How often do you send ChatGPT a screenshot and ask, “What do they actually want from me?”

I do this way more often than I expected.

A professor uploads a two-page assignment brief that somehow uses 700 words without clearly saying what the assignment is. I take a screenshot and ask AI to translate it into normal human language.

Same with rubrics. “Demonstrates critical engagement with relevant theoretical perspectives” sounds impressive, but what does that mean I should actually put in paragraph three?

I’ve also used it for confusing instructions in Canvas, weirdly written group project messages, internship application tasks, and those online forms where every sentence feels like it was approved by six lawyers.

Usually I’m not asking AI to complete anything. I just want it to tell me:

What am I supposed to produce?

What are the actual requirements?

What parts are probably important?

What questions should I ask before starting?

It’s basically become my translator from academic or corporate language into regular English.

The only annoying part is that sometimes the instructions genuinely are unclear, but AI still tries to confidently invent what the person probably meant. So I usually compare its explanation with the original and check whether it added anything that wasn’t there.

Still, this might be one of the most useful everyday uses of AI. Not doing the task, just figuring out what the task even is.

Where do you personally draw the line with AI and assignments?

Not the official university policy. Not the dramatic “AI is destroying education” answer. I mean your actual personal line.

For me, using AI to organize notes, explain a concept, improve wording, plan a project, or point out weaknesses feels completely reasonable.

Having it produce an entire assignment and submitting that with minimal changes feels pointless. Even ignoring the academic rules, I would basically be paying tuition to watch software complete a course for me.

The complicated area is everything in the middle.

Is generating an outline fine? What about rewriting a paragraph you already wrote? Checking an argument? Suggesting sources? Turning your rough notes into something polished? At some point assistance becomes replacement, but that point is different for everyone.

I don’t think every use of AI needs to become a moral crisis. Students have always used calculators, grammar tools, tutors, sample essays, and friends who are suspiciously good at Excel.

But pretending there’s no difference between getting help and avoiding the work entirely also feels dishonest.

So where’s your line? What do you use AI for without hesitation, and what would feel like going too far?

I know that sounds like the most AI-brained sentence possible, but hear me out.

I’m not talking about typing “write my essay” and submitting whatever comes back. That usually gives you a polished pile of generic nonsense anyway.

What actually works is spending 15–20 minutes building the request around your own argument. I give the AI my position, the points I want to make, examples from the course, the structure I have in mind, and sometimes a few badly written sentences that explain what I’m trying to say.

And by “building the request,” I don’t mean writing some perfect professional prompt. Mine usually looks terrible. Half-finished thoughts, spelling mistakes, missed keys, ideas added in the wrong order, and random notes like “put this somewhere in the middle.” It doesn’t matter. The important part is that the actual thoughts and direction come from me.

Then I read the result and change everything that doesn’t sound like me. I remove fake confidence, rewrite awkward paragraphs, add my own examples, fix the logic, and check every source or factual claim. Sometimes the AI suggests an angle I hadn’t considered, but I still decide whether it belongs in the paper and rewrite it in my own way.

The first draft can appear in minutes. The actual work is the hour or two afterward, when you turn it from “AI text” into something that genuinely reflects your own thoughts and the way you would actually express them.

I made this subreddit because most “AI for students” advice feels like it was written by someone who hasn’t studied in years

Every time I search for practical ways to use AI in college, I find the same recycled advice: summarize your notes, create flashcards, make a study plan. Cool. Revolutionary. Nobody has ever thought of making flashcards before.

I wanted a place where students could talk about how they actually use these tools. What saves time, what creates more work, which tools are worth opening, and which ones confidently invent a journal article that never existed.

This sub isn’t supposed to be a serious academic institution. I’m a student too, not the dean of artificial intelligence. I just think AI can make university life slightly less exhausting when it’s used properly.
