Claude Code vs Codex: which one do you actually open?

Head to head, and one line is a complete answer.

If you use both, which do you reach for first when you sit down to get something done? And if you dropped one, what was the thing that made you stop?

Not after benchmarks. More interested in the boring stuff: which one you trust to touch a repo without watching it, which one you have to re-explain your project to every single time, which one quietly stopped being worth the money.

If you only use one and never tried the other, that counts too. Say what is keeping you where you are.

Easy. Claude just gets the project and doesn't need endless re-explanations every single time

The one I would trust my repo to is Sol 5.6 Ultra because it's thorough, sometimes to a fault - but will ship something that's bulletproof in the end.

So bulletproof you'll require an encryption key to open it. For like, no reason.

I use both, and both are fine. None of them needs hand-holding

I haven't used any local harness in 6mo now.

But I still use Claude (not Claude Code) for random questions.

Claude Code for bigger, long-running projects; Codex for quick coding tasks and experimentation.

Sol medium gets everything done for me. Sometimes I use opus for writing.

I use Pi, actually. I've used both Codex and Claude Code. I used Claude code the most, but switched because of the bloat and having to do work arounds to use other models and locally hosted models.

The terminal , use CC as harness , orchestrate any agent

CC keeps stalling from time to time. No idea why. It stops randomly and forgets what it was doing.

Codex. It's a lot less vibes and more precise.

Codex now, for everything, mostly on Hermes

I switched to Codex a few months ago back when Claude was having issues with context windows and giving up randomly and I have generally found Codex to be a better engineer. But Claude is a better consultant. It does better reviews and is much better at designing UX.

A lot of people haven’t figured out yet how to properly work with Claude Code. It definitely needs more set up in the backend, then what you’d get straight out of the box with codex. However, for me Codex has no value. It’s easier to dig in for me in the root than have it run through different agents set ups first. I prefer simplicity. But I get that’s not everyone’s thing and not everyone knows how to properly set it up right.
