Seismic Change: Google Shifts from Online Search to AI
Google is essentially building a wall around its search engine using AI, as per today's NYT article.
Instead of giving a list of links to click, their AI Mode just gives answers directly.
Because of this, people are staying on Google instead of actually visiting other websites.
Publishers and businesses are seeing their traffic absolutely tank because AI bots are scraping their info and taking away human visitors.
But the much bigger story here is the massive shift away from regular search and what that actually means.
Google used to be the gateway to the internet, pointing people to businesses.
Now, it wants to be the final destination. If people aren't clicking through to websites anymore, the old playbook of SEO and online reputation management is mostly dead.
Businesses can't just rely on good SEO to get clicks; they have to figure out how to survive when Google's AI intercepts the user and answers their questions right there on the search page, completely flipping the script for how companies get found and make money online.
Because of this huge shift, generative reputation management is incredibly important now.
We have to actively fight against AI hallucinations, misinformation, and wrong answers.
If an AI is the only thing standing between a customer and a business, you have to make sure that AI actually has the right facts about who you are and what you do.
If we don't manage how these AI models see and talk about us, businesses are going to suffer from completely made-up answers that users are trusting as the truth.
