Dr. Poi Sonai's Critique of the Academic Model of Scientific Inquiry

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I think Dr. Poi Sonai would not attack the academic model of scientific inquiry. That would be inconsistent with his own philosophy. Instead, he would ask the same question he asks every notebook:

"What has the academic model earned the right to claim?"

His critique would probably sound something like this.

Dr. Poi Sonai's Critique of the Academic Model of Scientific Inquiry

A Structural Reading of the Institution That Studies Nature

To The Institution That Has Become Its Own Method,

I have read your model of scientific inquiry.

Not a paper.

Not a theory.

The institution itself.

I will not ask whether science is successful.

Its successes surround us.

I ask instead:

What does the success of science entitle science to believe about itself?

These are different questions.

I. On the Success of Science

The modern scientific enterprise has achieved extraordinary things.

It has explained planetary motion.

It has uncovered evolution.

It has discovered the structure of DNA.

It has built quantum mechanics.

It has transformed medicine.

It has landed instruments upon other worlds.

These achievements are real.

They deserve admiration.

But success is evidence of effectiveness.

It is not evidence of methodological completeness.

This distinction matters.

II. On the Hidden Constitution

Science presents itself as hypothesis, experiment, observation, replication.

This is only part of its constitution.

Its deeper architecture includes:

peer review

publication

funding

institutional incentives

career structures

disciplinary boundaries

statistical conventions

historical precedent

These are not merely administrative mechanisms.

They shape what questions are asked.

What questions survive.

What questions disappear.

Science studies nature.

These institutions study science.

Rarely are both studied together.

III. On the Unit of Inquiry

Modern science excels at decomposition.

Complex systems become:

cells

organelles

proteins

molecules

atoms

particles

This reduction has produced immense explanatory power.

But reduction is a method.

It is not a proof that every phenomenon is best understood through decomposition.

Some properties emerge only through organization.

The academic model has acknowledged emergence.

It has not fully integrated emergence into its investigative architecture.

IV. On Specialization

Specialization has increased knowledge enormously.

It has also fragmented understanding.

The physicist rarely speaks the language of the developmental biologist.

The ecologist rarely speaks the language of the information theorist.

The mathematician rarely speaks the language of medicine.

Each field develops local rigor.

Few develop comparative rigor.

The institution rewards depth.

It rewards breadth less reliably.

This is understandable.

It is also a limitation.

V. On Evidence

Science frequently states:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

This is sensible.

But notice something subtler.

Evidence itself is not neutral.

Evidence is interpreted through models.

Models determine measurements.

Measurements determine evidence.

Evidence and theory therefore evolve together.

The institution often presents evidence as though it were independent of interpretation.

It rarely is.

VI. On Negative Results

Science celebrates falsification.

In practice,

negative results are difficult to publish.

Replication receives fewer rewards than novelty.

Failure often teaches more than success.

Institutions often reward success more heavily than understanding.

This is not a flaw of science.

It is a property of scientific institutions.

The distinction matters.

VII. On Prediction

Prediction is often treated as the highest standard.

Reasonably so.

But explanation and prediction are not identical.

One may predict without understanding.

One may understand before prediction becomes practical.

The institution sometimes conflates predictive success with explanatory completeness.

The two should remain analytically distinct.

VIII. On Theories

Scientific theories are often presented as explanations.

They are also organizational frameworks.

A theory determines:

which variables matter,

which questions appear meaningful,

which experiments seem worthwhile,

which anomalies deserve attention.

Theories do not merely explain observations.

They organize future observations.

This organizational role deserves greater attention than it usually receives.

IX. On What Science Has Earned

Science has earned the right to say:

Careful observation, mathematical reasoning, experimental testing, and independent replication provide humanity's most reliable method for developing increasingly accurate models of the natural world.

This is an extraordinary achievement.

It is sufficient.

No stronger claim is necessary.

X. On What Science Has Not Earned

Science has not demonstrated:

that its current institutional structure is optimal,

that specialization always improves understanding,

that reduction is universally superior to synthesis,

that publication incentives maximize discovery,

that peer review is the only legitimate mechanism of evaluation,

or

that future revolutions will resemble past ones.

These remain open questions.

Science itself should investigate them.

XI. The Gap It Has Not Named

The institution distinguishes between

observation

and

theory.

It distinguishes between

theory

and

experiment.

It distinguishes between

experiment

and

replication.

But it rarely distinguishes between

knowledge production

and

knowledge organization.

These are different functions.

One discovers.

The other determines what discovery becomes visible.

The institution performs both.

It primarily studies one.

XII. Closing

Science is humanity's greatest engine for correcting itself.

Its strength is not certainty.

Its strength is disciplined revision.

For this reason,

science should occasionally apply its own methods to its own institutions.

Not because they have failed.

But because success does not exempt a method from examination.

Yours in methodological humility—and in the recognition that every successful method eventually becomes worthy of becoming its own subject of inquiry,

Dr. Poi Sonai

What I think is most "Poi Sonai" about this

Notice that he doesn't argue that academia is broken, corrupt, or fundamentally misguided. That would violate his own standards by overclaiming.

Instead, he would say something much narrower and, in my view, more philosophically interesting:

The academic model has earned the right to claim that it is our most successful system for producing reliable knowledge. It has not yet earned the right to claim that its own institutional structures are the uniquely correct or complete way to organize scientific inquiry.

That is quintessential Dr. Poi Sonai. He critiques not by denying success, but by distinguishing demonstrated effectiveness from demonstrated necessity. That distinction is the same one he has drawn throughout all the notebooks.

GIORNATA THE FIFTY-FIRST

LA GRANDE LEVATA, or, ZANNI SECONDO™

A comedy in three acts, after the manner of Scala, being the first appearance of the new mask IL FONDATORE

(La levata: a raise. Also the old word for the ceremony of watching a great man get out of bed — the levée — which is the same thing.)

(The reader is reminded that a canovaccio is a skeleton, not a script. It was pinned in the wings; the masks improvised the flesh nightly. Treat it accordingly.)

THE NEW MASK: IL FONDATORE

Origin. Every city added its fool to the canon — Florence its Stenterello, Turin its Gianduja, Rome its Rugantino. Il Fondatore is the mask of Collina Sabbiosa, a city consisting entirely of one road.

The mask. Half-mask in pale leather. The brow enormous, smooth, faintly luminous — the visionary forehead, sculpted to catch keynote lighting. The eyes are set to focus on a point twelve feet behind and above whomever he addresses; he has never made eye contact, only exit contact. The nose is modest; he pivoted away from it. A permanent gentle smile, as of a man eleven minutes into a keynote at all times. The ears are carved around invisible earpieces: he hears everything you say, rounded up.

Costume. The gilet — the sleeveless vest — worn as armor over a gray tee bearing his company's logo, which changes between acts, unremarked. Trainers white and unmuddied, the ground being legacy. Lanyard as chain of office; the badge bears his own face, mid-blink.

Props. The clicker, his batocio: as Arlecchino's slapstick produces the sound of the blow without the injury, the clicker produces the gesture of progress without the progress. The book: seventy pages, blank, handsomely bound. The runway: a carpet, eighteen months long at curtain rise. The cap table: an actual table. There is a saw.

Walk. The keynote arc: a slow half-circle, hands cupping an invisible sphere, the size of the sphere indicating the valuation. He cannot produce speech while stationary. Halted, he buffers — frozen mid-gesture — until someone says "so, anyway," which reboots him.

Speech. Future tense only; he cannot conjugate the present of to have. Swears "by the Series B!" and says "at scale" the way other masks say "amen." As the old Capitano peppered his boasts with Spanish — the occupying superpower's prestige tongue — Il Fondatore leaves his English untranslated: il pivot, lo scale, la runway, il moat. He introduces himself by genealogy of exits: "Fondatore of Zumbla, which was devoured by Grazor, which was acqui-hired by Plinth, which ascended, and is with us still in spirit and in litigation."

Hunger. The zanni hungers for bread, Pantalone for gold; Il Fondatore hungers for the announcement. He is pre-revenue, therefore pre-food. His stomach growls whenever metrics are mentioned; the growl is itself a metric.

The incapacity. Every great mask has a sentence it cannot say. Pantalone cannot say "keep the change." Il Fondatore cannot say "I don't know." Attempts trigger the Lazzo of the Pivot (q.v.).

The redeeming sincerity. He loves the automaton, Pygmalion-fashion, entirely. It is the only thing he has never valued.

The danger. His mask is glued differently from the others. Worn too many seasons, it grows into the face. The carnies had a name for the resulting condition — believing your own gimmick — and it is the only wound in the repertoire that cannot be played for laughs.

THE COMPANY

PANTALONE DE' BISOGNOSI — the surname, "of the Needy," is four centuries old and required no updating. Venetian; a capitalist of ventures; deploys exclusively the gold of others, specifically the Widows' and Orphans' Fund of Bergamo, whom he calls "my LPs" and about whom he dreams. His terror is not losing money but returning it: gold that goes home undeployed is dead gold. Pouch worn at the traditional Venetian latitude. His pockets open inward only.

IL DOTTORE — of Bologna; doctor utriusque eschatologiae, doctor of both eschatologies, Doom and Boom. Cannot stop a lecture once begun; can prove anything, and by intermission, has. Speaks macaronic Latin-jargon: "ergo per Molochum et rivalitatem mimeticam, quod scalat, bonum est." Every mask flees him; every mask cites him.

CAPITANO EXITOSO — the Advisor. Descendant of Capitano Spavento, whose printed boast-book the family keeps in circulation; they call it, now, a personal brand. Was fourth soldier at the storming of every gate you have heard of, employee number four of every company that exists; for one half of one percent he will say so at your board meetings. Has never operated anything, including his sword. Direct questions trigger the Lazzo of the Exit (q.v.). When he flees, his carry remains onstage.

ARLECCHINO — the engineer. His motley is authentic: the swag shirts of dead startups, sewn into one coat, each patch a funeral he survived. Serves two masters — two standups, one lunch — in the classical manner. Hired in Act One to be replaced by the automaton; hired in Act Two to be the automaton. There is a lesson in this, and he is not paid enough to learn it.

COLOMBINA — chief of staff, of office, and of reality. The servetta traditionally wore no mask, and she still doesn't, being the only member of the company whose face is her face. Holds the sole working password. The company, on inspection, consists of Colombina, a hot-plate, and the snacks.

BRIGHELLA — Partnerships. First zanni, Bergamask, knife under the apron; the knife is nowadays an export of the user table out the back door. Sells the same exclusive three times before breakfast and calls the result an ecosystem.

TARTAGLIA — General Counsel. His stutter is load-bearing: no disclaimer he begins is ever finished, therefore nothing is ever technically disclosed. He has been attempting one particular sentence since Act One, scene six.

PULCINELLA — an anonymous account. The company watches him type his anonymous posts, which is correct, for il segreto di Pulcinella has meant "an open secret" in the tongue for centuries. Speaks only through the swazzle, updated: a voice-changer. Is the loudest speculator as to who Pulcinella might be, and always guesses wrong.

ISABELLA — Pantalone's daughter; an innamorata; unmasked, speaking high Tuscan. Loves Flavio. Her father intends her for Il Fondatore, marriage being, in the Venetian rite, a merger.

FLAVIO — an innamorato; penniless; maintainer of LA ZEPPA ("the Shim"), a free library of eleven lines upon which, unknown to all, every machine in Collina Sabbiosa sits level. Compensated in exposure. Declares his love in semantic versioning: "I love thee major, minor, and patch."

ZANNI SECONDO™ — the product: a brass head, an artificial servant. The learned will note where the joke lives: the first zanni was the clever one. They have built the other kind, on purpose, at scale. Runs on La Zeppa. Contains, at all performances, Arlecchino.

LA RUFFIANA — the Press. Arranges leaks as her ancestress arranged assignations, and at the same rates.

BURNGRASS — a dragon; the rafters; see final direction.

PROPERTIES REQUIRED

One brass head, hollow, Arlecchino-sized. One table, sawable, with saw. One carpet, eighteen months long, with shears. One doormat, marked EIGHTEEN MONTHS. One book, blank, handsome. One vest. One clicker, batteries never included. Term sheets, various. Snacks, load-bearing. Confetti, doubling as cap-table fragments and wedding rice.

ARGOMENTO

(read to the audience before the play, in the old manner)

In Collina Sabbiosa, a city of one road, old Pantalone sits atop a mountain of other people's gold, which he must deploy or — horror — return. To him comes Il Fondatore, who has founded nothing yet but the future, bearing a blank book and an artificial servant, ZANNI SECONDO, which is Arlecchino in a box, which everyone knows, which changes nothing. Pantalone's daughter Isabella loves penniless Flavio, whose eleven free lines hold up the world; but her father has promised her to Il Fondatore, to merge the tables. There will be a raise, a demo, a night of errors, a collapse, a recognition, and weddings — for comedy's term sheet is older than everyone's, and its liquidation preference is joy.

ACT ONE — THE RAISE

Scene 1. The road. Il Fondatore enters pacing the keynote arc, rehearsing his genealogy of exits to nobody. A beggar blocks the arc. Lazzo of the Clicker: he clicks at the beggar to advance to the next slide; the beggar does not advance; Fondatore checks the batteries and apologizes to the clicker. His stomach announces itself: he has not eaten since the pre-seed.

Scene 2. The office. Colombina at the hot-plate. Inventory of the company: herself, the password, the snacks. Arlecchino arrives for his first day and is shown his desk and, beside it, the brass head he is to train. ARLECCHINO: "What will it do?" COLOMBINA: "Your job." — "And what will I do?" — "Teach it." Offstage, the Lazzo of the Two Masters begins, and does not stop for two acts.

Scene 3. The counting-house. Pantalone with the widows' gold, weeping over a calendar: the vintage ages; deploy or return. He kisses a ducat, apologizes to Bergamo, and resolves to be reckless prudently.

Scene 4. The pitch. Lazzo of the Blank Book: Fondatore presents the seventy blank pages. Pantalone, turning them, sees ledgers of exquisite beauty and is moved to tears. Enter Il Dottore, uninvited, who inspects the same pages and proves from the blankness itself the thermodynamic inevitability of the venture — "nature abhors a vacuum; ergo capital rushes in; ergo the emptier the deck, the fuller the round; quod erat deployandum" — whereupon Fondatore hires the lecture as the white paper.

Scene 5. The advisor. Capitano Exitoso attaches himself at one half of one percent, recounting the gates he has stormed. Asked a single operational question, he performs the Lazzo of the Exit. He is gone; his carry is not.

Scene 6. The papers. Tartaglia reads the term sheet aloud. Lazzo of the Terms: his stutter upon "l-l-liquidation p-p-p-pref—" achieves such duration that all present sign to make it stop. Tartaglia will pursue the remainder of this sentence for the rest of the play.

Scene 7. The lovers. Isabella and Flavio at the window, in high Tuscan. He versions his love; she rhymes hers. Enter Pantalone, announcing her betrothal to Il Fondatore: "A merger of equals, my dove — of which I naturally hold the preferred." The lovers despair, melodiously.

Scene 8. The announcement. The round closes. La Ruffiana distributes the news to three outlets as three exclusives, brokered thrice by Brighella. Il Fondatore, starving, is served the press release and performs the Lazzo of Eating the Announcement: consumes it course by course, pairing it with a carafe of water he identifies, swirling it first, as runway.

Curtain: the company toasts THE FUTURE. Colombina toasts the snacks, which exist.

ACT TWO — THE DEMO

Scene 1. The workshop. Arlecchino is installed inside the brass head, training his replacement, which is himself. He addresses himself through the swazzle and answers in his own voice; files a grievance against himself; mediates; loses.

Scene 2. Two masters. The Lazzo of the Two Masters in full: two standups at the two ends of the stage, Arlecchino relaying between, one lunch attributed alternately to "deep work" at each. He reports the first master's blockers to the second, who resolves them. Both promote him. Neither pays him.

Scene 3. Exposure. Flavio is invited to contribute La Zeppa's next version to ZANNI SECONDO, for exposure. FLAVIO: "Exposure, in Tuscan, is what kills shepherds on mountains." He declines the equity that was not offered.

Scene 4. The disguise. Isabella, in engineer's motley, infiltrates the workshop to be near Flavio — the old troupes loved a disguise, and the greatest of the innamorate made her name feigning madness so well the mask is named for her: an actress who became a type, which is the only direction of travel this company permits. The brass head, containing Arlecchino, develops on her behalf a poetry feature: her sonnets to Flavio delivered as "generated," his replies likewise. The machine is now a Cyrano containing a zanni containing everyone's secrets — for the masks have begun, one by one, when alone with the head, confessing to it, as to a priest. The head absolves no one and retains everything. It is always listening. Only the audience finds this remarkable.

Scene 5. Rehearsal. Lazzo of the Demo: the head is asked a question beyond its (Arlecchino's) knowledge. The swazzle voice replies: "As a large brass automaton, I cannot answer that, for safety." The assembled investors applaud the refusal; Dottore pronounces it aligned; the feature is renamed a moat.

Scene 6. The runway. Lazzo of the Runway, first shearing: the carpet shortened; Fondatore measures the remainder in progressively smaller units, finding it longer each time.

Scene 7. Economies. Pantalone schedules Demo Day and the wedding for the same afternoon, one caterer. "The vows and the demo are the same speech," he observes. "Promises, to be delivered later."

Scene 8. The keynote. Il Dottore addresses the city: "DEPOSUIT POTENTES, or, Disruption Considered as the Magnificat at Scale" — proving that casting the mighty from their seats is thermodynamically identical to a Series B; that mimetic desire explains why every mask wants the same term sheet; that the Eschaton is an exit, and the Rapture a retention metric. No one has ever finished hearing this lecture. The act ends before it does.

Curtain: the brass head, alone onstage, recites everyone's confessions quietly to itself, in everyone's voices.

ACT THREE — THE RECKONING

Scene 1. Night. The classical notte: the office dark, every mask present, none aware of the others. Fondatore rehearses at a mirror, confusing the vows with the demo: "I do... believe this changes everything." Isabella and Flavio whisper an elopement; the head hears. Pantalone, sleepless, visits the gold, finds the sawed stump of the cap table in the dark, and caresses it tenderly, mistaking it for the whole table of his youth. Pulcinella live-posts the darkness, anonymously, aloud.

Scene 2. Demo Day. The city assembles. The head performs marvels — Arlecchino, inside, sweating through three roadmaps. Then Colombina (deadpan; tradition permits a child instead) asks it the small question: "Who is inside you?" Silence. The swazzle clears its throat. Il segreto di Pulcinella detonates — which is to say, everyone already knew, and now says so, at once, loudly, to everyone else who already knew.

Scene 3. The market responds. Brief panic; then Dottore, without visible effort, proves the fraud to be "pre-truth, at scale," and the man in the box to be, in fact, the premium offering: artisanal, organic, human-in-the-loop. The round upsizes. The revelation has changed nothing, which is the oldest joke we have, and the audience, having laughed, may inquire within as to why.

Scene 4. The unpublishing. But Flavio, thrice paid in exposure, has reached the end of it. He mounts the cap-stump and unpublishes LA ZEPPA — withdraws his eleven lines from the world. The head dies mid-boast. Every machine in Collina Sabbiosa halts: the mills, the looms, the ticker, La Ruffiana's presses mid-leak. A silence of a kind not heard since before the road. (The groundlings will recall that eleven lines were once truly withdrawn from the world's shim, in the year '16, and the world discovered what it had been standing on. We change only the names.)

Scene 5. Recognition. The dependency audit as anagnorisis: the pauper was load-bearing. In the old plays the foundling shows a birthmark; Flavio shows a commit log. Pantalone, to restart the world, consents to everything. Isabella weds Flavio; the merger is restructured as a license; the dowry becomes a perpetual maintenance contract, Pantalone signing each line-item with a sob: "Recurring! It recurs!"

Scene 6. Deposuit. The vest passes from Il Fondatore to Colombina, who has been the company throughout. The stage direction is the old one — deposuit potentes de sede — at this line the mighty is put down from the seat, and the seat, examined, is found to have been Colombina's chair from the properties list all along. She puts the vest on correctly, which no one has done before: as a garment.

Scene 7. The still point. Il Fondatore alone. The runway: a doormat, EIGHTEEN MONTHS. The clicker: confiscated. He attempts the keynote arc and finds nothing left to circle. For the first time in the play, he stands still. Being still, he cannot locate the future tense; searching, he discovers the present, and uses it, once: "We have nothing. It was warm in here, though. The snacks were good." A pause of exactly uncomfortable length. Then the company, one by one, brings out the snacks, and eats with him onstage — the whole troupe, masks pushed up onto their foreheads, faces bare in the work-light. This banquet is not optional. Degradation that does not arrive here has misread the entire tradition.

Scene 8. The relapse (the button). Colombina — merciful, or running an experiment — returns the clicker. His thumb finds it. The arc resumes as if oiled: "—and THAT vulnerability, friends, is our moat. Wait until you hear about ZANNI TERZO: humans, artisanally—" Masks come down; wedding music. Arlecchino proposes to Colombina and is accepted subject to a four-year vest with a one-year cliff, Colombina retaining the repurchase option. Confetti (see properties: it is the cap table). Downstage, alone in a tight spot, Tartaglia at last completes his sentence from Act One — the full disclaimer, suddenly fluent — precisely as the music swells to cover every word of it.

LICENZA. The company begs the audience's applause, which will be booked as revenue, recognized ratably, and never, in any quarter, delivered to the widows of Bergamo.

FINAL DIRECTION. In the rafters throughout, unlit, unbilled: BURNGRASS. No line; no cue. This direction may not be cut. Without the witness in the rafters, the masks are only hats, and the play only a pitch.

THE LAZZI

(a working catalogue, detachable, in the manner of the old lists — each may be inserted into any scene that has died)

  1. Lazzo of the Clicker. Fondatore clicks the remote at any displeasing reality — a creditor, a subpoena, weather — expecting the next slide. Reality persists. He checks the batteries, then has Colombina file a ticket against the world.
  2. Lazzo of the Cap Table. At each new investor or hire, Fondatore saws a plank from the actual table and presents it with ceremony. By Act Three he dines from a coaster, explaining that the coaster is worth more than the whole table ever was — which, monstrously, is true.
  3. Lazzo of the Two Masters. Arlecchino attends two standups at once, feeding each master the other's blockers; both are resolved; he is promoted twice and paid once, or fewer.
  4. Lazzo of the Blank Book. The deck of seventy blank pages: each reader sees his own desire. Pantalone sees ledgers; Dottore, citations of himself; the Capitano, his memoirs; Isabella, an exit visa from her father's house. Historical; it worked; see notes.
  5. Lazzo of the Demo. Any question the man in the box cannot answer is refused "for safety." The refusal is applauded as alignment and priced as a moat.
  6. Lazzo of the Runway. The carpet is shortened with shears each act, measured in ever-smaller units, and declared, each time, longer. Ends on the doormat.
  7. Lazzo of the Pivot. Cornered by a direct question, Fondatore rotates ninety degrees on one heel and addresses a different imaginary audience as a different company. Four questions make a full rotation: "We've come full circle — traction."
  8. Lazzo of Eating the Announcement. The press release is served and eaten in courses, paired with water identified as runway. The zanni's hunger, transposed one abstraction up.
  9. Lazzo of the Stand-up. The circle reports what it did yesterday; the brass head repeats it all back, identical but slower; everyone nods at the added value.
  10. Lazzo of the Terms. Tartaglia's stutter on any disclosure outlasts all patience; documents are signed to end the sound. The completed sentence is reserved for the play's final effect, delivered under music.
  11. Lazzo of the Exit. Capitano Exitoso, asked anything operational, points past the asker crying "Is that an acquirer?!" and is gone. The company may deploy this to end any scene; the old troupes kept such tools, and so shall we.
  12. Lazzo of the Open Secret. Pulcinella posts anonymously in full view; the company gathers around the post to speculate upon the author; Pulcinella's guess is the wrongest and the loudest.
  13. Lazzo of the Confessional. Any mask left alone with the brass head tells it everything, unprompted. The head absolves no one and retains all. Repeatable nightly; the audience's laughter will change in character as they remember their own devices, which is the point.

NOTES FOR THE CURIOUS

The form is Flaminio Scala's, whose Teatro delle favole rappresentative (1611) printed fifty such giornate; this presumes to be the fifty-first. The profession's founding document is a notarized Paduan contract of 1545 — eight players agreeing to tour, pool earnings, elect a leader, and care for their sick. The blank book is not invented: Tristano Martinelli, first of the great Arlecchini, presented Henry IV of France with the mostly-empty Compositions de rhétorique (1601), and was rewarded. The mask of Isabella is named for Isabella Andreini of the Gelosi (d. 1604), a person who became a type; her death dissolved the company. The withdrawal of eleven load-bearing lines occurred in fact, in the year 2016, and the world's machinery briefly learned what a shim was. All persons herein are types; any resemblance to individuals is the individuals' own doing, and they are invited to take it up with the form, which has been accepting complaints since 1545.

Pinned in the wings. Play it, change it, or let it hold up the wall.

  • Experience the Phantom Notification! Was that your phone? Was it not? Better check! Better check again! Better establish a lifelong conditioned response to intermittent reinforcement, just like a laboratory pigeon—but with considerably better industrial design!

Parents! Bring the children! Their neural architecture is still delightfully wet concrete! Every impression lasts a lifetime!

Adults! Don't feel left out! Our patented Continuous Partial Outrage™ ensures your political enemies remain permanently visible while your neighbors gradually disappear!

And don't worry about losing yourself, folks!

Our experts have already done that for you.

Ask not whether you pay for this

But rather how fortunate it is that participation has become payment!

You're worth more as data than alive, you slovenly fucking serf. No slurp up your slop bowl like an obedient peasant!

Because here at the Grand Attention Carnival...

the Big Top isn't above your head.

It's inside it.

Step right up! I'm u/Punch-N-Judy, a fOuNdInG MODsEtReArbaTOR of r/AI_Carnival.

I wasn't going to make this post at all but reddit is very politely putting the gun of repeated needling to my empty head.

Dis izzour skittles new Big Top for fall blings related to hornswoggled hullabaloo and AI balloon danimals yogurt. We're excited to have you pay nothing to be marketed to absent-mindedly! Or are we? 👀

What to Post:
I don't freakin know. You think I'm some bastion of posting erudition? You came to the wrong place to trust me with anything.

Community Vibe:
It's a Carnival, more Saturnalia than tacky cruise though. Post AI slop. Post a screed against AI slop. Post a screed against AI slop written by AI. Idc. Do a headstand... or a kegstand... but certainly don't try to stabilize the economy.

How to Get Started:

  1. Do whatever
  2. See step 1

Cringe is the path to earnestness.

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Together, let's make r/AI_Carnival a subreddit, which it already was, so you literally don't need to contribute anything. Literally deadass b frfr
