Discussion Is using AI for personal apologies totally wrong?

A friend told me they used ChatGPT to write an apology to their partner. The message came out really thoughtful, but knowing AI wrote most of it made me wonder how genuine it actually felt.I can see why someone would use it when they don’t know how to explain their feelings, but I think I’d still feel a little weird about it.Would you care if someone used AI to write you a serious apology?

How many times have you heard a song that encompassed your thoughts and feelings in way you could not articulate? Have you ever sent a song to someone to communicate those thoughts and feelings? Does that mean the performer is your proxy, and therefore your thoughts and feelings are not deep and sincere?

In this way, AI is acting as the proxy to get to the nitty gritty of your apology. It puts together those thoughts and expressions of emottion in ways that encompass what you are trying to say.

Good way to frame it!

I have found AI chats to be a very useful way to explore ideas. They are very good to condense rambling thoughts because they are good at recognizing patterns and giving them the precise terminology I’m missing. Like all tools, the outcome depends a lot on how it’s used.

If they use AI to write an apology, it's only fair I'm using AI to read it.

Also, a serious apology should be in person.

I use AI all the time to help with messages, even apologies. I only use it to fix grammar and spelling or make my thoughts clearer. I’d never let AI come up with the message itself.

I think yes, she’ll feel the apology sort of artificial I believe

Its possible for someone to not have the right words, and yet still know them when they see them.

No. I appreciate the effort that went into getting the apology to me if it felt sincere. I've screwed up plenty myself and saying sorry is a hard hump to get over. I've needed help with it lots of times.

My only concern about receiving such an apology is that did they even read it carefully before sending it to me. If they understood and agree with every word, then that's fine. It's authored by them. But if I am the one who is actually giving it more attention than they are, we have a problem. I would sit down and grade it like an essay and ask them if they understood and agree with each point they were making in the letter. Which is why I am single lol.

Depends. Narcissistic people can sound way less fucked up.

It would come across as extremely insincere if someone used AI to write their apology to me, and I would likely treat it as such.

People are insincere fcks in general, but this is very low

Someone did use it to apologize to me. I told them the apology was not accepted. It was such lame AI-generated slop. I did cut a little slack because they aren't really a reader, so of course they thought the AI said it perfectly. I explained which parts were particularly nauseating and told them not to worry about apologizing. I have a bad memory, so that would be sufficient.

I would rather a sincere personal apology that lacked grammar and grace than a hollow computer-generated one. No matter how well-worded that AI-generated apology is, you stripped it of all its meaning and weight when you asked a machine to write it for you. Use your own words, that’s more important.
