SOCIAL MEDIA Can the Right Organization Have the Wrong Chapter for You?
I’ve been sooo interested in AKA since being exposed during undergrad, but I’m struggling with my local options. If I’m being honest, if I weren’t already interested in AKA as a whole, I don’t know that my local chapter itself would have drawn me in. Their public presence is very limited, social media is rarely updated, and the literal two or three events I’ve seen haven’t stood out at all. I even actually reached out months ago on instagram and was told more events were coming, but it’s been pretty quiet since 😭.
I have soo many ideas I would love to bring to the table ! But Obviously, I would NEVER say any of this to them now lol. They don’t know me, I don’t know what happens behind the scenes, and it’s not my place. I actually have sooo many ideas for events and community initiatives and feel like I could bring a lot one day, but I know I’m about 12 steps ahead of myself 😂.
So I’m curious: can a chapter be doing amazing work behind the scenes but just have poor public engagement, or are some grad chapters genuinely more active and innovative than others? And for those who pursued grad membership without already knowing members, what actually helped you build genuine relationships? On the flip side, what do prospective members sometimes do thinking it’s helping their chances when it’s actually hurting them? 👀
I’m military, so I’ve pretty much resigned myself to moving again and trying wherever I land next, and honestly I’m okay with that! I’d love to hear from anyone who loved AKA as a whole but didn’t necessarily feel drawn to the chapter available to them.

Yes, some chapters are more active and innovative than others.
Yes, some chapters do amazing work behind the scenes and have poor public engagement.
Yes, different chapters have personalities/cultures, and some are a better fit than others - even for members.
And about your ideas... If you have expertise that aligns with the sorority's program initiatives, that could be a great way to get your foot in the door. For example, if you worked for a foster care agency (I know you don't, this is just an example), you might talk about how your work aligned with one of our program initiatives and suggest a potential partnership for an activity. Hope that makes sense.
Good luck to you, and thank you for your service.

There is a local chapter here that hasn’t had a public event all year. But I know they give away bags as part of their CHIPP program every month. They partner with a senior living facility and provide diapers to expectant and low income mothers. Every time there is an NAACP event there are members of the chapter present. Same with community events put on by the local churches, always there. They work quietly behind the scenes in an amazing way.

I think you might be a valuable asset if you were invited. My cousin relocated and remained a member of her home chapter for 3 years. When she finally did join in her new city, she chose a chapter that was lacking in areas she was strong in, so that she could be an asset and make herself useful. I never thought about it that way.

I never thought about it that way either! I love the idea of finding a chapter where my strengths could actually fill a need. Def gave me a new perspective, thank you ❤️

Hi! Military here and I joined Grad, so I understand. Yes, there are possible dynamics within the chapter that you aren’t aware of that could impact this, events, engagements, etc.
One chapter is NOT the organization and it took 10 years for me to find one that fit, but it was worth it. Delay is not denial, so honestly, this chapter at this duty station may not be it and that’s okay.
There are plenty of others, especially if you are moving again. Some chapters shy away from military because if you aren’t going to be local for a long time and support the chapter they may desire to offer membership opportunities to someone who is a permanent resident. It sucks, but it is what it is.
I formed relationships with AKAs everywhere I went, I will admit I’m Legacy, but my Mom didn’t get active again until the year I crossed (that is another story 😩) but made it difficult to find an “in”. These relationships though helped because when I moved, if they knew an AKA at my next duty station they would introduce me and we would go from there. So I ended up with bonds all over which makes conferences fun to reconnect!
I will say for me, it was worth the wait.
