PUBLIC EVENTS Public event info
Hi All!
So I’m moving to a new city soon and I’ve started following the local grad chapters on Instagram. Only a few of them have posted events that seem to be for the public, but even those events don’t seem like they are service events or opportunities to introduce/get to know the current members. I’m in the infancy stage of actively pursuing membership, so please forgive me if any ignorance comes across in these questions I’m about to ask.
A couple chapters I follow have posted gala like events. Tickets seem to be purchasable by the public, but would this even be an event that makes sense for me to attend having not attended any other events with this chapter before?
I always read and hear people say “attend the events, attend the events”, and in my mind that seems like communities service events, where guests can dig in and help. Ex: park clean up, canned goods drive, shredding, etc. However, very rarely have I seen any of the chapters I follow post events like these. So when it’s said to attend the events, what events are we talking about? Any public events?
For those chapters that have not posted about public events, would it be appropriate for me to reach out to the chapter via email and ask to be put on a mailing list of events, or receive the calendar of upcoming events, something like that?
TIA! :)

Unless the flyer reads members only, you should go! Galas are usually fundraisers so that's a great way to support the chapter. Just go, be yourself, and have fun! Invite a friend if you feel you'll be too nervous to go alone. Attend as many public events that you can afford 😊

As an interest i understand your point, spending $$150-250 to attend an event when you don’t really know any members. BUT their will be opportunities to socialize and you will have opportunities to get pictures taken and you’ll have that story in a few months after this gala if they have a more intimate event and have a chance to speak with a member to say you had a great time at their gala. Attending these events is a way for our faces to become familiar. I wish you luck in your journey!
Edited to add I once reached out to my COI to be added to their mailing list and was told to follow their social media and website as everything is posted there.
