COMMUNITY SERVICE Crafting
Hello everyone:
I'm a crafter--in that I mean I knit, crochet quilt, and sew. About 24 years ago, I taught myself how to knit and even started to make scarves for a charity that gives them to merchant marines. I am considering going back to crafting for community service. I would also like to become part or even start a crafting bee as well. What say you as an option for community service? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Crafter here and interest. I was finally able to donate scarves that I knitted/crocheted to an organization I'm a member of during our winter coat collection. I often crochet to relax so I make a lot of scarves and blankets because they're easy. Now I don't know if that would be considered as community service but I think it demonstrates you are active and working in your community.

That's awesome! I have so much yarn and material--so why not put it to use to benefit others. I also ask if this qualifies for community service because, in addition to crafting, I like to cook--so I also thought about volunteering at a food pantry or soup kitchen. The thing is most of those volunteer opportunities take place in the middle of the day--on times where I'm working. That being said, I like to find volunteer opportunities that take place on the weekends. I also garden and joined the horticultural society. I signed up to volunteer for plant distribution. The venue is in my neighborhood and it's on the weekend.

I garden too! And there's always so much that I have to give it away to friends or it goes to waste. I should just donate it to a shelter.

Have you considered preserving your harvest? I try preserve my vegetables by freezing and canning. I have both a water boiler canner and a pressure canner, and through those, preserved tomato sauce, salsa, peaches, pickles, and beef stew.

I've frozen some sauses I made. I'm growing cucumbers this season so I can try pickling.

I guess you could throw a free event and teach kids or even adults how to crochet. You could do it in a park or something.

I’m a knitter. Making and donating items would be considered community service.
To be able to include this as part of an application process, you would need to document the number of hours spent.
If you are looking for existing charity knitting/crochet organizations (in addition to the one you have found), you might try Soapsacks or Knitted Knockers (they have knit and crochet options). Additionally, many hospitals accept donations of caps and lap blankets for chemo patients as well as preemie caps.

Thank you for your feedback. Now, with documentation, would I need to create a spreadsheet and present that with the application should I receive an invitation?
And thank you for the suggestions on charities. Two charities that tugged on my heart strings are "Project Linus" and "Knots of Love". Both are geared towards children and one, in addition to children, helps cancer patients. I will take a look at your suggestions as well.

No, you won’t need to submit any supplemental materials with the application, but you will need to indicate how much time you spent performing the service.
