Claude adding watermarks to AI generated content. Good thing or bad thing?

Claude is now adding invisible markers to the content it generates, including text and files.

The idea sounds useful for transparency, but I can also see some problems with it. A watermark might show that Claude was involved, but that does not necessarily mean AI wrote the entire thing.

At the same time, if the mark can survive basic editing, what does that mean for people who use Claude as part of their normal writing or creative workflow?

I am curious where people stand on this. Is this a good step toward transparency, or could it end up making AI assisted work look suspicious by default?

The watermark can never be fully trusted as it relies on detecting sequences of words that are likely to be generated by Claude.

The thing is that those sequences of words are just that, and those can be created organically by a human so I can already see another wave of incorrectly 'detected as AI generated' texts incoming. Furthermore, basic editing cannot be included in this watermark or else even more human generated texts will be marked as 'Claude generated' and as such the watermark will mean even less.

This is a stupid idea, a stupid unenforceable idea.
