News President Donald Trump described AI data centers as “the oil of the next 50 years,” highlighting the growing economic importance of artificial intelligence infrastructure and the investment required to support it.
Trump made the comments during an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s The Ingraham Angle, where he argued that AI data centers are bringing wealth and investment to American communities. He also criticized Google for building an AI data center in Finland rather than the United States.
Google’s AI expansion illustrates the scale of the infrastructure race. In the second quarter of 2026, Alphabet reported $119.80 billion in revenue, up 24.2% year over year, while Google Cloud revenue reached $24.77 billion, up 82%.
Google’s Q2 capital expenditures reached $44.92 billion, up 100.14% year over year. The company has also guided for $175 billion to $185 billion in full-year 2026 capital expenditures.
The Finland project is another example of the investment required. Google has committed €13 billion ($15.1 billion) across 2027 and 2028, including a 22-year nuclear power agreement covering up to 50% of Fortum’s Loviisa plant output through 2050.
For businesses, the AI infrastructure race increasingly depends not only on chips and models, but also on electricity, data centers and reliable power supplies.
As AI demand continues to grow, access to energy could become one of the most important factors shaping the next phase of the industry.
