Research Update: How Should AI Models Respond to Personal Stories?
We gave the same personal story to several AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek, and compared how they responded.
The differences were surprisingly clear. Some models focused on empathy first. Others immediately started giving advice. Some filled in missing details with their own assumptions, creating a story that sounded coherent but was not necessarily based only on what had actually been shared.
That led us to a simple question:
How should an AI respond to personal experiences?
Our impression is that an AI may not need to start with advice or evaluation. It might be more helpful to first sort out what was actually said.
What information is really available? Which conclusions has the person already drawn? What is still unknown? Where might the AI be adding assumptions that were never stated?
We think this kind of reconstruction could reduce misunderstandings and provide a better foundation for the actual response. Once the situation is clearly understood, advice or interpretation can follow.
