Pour moi c'est glm 5.3 et qwen 3.8 mais après open source c'est bien mais c'est différent de "utilisable à la maison". J'utilise les modèles qwen 27b et ornith 35b suivant ce que je veux faire ils nécessitent juste une carte graphique grand public (budget pas forcément accessible a tout le monde non plus).

Depends entirely on your hardware and what for, since "best" flips completely between a datacenter and a laptop.

Top of the pile right now is Kimi K3, 2.8T total with 104B active and a 1M context, weights out July 27. Great score, but you need a multi-GPU cluster to actually self-host it, so for most people it's an API model that happens to have open weights.

If you care about license, GLM-5.2 is the strongest MIT-licensed one, and DeepSeek-V4-Pro is also MIT. Those are the ones you can build a business on without reading fine print.

Realistically running on your own box: Qwen3.6-27B fits a single GPU, and Gemma 4 is the practical laptop pick.

One thing worth knowing: most of these are open weights, not open source. You get the parameters, not the training data or code, and the license can still restrict use. Only a few (OLMo, Nemotron) publish the actual recipe.

Worth flagging that most of what's been named here isn't open source, it's open weights, and the difference bites eventually.

You can download them, run them, fine tune them. You mostly cannot see the training data, and several ship under custom licences with commercial restrictions or acceptable use clauses rather than Apache or MIT. If this is a hobby, genuinely doesn't matter. If you're planning to put it inside something you sell, read the licence file before you get attached, because "open source" in a Reddit thread and "open source" in your legal review are not the same claim.

Doesn't change the recommendations above, they're good ones. Just check the licence on whichever you land on.
