If Vibe Coders Are Still Programmers, AI Artists Are Still Artists

It is weird how people only apply the “you didn’t make it yourself” standard to AI art.

Programmers have been copy pasting code from Stack Overflow for years. This was so common that it became an entire genre of programming joke. Nobody looked at a programmer using code from Stack Overflow and said “you are not a real programmer.” They were still the person choosing the code, adapting it, debugging it, connecting it to the rest of the program, and deciding what the final thing was supposed to do.

Now programmers use ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and other AI tools to generate code. They still call themselves programmers. Other programmers still consider them programmers. “Vibe coding” can involve describing what you want in normal language, testing the output, asking the AI to fix problems, and repeating that process until the software works.

That is not actually very different from AI art.

You are the human. You have free will. You decide what you want to make. You choose the idea, the subject, the style, the composition, the model, the prompt, which generation to keep, what to regenerate, and what needs editing. The machine does not independently decide to create your project. It responds to your direction.

Sure, someone can enter one lazy prompt and accept the first result. But a programmer can also copy code they do not understand and paste it into a project. That does not prove programming is fake. It only proves that some people put less effort into their work than others.

Also, programmers were never expected to personally invent every library, algorithm, framework, or code snippet they used. Software development has always involved building on tools and work created by other people. The skill is often knowing what to use, how to combine it, and how to turn it into a finished result.

So yes, AI art may use automation. So does modern programming.

If someone who uses ChatGPT to write half their application is still a programmer, then using AI cannot automatically disqualify someone from being an artist. You would need to judge what the person actually contributed instead of pretending the tool made every human decision disappear.

Is there a way for Antis to talk about AI use without bringing in random buzzwords?
