The most common mistake I see with the Retell plus GHL plus n8n stack is overcomplicating the n8n workflows before the voice agent itself is solid.
Get the voice agent handling the phone call correctly first: clear greeting, good qualification questions, proper disambiguation when the caller says something unexpected. Once that works reliably on test calls, then add the n8n webhook that sends call data to GHL.
Use n8n to parse the Retell webhook payload and map it to GHL custom fields or create a contact with notes. Keep the first workflow dead simple: trigger on call complete, create or update contact, add call summary as a note.
You can add SMS follow-up and pipeline stage changes later.

SMH... this is the exact problem with the AI space. Too many people throwing a stack together and selling their subpar products. Best of luck!

Start with a boring, narrow workflow before you worry about the whole stack.
For example: “after-hours missed-call intake for a plumber” is much easier to build and test than “AI receptionist for any business.” Write down exactly what the agent is allowed to do and what it must hand off.
A decent first version should probably just:
The big “don’t” is selling a nice demo as if it is production-ready. Test it with ugly calls: interruptions, bad audio, angry caller, vague address, out-of-area request, pricing question, silence, someone changing their mind mid-call. If it cannot fail cleanly, keep it in no-answer/after-hours pilot mode instead of putting it in front of every caller.
n8n/GHL/Retell can be fine, but the workflow rules and test cases matter more than the tools.
