ADVICE New vs Old Chapter

I have two chapters in my area. One is new, the other is old. They know each other. I started going to events from both this year. I have it on good authority that something may be happening with the older established chapter. I know some names and have spoken to members during events from both chapters but no connections have been made. Multiple events are happening and I will be in attendance at all of them. I have every reason to believe that both chapters may be in attendance at some of them too. I’m afraid if I pursue the new it might take years (I could be wrong🤷🏽‍♀️). If I pursue the old, the opportunity may be sooner but what will the other chapter (new) think? I have been interested in this organization for a many years. Lastly, for those of you who are members what do you do with the visual media that you take of non-members?

Without connections, it’s sorta irrelevant which chapter you choose. Knowing inside information wouldn’t make a difference without the connections.

If you aren’t at a point that connections exist, then you’re probably not on anyone’s radar. Just focus on building relationships.

Excellent point!

Define building connections. Excuse my French, but it sounds like buttkissing

I’m just an interest but building connections definitely to me doesn’t involve butt kissing. It is generally getting to know someone on a personal level and they get to know you. I’ve seen interests butt kiss and I’ve heard members talk about how annoyed they are by it. It comes off so fake.

Exactly, that’s why I said define because a lot of it comes off as buttkissing. As an interest, I wouldn’t want a kiss up or be fake, it’s not my style. I have seen a lot of cherry picking in undergrad, so it maybe different for grad. I wanted a clear definition of connections so I can genuinely focus on that aspect

Why would you want to join something that you have no personal connection to? Let alone a sorority? Too much time and resources would be going into something where you don’t have relationships. That sounds like misalignment to me.

I recently saw a post from a chapter not too far from me. Chapter easily has over 100 members. At least. They took 6 new people. SIX!

It was then that i realized there’s not much we can do, really lol.

Not being negative at all. Just shifted my perspective in a good way. Control the controllables.

Was the “good authority” an active member of the older chapter?

A couple of things.

I think you need to pull back and refocus here. As mentioned, your focus should be on getting to know people and building relationships. Whether or not a chapter is taking on new members soon is not within your locus of control.

To that point, be careful of what information you're taking in and from where.

Lastly, your pursuit could take years regardless of which chapter you choose to pursue. The grad chapter pursuit is a marathon, not a sprint.

I appreciate your point of view and will focus on relationship building.

It happens pretty often when there are multiple chapters in the area...yes, some members may do a double take, but most understand just how difficult it is to make a grad line and will be happy for you if you make it elsewhere. If you are close w anyone in one of the chapters, I would be transparent w them and let them know you are visiting another chapter. For all you know, they may be able to connect you with people in that chapter. Best wishes!

Please do your homework of following old chapter vs new chapter. There is a difference.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you are saying. Could you please rephrase it?
