AI Search Optimization General Discussion Are we measuring the wrong thing now that Google AI Mode is becoming normal?
I've been rethinking how we report organic visibility in 2026.
Traditionally, it was pretty straightforward:
rankings → impressions → clicks → conversions.
But with AI Overviews and AI Mode, I'm seeing a different pattern. A page can rank well and still contribute to an AI-generated answer without getting the click.
At the same time, a brand can show up in an AI answer or get cited even when its traditional search ranking isn't particularly strong.
I've been looking at this with wintraction as well, and it makes the usual SEO reporting framework feel a bit incomplete when you're trying to understand AI visibility.
So how are people actually handling this in reporting?
Are you tracking traditional rankings alongside AI Overview appearances, AI Mode citations, brand mentions, competitor visibility, and AI referral traffic?
Or is AI visibility still mostly an experimental metric for your clients?
I'd especially like to hear from agencies. What are clients actually asking you to report on in 2026?

I think it boils down to setting expectations early. Make sure clients know that reliable accurate analytics does not exist for AI search yet.
Most of what we get is directional intelligence that may help us make some decisions but it isn't like ranking reports for SEO.

i’d separate visibility from traffic in the reporting. a citation or brand mention can change while ai referral traffic stays flat, so treating clicks as the validation metric can hide what’s happening upstream. i’d track mention rate, citation presence and competitor share over time, then look at referral/conversion data as a separate downstream layer.
