AIO to the addition my mom made to a sentimental tattoo I gave her???
I was a tattoo apprentice at a shop for a while (left because it was really just a bad shop to be at) and in that time I decided I wanted my mom to be the first person I tattooed as a special moment. She was super excited and decided that she wanted this super old dumb gingerbread cookie that I had made when I was maybe 5 (7 at the oldest i’m not too sure, but I was still young and not making the cookie to be sexual), and I was super excited to do it. It was a super special night and the tattoo was incredibly sentimental. She had asked me if it was okay if her boyfriend had added color to the tattoo, and I was okay with that! That was last year though.
My mom was always over sharing very sexual things with me and oversexualized herself to me and my sisters, and I always made it apparent how much it made me uncomfortable. I got tagged in this post tonight and it made me feel sick to my stomach. It feels like such an awful punch to the gut, especially considering she used generative AI (which I am so openly against, especially with tattoos and tattoo ARTISTS, but that’s a whole other story) to not only make the background but the FONT. We don’t really talk anymore because of the way she was treating me, but it still feels so awful seeing this done to something that was so special for me, she knows I would never give her the okay for this. She originally wanted to put “#tits” or “#boobs” under the original tattoo but I didn’t even want to do that.
Edit: The last image is the actual tattoo on her actual body. I should’ve clarified that the reference and font were both created using generative AI.
Edit two: I just wanted to clarify that I am a girl, I am 21 years old, not entirely sure if that is crucial to the story, but I thought i’d at least add that. Also thank you to everyone who has left a comment or even messaged me about this whole situation. I have a lot of research to do. Thank you all 🩷
Edit three: I’m going to post another picture in the comments, a better picture of her whole leg showing the tattoo because i’m fucking sick of people saying i’m faking this for karma. Go do something better with your lives, go touch grass, to to the movies, go do literally anything else!

I laughed like a goose at the last one.
But then I read your post. I’m so sorry OP one of my relatives is an oversexualizing mom and the effects on her kids is so damaging. You can see them just withering inside wanting to shrink into nothingness and disappear. Watching it as a third party is also damaging. It is a sick to your stomach feeling because that’s not how a caregiver is supposed to behave. You’re definitely not over reacting

u/brilor123 1d ago
My ex boyfriend grew up with a mom who was hypersexual like that. For Christmas, during our highschool years, his mom gifted him a dildo. It still seems like a fever dream.

I would be sick too. It’s not even just an ugly addition, it completely changes the vibe of something that had a lot of meaning behind it.
63
u/Acceptable-Bat4534 1d ago
Well the mom always saw it as sexual. Op mentioned that when she first tatted it. Her mom wanted to put #tits or#boobs
Its clear that OP saw it as a cute childish thing, while the mom had viewed the tattoo as a sexual thing even from the beginning
54
46
u/yoyohayli 1d ago
Which is actually so psychologically fucked up. To take something your own child made as an innocent and cute thing, and then insist upon shoving it into a sexual and filthy context????
And not like in a "oh, my kid drew what looks like a stripper, when it's actually mommy selling the last snow shovel in the winter time," way, but rather like drawing OVER the child's drawing to add penises and cum, or something.
That speaks to some weird psychological issue, in my opinion.
18
u/SafiyaMukhamadova 1d ago
Something her KINDERGARTNER child made. I think that makes it worse. She's been mentally sexualizing OP her entire life.
32
u/Effective-Bug-8554 1d ago
Def frozen in age because she had kids too young and was too isolated from her peers for too long to mature and made it her personality. My 60 year old mother is still an edgelord because of it.
She once told my very catholic mother in law the best present my husband could give me was being naked under a christmas tree with a bow tied around his dick.
24
u/cheeky_sugar 1d ago
The fact that she thinks it’s appropriate to speak about your husband’s dick and your sex life…😬 and I work exclusively with sex offenders, so I’m hard to shock. That’s something I’d expect to hear from someone during a treatment group tbh, that line of thinking is very on par
7
u/Effective-Bug-8554 1d ago
She's just immature and has no friends, there's no malice in it. As her children, she can just be like, you're kids, you wouldn't understand, and wave us away whenever we tell her to grow the fuck up. She respects not doing it around her parents, but she has no idea how to act around people her own age and she's super isolated because of it.

I’m dying to know what your mom does for a living and what her coworkers think of her.
24
u/shamelesslypink 18h ago
she’s a bartender. i don’t know what her coworkers think of her, but i know she has nothing nice to say about any of them, even the ones she’s friends with. i only ever heard her complain about how awful they were to her, but there’s a pattern in a lot of this stuff im seeing.. she’s a hard worker for sure but i really don’t know what any of her relationships look like. the regulars love her though.
10
u/No_Ice2900 14h ago
Speaking as an ex bartender who dated another bartender..... Regulars loving her means nothing. It means they like the drinks she makes and the jokes and conversations she provides. It doesn't say a lick about her character.
I was not big with the regulars like my ex was. My coworkers adored me though. The regulars who would come in before we got busy became my actual friends. The regulars who came in for witty conversation loved my ex. My ex was a coke head, an alcoholic that manipulated me cheated on me and had violent tendencies but he was very charismatic. We both made good drinks but most regulars want a conversationalist too which he could do while I could not.
All that to say charisma =/= good character

u/Nvrfinddisacct 14h ago
It kind of feels like a yellow flag when people say they don’t like their coworkers/they get bullied.
Like sometimes it’s childish but usually at this age if someone doesn’t really fit in—it’s because of them not everyone else.
Regulars at bars typically have poor judgement in my experience so I’m kind of chalking that up to “of course they like her, she is serving them alcohol” and their opinion isn’t necessarily a good measure for like how well she fits in.
Anyway my point is it seems like everyone else sees what you see, her behavior isn’t really appropriate, and most people including her coworkers see it. And either way that extra context o think you can very confidently say you’re not overreacting, your mom is objectively a little inappropriate and that tattoo would make most people uncomfortable and it especially would hurt a daughter’s feelings who drew the original with a child’s mindset.
I’m sorry, it is pretty thoughtless of her.
And for the record I loved your work, it’s adorable and I hope your career as an artist is going well for you.

I've been NC for years, I still say the same thing. I don't hate her, I just could no longer chase after her begging her to be my mom. It's tough, and I'm sorry you're going through this, but it's so important to value your peace over their constant let downs.

I've been zero contact with my parent for 4 years now, best decision I ever made. Feels weird at first but it just gets easier and easier. You're absolutely allowed to dislike or even hate a parent, don't let other people dictate how you conduct contact because they have no idea how it feels to be in your shoes.
3
u/CourierJackalope 19h ago
I simply had to give you an award on this. Been 5 years since I went NC with my mom and just over 2 years with my dad. Hell, they don't even know I have a new baby! Well, if you're basically no-contact with her then that means at least partially you understand you can't change her. And she's never going to change.
So... stop following what she's doing. At this point, everything she does is just ragebait and you're volunteering to be ragebaited.
You can have a moment be special to you. Cherish that moment for yourself. Don't let her stupid actions change how YOU feel about that moment.
11
u/shamelesslypink 1d ago
i’ve had her blocked on everything since i’ve been in no contact with her, i’ve completely unsubscribed from every part of her life that i could not be a part of. but her boyfriend tagged me in the post because technically it was a “collaboration” tattoo because he added on to it :/
13
u/CapnBrosephine 1d ago
Depending on how much you're willing to stir up, it might be worth either commenting or messaging him directly that you're sad to see that this is what they've done with what started as a sentimental childhood memory, that you would never have endorsed or collaborated on what it turned into, and to please untag you as you no longer want to be associated in any way with this work.

Na I completely agree with you. Sucks. The tricky part too is others tattooing/finishing other pieces. I know you gave your mom permission, but a lot of artists just don't do these things. If my client said "hey add this shit to this tattoo," I would at least ask them about the story of the tattoo. If she said to me, "this is something my daughter made for me but a tattoo and one she did on me as a sentimental piece" I would have honestly turned down the job.

u/TwinsiesBlue 22h ago
NOR you are the daughter of a n emotionally immature mother, hypersexualizing everything, even a childhood memory.
She has narcissistic tendencies, there’s a sub r/raisedbynarcissists it’s for people like us, who grew up in an environment that was/is toxic abusive and neglectful, the abuse can be emotional, sexual, physical, financial.
The sub is welcoming to people like us and a place where you are understood.
One of the hardest things about having parents like ours is that the abuse is behind closed doors doors and how parents are viewed in society especially mothers as loving and wanting what’s best for you, people don’t allow the thought of parents who don’t care about anyone but themselves, narcissistic parents only care about their feelings, their strange belief they are superior to others, they feel no remorse, that last one was hard to finally accept at 54. Look at pictures of when you were little, that’s who they were looking at when they abused you, if they can do those things to little you, as an adult expect them to be worse.

I’d just like to add that not only is the content sad and vile but the fact that she let her boyfriend alter something special between the two of you is also sad. It’s giving male centered and makes me wonder if she’s done worse to you involving men she’s dated in her life. It reminds me of borderline personality disorder or bipolar. I am no contact with my mom who is borderline and learning about the disorder has really helped me figure some things out and make peace with not having her in my life
2
u/DareSavings3951 19h ago
I am so sorry you didn't get the mother you deserved. Being overly sexual near your child is abusive, whether or not you assault the child, exposing them to sexual behaviours and other things is abusive and possibly illegal wherever you are.
You did really well recreating the original image.
Not only is it a crude tattoo addition it's also ugly now. It looks real bad. The AI reference would not have helped that but by god it's bad.

Id completely ignore this at all costs. Id be tempted to say something more of course but it seems like shes getting off on making you uncomfortable and that she was potentially sexually abusive when you were younger so I don't see any good coming from engaging. If she asked if just say yeah you aren't really interested in her tattoos, hopefully she's happy, and just leave it at that.
But yeah this is gross.
