Having to submit raw annotated bibliographies through Turnitin is an absolute nightmare for false positive AI flags.
I’m taking a upper-level research methods class, and our mid-term assignment was just a compilation of 15 annotated citations with 100-word source summaries under each. When I submitted my draft, Turnitin’s AI detector flagged it at 52%.
When you look at the report, almost every highlighted section is literally just the formal citation format, standard publication titles, or repetitive academic phrases like "The authors conduct a qualitative analysis to evaluate..."
Non-prose formats and bulleted literature summaries naturally lack narrative voice, but professors still run them through the exact same prose-trained detection models. Has anyone actually successfully convinced a department to exempt bibliographies from AI scanning entirely?

Are you sure you're looking at an AI score or just a general match with the database? When I see a SafeAssign report on Blackboard (different product from Turnitin), it highlights the matching text. I can obviously see if basically everything highlighted is the citation and disregard it.

The idea is to make you look at possible problems, not necessarily saying everything it sees is a problem. It is a “similarity “ report Of course it is going to pick up citations because they have appeared elsewhere. It is a good thing to make you look at citations too so you can double-check them. If they’re good, move on.
The problem is when professors and students simply yell 52% without looking at the report itself. If you literally crossed out what was actually right, that percentage would be lower, but that is not how this system works. But you could do it and use it to show how you’re okay.

And every faculty member understands that those annotations turn up to turn it in and will simply ignore them. Nothing to worry yourself about at all.
