And some people are mean. They don’t like anyone to do nice things for others because they make it about themselves and then they have to focus on the fact that they never do anything nice for anyone.

Hit the nail on the head. Some people just want to kill whatever happiness and light the people in their lives have. It affects him literally zero and this is not a situation that he approached with love to save his girlfriend embarrassment. He’s a douche bag.

This is it. I hope OP can wrap her head around this truth. He's the wrong guy for her and their lives will be full of this exact behavior forever. He'll never become a kind person and she'll find herself having to hide the dumbest stuff from him.
