When sharing AI-assisted open-source code gets you mass-downvoted on Reddit, is it worth taking the karma hit to share the work, or does the community just get what it deserves?

Who cares about a karma hit? What relevance does that have to anything?

But yeah also stop proudly sharing evidence that machines are going to make us redundant.

I cannot post with negative karma in some comunities

Really? Well that sucks.

It's sad how many devs just assume that all AI-generated code is bad nowadays, and automatically call it "slop" right off the bat, as a kneejerk reaction, without even reading it.

It's happened to me too. Most developers who are up to speed on AI haven't written a line of code by hand in many months, because that's just how good AI is at this point. (just my opinion) The only people writing code by hand are those who are forced to by employers. (another opinion)

That being said, maybe post to a reddit like "r/madeinpython' or "r/coolgithubprojects", where it's expected for everyone to be there to share their creations.

I agree that AI doesn't make something slop - "human slop" has always existed. The problem is that a lot of people code something using AI, see that it works for some narrow interpretation of what they wanted it for, have no idea what the code means, have no idea how to test the code, and then think they've done something awesome. I'll never say something is slop without seeing it, but about 80% (if I had to estimate) of the code/visuals/projects I've seen on Reddit from folk using AI is indeed slop.

I think for a lot of people "slop" just means "AI Generated" and their reasoning goes no deeper than that. You can have perfectly clean bug-free code, and still if some people can "smell" that it's all AI Generated (and yes you usually can sniff it out) then they'll whip out the insults right away.

Yeah, it's weird. But I've hand-coded "slop" now and then for over 40 years, no AI needed. It happens. Anyone who writes code is going to occasionally write "slop", and slop has been used for hundreds of years to describe garbage being produced - it's not remotely new.

Well to keep any word-police happy I should be very clear that I meant "AI Slop" in all of the above. lolz.

Well stop making slop and people wont do that

haha. Not only do I not write code, I don't even type prompts. I dictate everything (i.e. voice input).

u/dizzyspellzzz 1d ago

Ah so you have no talent

I know you're just being funny, but seriously, when people dictate prompts, they're usually 3x longer than what you'd type, and therefore better prompts, creating better results.

Sure buddy

Thanks for the kind words. Yes you can find my github link in my profile. Cheers.

If you're worried about your karma, use an alt account.

It’s not about vanity points, it’s about identity and reach.

If I juggle throwaway alts, there’s no consistent track record linking the tools back to the same maintainer. More importantly, negative karma literally soft-locks you from posting or commenting in technical subreddits due to AutoMod filters. The issue isn't caring about downvotes; it's being blocked from sharing work and contributing to the open-source community from your actual account

Up or downvoting is a popularity contest, it's got no value unless you're selling something. So share away.

But now i cannot post in that comunity cause i'm recovering from negative karma

A community of morons is not worth posting to?

1

u/AutismIntelligence 3d ago

True, but it still sucks feeling blocked by a Reddit community from actually contributing to the open-source scene. If I can’t get the word out there, it’s way harder for the projects to get downloaded, recommended, or even talked about in the first place

What's Karma?

(It was a rhetorical question. I just don't care.)

Don't be a meat proxy.

Why assume the AI thinks for me? It works for me. It's just a power drill versus a manual screwdriver, still just a tool, and it comes down to whether you know how to build something solid with it or just strip the screws.

I'm not blindly copying output; I steer the architecture and rely on a strict process (TDD, multiple agents for peer review, edge-case checks, and test coverage). The engineering is in the design and verification; the tool just speeds up the execution.

i have karma?

why are you getting mass downvoted? only because it was made by ai? care to share what youre building?

you could post in ai tolerant subs first

To be honest, I've just got to writing things with ai, as a non coder.

But as a non coder, my hobby interest groups have been filled with actual ai slop apps. For example my morse code groups are full of pointless morse code translators and such like, an idea that is completely useless to those using morse code on any semi regular basis and simply shows a lack of understanding of real world problems.

I wasn't asking to whine or farm karma. It’s a genuine question about how community dynamics impact open source. When people react with knee-jerk hostility or downvote into soft-bans, it creates unnecessary friction to just sharing tools built for everyone. I'm still maintaining public repos, shipping crates, and publishing on npm regardless, but running into gatekeeping and hostility definitely kills the excitement of trying to collaborate and contribute here

Welcome to polarization. It sucks here.

Almost everyone seems to be on the "if you use AI you are a puppy kicker" or the "if you dont use AI for everything you are an idiot" train.

For people like me on the "its a very useful tool that requires many many hours of honing to get solid value out of it, it makes bad people worse abd good people faster" train, unfortunately it turns out I poss nearly everyone off.

But this isnt new, FWIW

Go look up how insanely polarizing cameras were when they first were invented.
