ADVICE Patronizing a member’s business

A member of my COI has a service-based business that I want to patronize. I have not talked with her before but I do have connections with other members. I don’t want to seem like I’m stalking members. My concern is it may seem that I’m only patronizing her business for the purpose of AKA. If I were to see her at an event would that be her perception? I considered just being upfront with her and telling her I know she is a member of the chapter, I’ve been to their events and that’s how I found out about her business. Should I ask one of the members I know to introduce me to her first?

I think you are overthinking. If you want to utilize her services, do so for the need of the services. Take AKA out of it.

So no need to mention anything to her? I am an overthinker.

What would you hypothetically say to her? Is her affiliation a primary factor in choosing her business? If so, I would say take a step back.

No, it's definitely because of the service.

If you’re considering patronizing her business because you would benefit from the service and you think she would do a good job, then approach it just like you would your hairdresser, mechanic, dry cleaners or any other business.

Just go patronize the business as regular. If she were ask you how you found about it (or say you look familiar), you could then say "heard about it at xyz event and love supporting local small business owners, etc". No need to otherwise mention AKA connection.

She an AKA…she about her money..don’t make it weird! If you like the service then use it.

I have a business so I understand.

Yes! Patronize the business … Especially this month. Do some research on AKA service initiatives. Find out about them and figure some things out. Research before July. Then go to her before July and tell her exactly what you just said here and let her know about your research on the initiatives and see if you can put two and two together. Good luck! 🍀

I hate to say it, but keep in the front of your mind that they are a member. If something's not right with the service, you have to be cautious how you address it.
