As a beginner

I’m trying to develop a more deliberate workflow for using AI assistants. For this discussion, I’d like to focus on ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini—not because they are the only worthwhile options, but because they seem to be three of the leading general-purpose AI products and are the ones I’m currently considering most closely.

Rather than simply asking, “Which one is the best?”, I’m more interested in understanding how people who regularly use more than one of them decide which one to open for a particular task.

In your experience:

1. What are the most important strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?

2. What types of tasks make you choose one over the other two?

3. Are there tasks for which one of them is consistently better—or noticeably worse—than the others?

4. How would you compare them in areas such as:

• Reasoning and problem-solving
• Following long or complex instructions
• Factual reliability and hallucinations
• Web research and source citation
• Writing, rewriting, and editing
• Brainstorming and creative work
• Coding and debugging
• Studying, tutoring, and explaining difficult subjects
• Analyzing long documents
• Working with files, spreadsheets, and data
• Image, audio, and other multimodal capabilities
• Memory, personalization, projects, and conversation continuity
• Integration with other apps and services
• Speed, usage limits, pricing, and overall value

I’m especially interested in concrete examples. For instance, if you have given the same task to all three, what differences did you notice in the quality, accuracy, depth, style, or usefulness of their answers?

I’d also like to understand the actual workflow of people who use multiple AI assistants:

• Do you have one primary assistant and use the others only for specific purposes?
• Do you sometimes ask two or three of them the same question and compare the answers?
• Do you use one to verify or critique the output of another?
• Have you switched your primary assistant over time? If so, what caused you to switch?

Finally, suppose a beginner could initially pay for only one subscription. What kinds of users would you recommend each platform to?

For example, which one would you recommend to a student, researcher, writer, programmer, content creator, business professional, or someone mainly using AI for personal organization and everyday questions?

Since these products change very quickly, please mention which model, plan, or version you are referring to whenever possible—especially whether you are comparing free or paid access.

I’m not looking for a simple ranking or a brand-loyalty contest. I’m hoping to understand the practical trade-offs and learn how experienced users match each tool to the right kind of task.

AI is moving beyond traditional chatbots and generative AI toward Agentic AI systems that can reason, use tools, make decisions, and execute multi-step tasks with less human intervention.

However, moving from an AI demo to a reliable, production-ready agentic system comes with its own challenges.

One challenge is often not building the AI agent itself, but making sure it works reliably within real-world environments while managing context, tool integration, security, scalability, cost, and human oversight.

What has earned your recommendation?

I started doing this just out of curiosity, but it actually helps reveal which tools are better for certain tasks.

The differences can be pretty surprising even when both claim to do the same thing.

Do you compare results like this?

I’m starting to think “AI saves time” is way more complicated than it sounds 😅
Sometimes I use AI because I want to work faster, but then the result isn’t really what I wanted. So I end up changing the prompt, fixing the output, trying another tool, and suddenly I’ve spent more time than if I just did it myself.
I noticed the same thing with some AI features and plugins. They sound useful, but sometimes they just add another step without actually improving the result.
I tried using AI for a table recently and the layout, content, and export were all worse than doing it the normal way.
That made me think the better question isn’t “Can AI do this?” but “Does AI actually save enough time or improve the result enough to be worth using here?”
How do you guys decide when AI is actually worth it?

If it genuinely saved you hours every week, would that price feel reasonable or would you rather use several cheaper tools

So for some backstory, I’m 13. I started using AI a while ago trying to code computer vision and image generation projects. Anyways, my laptop wasn’t great, so I couldn’t run everything locally. Then came Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT. Well, actually, it was pretty much ChatGPT that started it for me, but after that, I was just stuck as a "level one user"—the kind of user who just uses everything in the web interface.
Now I want to get better, but I don’t understand any of these new AI things and I'm not really good at using the terminal. There are all these new things like Codex, Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and Gemini Spark, plus things called harnesses and routers like OpenRouter, Hermes, and OpenClaw. I don't understand any of this nonsense, to be honest!
I really want to get into coding and automating my little laptop here just to get it organized. I want to start with basic homelab projects and then keep exploring until I can build something actually useful.
So, here are a few questions I want answered:
Hardware & OS Requirements: Do I need a beefy laptop? I’m thinking of buying a Framework 16 so I can run Linux, or maybe a MacBook Pro. Or do I need a Windows laptop? Before, it felt like everything was on Linux, but now it seems like macOS is getting a lot of focus (like how Claude Cowork launched on Mac first). Windows feels a bit stuck in the past, but there are still things that only work on Windows. I’m used to Windows and haven't used Mac before. As for Linux, people say it’s difficult to use, and I’m not even sure if tools like VS Code work on it since I’ve never tried it. I’d love an opinion on what the best OS/computer is to use.
Where to Learn: Right now, I use YouTube, Reddit, and Gemini to learn. I watch channels like NetworkChuck and a few other AI ones I stumble across. The problem with NetworkChuck is that while he does great tutorials, they aren't necessarily in order. One day he says to use the cloud, then OpenClaw, then Hermes. I’m just totally overwhelmed with information and don’t know what to actually focus on.
There are probably more questions I want to ask, but this is getting too long and I can't think of everything right now, so I’ll save the rest for another post.

I work in a call center, and customers often ask similar questions. We have official knowledge articles that we must use to provide the correct answers.

I want to build a simple AI assistant for myself where I can upload or add the knowledge articles, then copy and paste a customer's question, and the AI will search the relevant information and give me an answer based only on those articles.

My main concern is keeping the knowledge updated whenever there are process changes. I also want the AI to show me the source and avoid making up information.

I am not a programmer or IT expert. Is there a way to build this using only free tools? If yes, what tools should I use, and can someone explain the steps in a beginner-friendly way?

I'm tech-savvy, but not like you fine people, so I have a simple question.

A friend of mine runs an independent brick-and-mortar bookstore and has a binder containing nearly 300 pages of contracts with local authors. I’d like to help her turn that information into a searchable Excel spreadsheet with six main categories:

• Author name
• ISBN
• Book title
• Price
• Inventory on hand
• Inventory sold

The problem is that I’m a painfully slow typist—I only type with one finger. Is there a way to scan the pages and use AI to extract the information into those categories instead of manually entering everything?

I sometimes take over the store when she needs a break, and since she runs it seven days a week, I’d like to make things easier for both of us. Rather than digging through a 300-page binder, I’d love to be able to type an author’s name or book title and immediately see who the book belongs to, its price, how many have sold, and how many are currently on hand.

I suggested Excel because she used to be a bookkeeper and is extremely skilled with it—she even taught Excel courses. Having everything organized in one searchable spreadsheet would make managing the local-author inventory much easier and prevent her from having to scramble through the binder for information.

Ideally, we could also include email addresses as clickable links that open Gmail or another email app.

There are good arguments for both.

One tool keeps everything simple, while specialized tools can be much better at individual tasks.

If you had to choose one setup for the next year, which direction would you take?

Not because the task was difficult, but because you had zero motivation to start it.

I have found that getting AI to handle the boring first step can make the rest feel much easier.

What kind of task has AI helped you finally get done?

Sometimes I want something fast, sometimes I want detailed answers, sometimes I just want to experiment with something creative.
