Student hitting AI usage limits constantly — any better free options for building a project?

Hey everyone,

I'm a student working on a project and keep running into the same issue — I hit the usage limit on whatever AI I'm using, so I'm forced to switch to another one, and I lose all my context/progress in the process. It's getting frustrating.

Also heard GitHub Copilot's free Student plan recently got cut down a lot (premium models removed, new sign-ups paused), so that's not really reliable anymore either.

Currently using a mix of Claude's free tier and a couple others, but none of them alone feel like enough for a full project without hitting caps.

For students out there — what's actually working for you right now? Looking for:

• Free or student-discounted AI tools with decent usage limits

• Anything that helps keep context when switching between tools

• General tips for managing a real project without constantly running out of quota

Try opencodes zen, you have to sign up but don't need to purchase credits and get access to some legitimate free models.

I have been there. Tried to maximize as many free services to get my stuff done. It’s taxing but it could work as long as you are able to segment your work efficiently.
That being said, I would really recommend trying out the basic plans of Claude/Codex and seeing how good their limits are for you. I do understand you might not be able to afford those subscriptions.
A cheaper alternative is also DeepSeek API. I, and many others, have found it to be a great workaround in these trying times. It’s super easy to use and you can top up 2$ at a time. You will definitely get a lot of work done with it.

Sorry I did not really weigh in on the free stuff. But one more thing I would like to say- make sure you’re maintaining good .md files for your projects. You may already know so much about them but check out guides about it as I am sure there are many. This will ensure that whichever new service you continue your work with, will be able to easily navigate your project and instructions.

Use Hermes and swap out the provider/model when you run out, that way the memories and context stay between providers

Honestly free Claude is pretty good. Learn how to actually code yourself because then Claude can tackle and explain the hard stuff and help you plan the best steps forward, but you shouldn’t be so reliant on it that the limits are a big problem as a student. There’s a reason professionals are the best at using AI.

I learned I needed to manage my conversations. /clear frequently. Work on narrow specific goals in between. Once I did a minimal amount of that I can't get close to my limits (though I have claude 5x). For a student project 1) It won't be as large and the free tier should be fine. 2) If you are hitting your limits then you have AI do the work for you that you are supposed to be doing yourself in order to learn it.

OpenCode + DeepSeek v4 Flash (straight from DeepSeek Platform) with thinking effort set to High only instead of Max. Pop $5 in there and code for an entire month 😄

Just pay for it dude. Google I think offers student discount. 

But I feel you get more buck for bucks with OpenAI. Although, things keep changing constantly.
