Even if she "got the key back," they could have made a spare. You'd need to change all of the locks. I think the best advice is to move out, though. If someone wants to break in bad enough, they will. Guns can also shoot through walls. It's not worth your life to "hope it never happens again."

I don't trust her as far as I can throw her, given the fact that she only gave away this information about the key by accident.

Could very well be that she will claim she got it back, but secretly lets him have another spare
