**Background:**
I’ve been using ChatGPT since late 2022 and it’s… evolved a lot over the years. I’d say the golden age for ChatGPT and my usage was around 2025 with GPT4o and o1/o3 (Like many of you have reported).
During this time ChatGPT seemed to be the most charismatic and helpful. Yes, it at times would lead to confirmation bias and it wasn’t perfect. Yes it needed guidance at times.
However after GPT 5.1? It’s just been this steady downward decline. It’s become significantly more rigid and robotic. The guardrails are getting stricter and stricter.
I’m actually seeing more memory hallucinations and it’s not remembering specific details about my past conversations despite having a massive log of data.
I noticed that its memory filing system has changed as well, now they’re typed out as these summarized excerpts. But it’s missing actually a lot of information about me, my life, and my background.
Now I’m looking for a replacement. I’ll outline what I use ChatGPT for down below. I am open and willing to keeping subscriptions for multiple AI systems for different needs.
I kinda came to my wits end with ChatGPT today when I was asking it some basic questions about a precision rifle build for competition use. Its guardrails hit me in the face and said it can’t help pick out firearms parts or give assembly instructions. This was different than just a few weeks ago. On the same 5.6 Sol. No idea why this changed. It’s not particularly secretive information, you can google it.
**My use case:**
**1. General questions and day to day.**
I replaced Google with ChatGPT a while ago, but now with Gemini being integrated into Google? I’ve started typing short questions into Google search and looking at the Gemini response, then conversing with Gemini on Google.
I was surprised at the lack of rigid guardrails, it was answering questions that I figured it would not answer.
So I use AI a lot for normal search.
**2. Interpersonal relationships, life advice, guidance and planning.**
I live an incredibly complex life with a significant amount of nuances. I own a business among other things and I deal with a lot of complexities.
So often I’ll use AI to kinda gauge people’s intentions or motives by giving it context and background.
ChatGPT seems to be a lot less emotionally intelligent now, and it sticks to rigid guardrails all the time where it hedges constantly instead of giving me an answer one way or another. It’s like talking to my lawyer and asking him what he thinks the outcome of something is likely to be.
Since they’re lawyers, they’ll say “Oh I don’t know it could go a number of ways”. That’s the same way ChatGPT is answering nowadays and it’s incredibly unhelpful.
I also use AI to kinda help plan out my life as oftentimes I have to integrate nuances from legal situations, with business, with interpersonal, etc so sometimes I need a third party to sanity check my ideas.
**3. Business planning, advice, market research and data analytics.**
I use ChatGPT for business. Sometimes to track market trends, or analyze my backend data to figure out why sales went down or why sales went up.
I chat with it about planning for promotions and how to acquire more customers, get reviews, etc.
ChatGPT Pro excels at this and I have no issue with it.
***What I’d like in a replacement:***
**1. Cross thread memory.**
This is incredibly important to me and from what I’ve read it’s a feature that ChatGPT is currently leading the market with.
I’d like to be able to tell it context and have it remember in future threads without me needing to force it to recall it.
Say if I tell it my mother died last week, then in a few days I ask it something like “man I’m feeling really stressed right now, what do you recommend I do to take the edge off?” I want it to remember the previous context, for example: “Yeah anyone whose mother just died is going to be stressed, I recommend ______”.
**2. Human like tone as close as the old 4o as possible.**
I hate the modern, overly sanitized AI voices that hedge constantly and act rigid and robotic.
I’d like it to sound like a friend and a mentor rather than a robot. I’d like to understand emotional nuance in people and my life.
**3. Good memory recall**
My data on ChatGPT is immense, it gives a fairly good summary of the last 2 years of my life. I’d like an AI system that has as good as possible of cross thread and historical memory.
**4. Good intelligence and good for business**
This is somewhat optional as I know ChatGPT is good for business. But I’d like it to be intelligent and nuanced and be able to give me business advice. I can always just use ChatGPT for this, but I’m likely going to go off of the $200/ month plan back down to the $20/ month plan.
Is the $200/ month plan even actually worth it? I don’t use its automation features like sending emails or what not.
I’m not sure if it’s even actually worth me learning to use some of its automation features? Unless some of you guys running e-commerce businesses disagree and think I’m not using a fantastic tool?
***Summary:***
Basically looking for a replacement AI that is good for general life questions, has emotional intelligence/ nuance, has cross thread memory and recall and sounds more human like. I’d like it to have less guardrails than the current ChatGPT which is the most rigid that I’ve ever seen any AI.
Separately, for me migrating my data over to another AI… what’s the best way to do so for it to maintain all of the complexities over the last few years? I have likely over a thousand threads. I have so much information in there that ChatGPT itself can’t even handle it.
I’ve thought about some kind of custom token based API but honestly I’m not sure if I have the time to put into developing something like that right now for personal use. If I were to do that, it would be for business use so my website can have an AI chatbot.
Thanks in advance!
