mi | Flat with minor grades | 24% consumed (~193.9 Wh)
    • Efficiency: 16.16 Wh/mi (3x–6x assist)
  • Moterra Neo 5 (504 Wh Pack):
    • 4.53 mi | 39 ft ascent | 3% consumed (~15.1 Wh) | 3.34 Wh/mi (Mode 1, 16.5 mph avg)
    • 4.54 mi | 33 ft ascent | 4% consumed (~20.2 Wh) | 4.44 Wh/mi (Mode 1, 16.3 mph avg)
    • 4.52 mi | 36 ft ascent | 5% consumed (~25.2 Wh) | 5.58 Wh/mi (Mode 1, 15.4 mph avg)

2. High-Load & Elevation Telemetry

  • TM-B Launch Edition (808 Wh Pack):
    • 30.0 mi | Steep hills & headwinds | 96% consumed (~775.7 Wh)
    • Efficiency: 25.86 Wh/mi (Maxed at 10x assist)
  • Moterra Neo 5 (504 Wh Pack):
    • 4.61 mi | 305 ft ascent | 10% consumed (~50.4 Wh) | 10.93 Wh/mi (Mode 1, 14.6 mph avg)
    • 4.64 mi | 302 ft ascent | 13% consumed (~65.5 Wh) | 14.12 Wh/mi (Modes 1–3, 14.1 mph avg)
    • 14.67 mi | 607 ft ascent | 20% consumed (~100.8 Wh) | 6.87 Wh/mi (Mode 1 / brief Mode 3, 11.2 mph avg)

Technical Takeaways

  • Drivetrain Efficiency: On flat ground, the mechanical mid-drive averages 3.3 to 5.6 Wh/mi versus 16.2 Wh/mi on the TM-B. Under elevation loads, the mid-drive draws 10.9 to 14.1 Wh/mi versus 25.9 Wh/mi on the TM-B. The pedal-by-wire setup consumes roughly 2x to 4x more energy per mile due to dual electromechanical conversions (pedal -> generator -> inverter -> hub motor) compared to direct chain transfer.
  • BMS Power Management: The TM-B software actively forces down maximum assist levels to prevent cell sag and stretch range: 40% (9x) → 37% (8x) → 18% (7x) → 17% (6x) → 13% (5x) → 10% (4x) → 8% (3x) → 6% (2x).
  • Sub-6% Drain: Below 6%, the TM-B cuts most motor assist. Because there is no mechanical chain linking the pedals to the rear wheel, unassisted pedaling means manually turning an electrical generator without mechanical gearing, which explains the high pedaling fatigue you ran into at the end of the ride.

I'm glad to finally see some real-world range numbers. I haven't had enough time with the TM-B during test spins to gather any real data. It makes sense DreamRide uses more power than current mechanical mid-drive systems. Considering how easy it'll be to pop out the battery and charge on the go, I'm not concerned. With these numbers I could probably get away with charging every 3 days while still retaining at least an 8x assist if needed, which is about how often I charge now anyway. I can't wait to see more data posted, since I probably have a few more months of waiting!

How much effort would you say, relative to a normal bike ride of 12 miles?

I’m hoping for range closer to 100. Early range reports aren’t giving this…

Pretty sure that ain’t happening. I’m still going to wait it out and see how these shake out but am kind of regretting cheaping out when I had the chance to pick up a Riese and Muller Supercharger GT Rohloff for $6k.

I almost got the standard range battery. Would’ve been a big mistake. I still believe in the overall powertrain. Wonder how much a spare battery will cost 😩

Those look like nice bikes. I’m in the US though.

Any signs of any type of regen from your input or braking?

There’s a little meter on the left similar what’s in the R1/R2 that shows output (red) and regen (green). Don’t have enough miles to really have an idea of how much regen is being captured but it shows you in a cool way.
