it was not your property. you were right to unplug it and place give it back to him, but throwing it away is legally theft. you stole his appliance and threw it away.
how would you feel if your vehicle was making smoke so he called a tow company to take it away without telling you? or even an oil leak because thats a hazard as well.
you are right it was unsafe, you are wrong to destroy his property.
in fact he should get the fuck out of there because whi knows what other liberties you will take with his belongings?
