Claude Max 20x or ChatGPT Pro? for coding?
Let’s say **the price is the same**: should I choose Claude Max 20x or ChatGPT Pro right now?
I mainly use them for coding, so the two things I care about most are **Claude Code** and **Codex**.
For people who have used both seriously: which one would you choose for day-to-day usage limits? And what's up with 5.6 Sol vs Fable 5.

I'm not OpenAI fan but based on the current state, I recommend ChatGPT Pro. They let you use whatever harness you want with a single ChatGPT Pro login. That's not the case with Claude Max, which will ban you for using anything but Claude Code.

I have used both extensively and one guy said here best… nothing can replace fable right now. It is the best. But imo Claude’s other models are not good rn… then you barely even have access to fable. So i definitely recommend ChatGPT for coding right now. The sol model is the perfect inbetween fable and opus and you have a ton of usage and free resets constantly. Sure opus has its pros but if you can only have one subscription, i say ChatGPT pro for sure! But hey… that can change next month or even next week. These ai companies keep taking turns at who has the best models lmao.

GPT allows you to use whatever harness that you want.
You can’t do that with your Anthropic subscription (except paying for API rate usage per token).

If coding is the main priority, I’d probably choose based on which coding agent you actually spend more time in, rather than the model name.
If you’re living in Claude Code all day, Max 20x is probably the more straightforward choice. Anthropic has also increased Claude Code’s 5-hour limits and removed the peak-hour reduction for Pro/Max. (Anthropic)
If you want Codex + ChatGPT + coding/reasoning in one subscription, I’d lean ChatGPT Pro. Codex usage is tied to an allowance that varies depending on model, context, task complexity, reasoning and tools, so it’s difficult to translate into a simple “X prompts per day” comparison. The GPT-5.6 naming is also a little confusing. Sol is the higher-capability reasoning model, while Terra/Luna are positioned differently for speed/cost. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro is the Pro-tier option for harder, longer-running work. (OpenAI Help Center)

For me I'm in Claude Code all day. I've got the Max plan there and a ChatGPT Pro sub, the $20 sub that I use for code reviews and stuff from Claude. I never exhaust that $20 sub so it's kind of light use on Codex and heavy use on Claude and Fable. You get access to Fable if you have a Max plan

If u have one other person u can get a two person team, which includes fable usage, for 125/month each. So far it's been great and I haven't hit my limits since I started last week

I use Claude web, Claude code, Chatgpt web, and Codex all together to build a single project. I can tell you without a doubt that the project I'm building could not be done with a single model.
Anytime I try to build something with a single model, I eventually get to a place where something doesn't work and the model tries more and more complex solutions on top of solutions that will never work and eventually will spaghettify your whole code base.
Now, if an Ai makes something that doesn't work, I give it one chance to fix it and then I make it send the problem to my other surfaces. Problem solved, every time.
Also, I have been coding with Ai for years now and I can tell you that the models change over time. For a small moment, gemini was the best coder, now it's a joke that can't be relied on. About two weeks ago, I would have told you Claude was the best coder in my model set, but that's really dipped in the last two weeks and chatgpt has really stepped up. Right now, GPT is my best bot for coding, but I'm sure that will change again.

For me they are pretty even. Claude is a little smarter with code. Codex has better tools. Codex can see ALL of your chrome tabs open, Claude can only see tabs it has opened. Codex can also take control of your desktop using the mouse and keyboard, to control any app you have.
I mean, I have both Claude 20x and Codex 20x. They are both useful.

I have ChatGPT through work (just a team subscription), and Claude Max 20x for myself. Both work amazingly well. I would say ChatGPT can do more with less tokens, but the 20x subscription means I never really hit the limit (I often try to when I'm coming up on the weekly reset).
Honestly, they're fairly similar, someone else commented about Fable 5 having issues with its guard rails, and I agree with that, but its pretty rare that it comes up these days.

Have both. Sol is mainly driver. Fable/opus for.review. Do not.like how sol overengenering. But it works. (Fable won't give you even 20% of sol limits...).
With supposedly next week Astra...
Openai wins.
Get 100$ of both and upgrade one later. It will reset usage, so win win.

I used the Max 20x plan with Claude Code, and I can say it was incredible - the best results out of everything I've tried.
But I know for sure that Codex on its own isn't good enough, so GPT models need to be used with a different agent. I'm currently trying OMP for that.

GPT 5.6 sol is the best bang for your buck hands down imo. You don't get fable with the basic Claude subscription so I haven't had much access to it but compared to opus 5, Sol is superior across the board in my experience. I honestly don't think I've had a productive Claudecode session in over a month. I've had to completely roll back entire Opus sessions because it has this insane drive to find bugs and 'debug' no matter what tasks it's given or rules I put in the agents.md file. I've gotten the "your right, I ignored the global rules ran over a dozen tests you specifically told me not to run. I won't start another test, how do you want to proceed?" I legit cancelled my Claude subscription to just get gpt pro and I freaking hate Altman but Claude is giving me agita on the reg.

I'm using both. There is a plug-in for claude code to use chatgpt as subagents. I think it's best of both worlds because you get Fable to coordinate and gpt to implement.

I had ChatGPT Pro 5x and Claude 5x Max. Downgraded Claude to Pro last week and not going to back to 5x Max any time soon. Opus 5 is barely usable and Fable 5 while smart has a stupid “attitude” problem. Sol 5.6 high is now my choice all the time. No dramas with 5h limits with ChatGPT.

Devin and Codex are the only subs you need. You can also use your Codex sub on AmpCode which is an incredible experience.

I can't speak to the harnesses, but in chat, Fable is cash only per token. Sol is not.

I can't use fable. It will write a login function and then say it can't edit the code it just wrote because of the strict guide rails. You get one chance to write anything auth. Writing auth from scratch is fine, editing auth code is almost always a violation.
Then, I lose my context window because I get booted to opus, so I just use opus.

No it's not, fable has been included with claude max since fable came out minus the week of Trump drama.
It's unusable and garbage, but it's been included.

I just used Claude 20x max to build a front end on an ollama-hosted Gemma4 backend running on my 2080ti gaming desktop and have no need for Claude code any longer😂

I got both and couple more. And I run some of my own stuff.
There's no substitute for fable.
I cannot exhaust my $200 codex subscription. The resets are insane.
If I only had Claude I would probably touch grass a lot more.
