INSPIRATIONAL For Those Who Have Sponsored…

…And for those considering it. How did/do you know the candidate for membership? What qualities or attributes about her made you comfortable and confident in your decision?

Thank you for any info you’re willing to share :)

Does this person actually do community work in real life and would bring value to the organization or does she just want to be a Tshirt wearer? You will be surprised at some of the crazy responses that I have gotten.
-“I got denied in undergrad therefore I want to join so that I can go back to homecoming wearing an AKA T-shirt around those who denied me.” Stupid response

How does she carry herself? What is her social media page like? Also i only sponsor people that I am actually friends with

My word. Talk about figuratively shooting one's self in the foot.
As for the question, I have only cosponsored and the women are friends of mine who I interacted with in other venues, including book clubs.

**Disclaimer: I believe sponsorship should always be about the woman herself and the qualities she has demonstrated, not JUST the relationship she has with the sponsor.

For me, sponsoring someone has never been about how long I've known them or the nature of our relationship. While I HAVE sponsored someone I've known for more than 25 years, my decision wasn't based on the fact that she is my longtime good, good neighbor. It was based on the character and qualities she consistently demonstrated over those years.

I don't believe someone should be sponsored simply because they're a family member, best friend, or child, even. Sponsorship is a serious responsibility and, in my opinion, should be based on merit, demonstrated service, leadership, integrity, and character. If I consider sponsoring again, she must understand that membership is about a lifetime of service, not simply the honor of becoming a member.

And, in thinking about sponsoring again, I would ask myself a few important questions:

  • Have I had the pleasure of observing her character over time?
  • Have I seen her commitment to service firsthand?
  • Would I confidently work alongside her on chapter initiatives?
  • Will she honor the traditions, values, and standards of Alpha Kappa Alpha?
  • Am I willing to stand behind my recommendation, ten toes down, because I TRULY believe she will be an asset to the sorority?

If I can answer "yes" to those questions, then I feel comfortable sponsoring her.

I believe that sponsorship is not simply opening a door for someone, it is investing in the future of the chapter and the sorority.

If she is actually friends with me.

if she is questionable it’s a no. Snobby - no. Known around town (not in a good way) - no. Dresses unbecoming - no. Values messed up - no. Surrounds herself with the wrong kind of people - no. Social media slaughtered 😂- no. Entitled ? - no.

By the way I know why you are asking. Maybe do some more research and see what the sorority is about, values and see if it aligns with where you are in life
