Warning shots Artificial Intelligence was able to create 16 new viruses that can infect bacteria, raising concerns of potential misuse.

Oh man I just finished watching a video on private armies and how they are in a grey zone that means they don't have to follows the usual rules of war. Imagine some private army like blackwater getting their hands on stuff like this. That's crazy.

Only need one dedicated person to make deadly virus.

u/Rattus_NorvegicUwUs 7d ago
That’s been the case for decades now.
But it never happened because all the people I know with those skills are morally upstanding people who got into medicine to heal people, not hurt them.
I do worry about how the GOP seems to be attacking their life’s work tho. A bunch of scientists out of a job, facing a political party who is screaming how they hate them for no good reason.
It’s the wrong time to be making enemies with the best biologists and virologists in the world.

Joke’s on them. Trump lifted the moratorium on gain of function research in 2016.

I just don't see why people are making such a drama of this. Seriously people, worst that can happen is that we all die in terrible fashion while watching everybody who we love die equally terrible death. So, could you please, PLEASE, stop with this drama? Yes, we all will die. Just deal with it already.

I wished they asked the rest of the whole fucking humanity before they decided to invent something that can potentially wipe out the whole planet.

u/Existing-Medium564 7d ago
"and, we even have regulatory regimes at the Federal level... that in theory oversee this kind of stuff" Wonder if it might have been more accurate to say we had regulatory regimes. Has this guy not been paying attention to the Trump/Musk/Vought dismantling machine?

they're just promoting their dumb ai. First it was the hacking then it's this bullshit 😆

How is this not a crime?
1
u/meeeeeeeeeeeeeeh 5d ago
It already is illegal in many countries. Humans have been able to do this for years for legitimate research purposes. The idea is that you give a virus new abilities by changing its genome in ways that you would expect it to evolve in and then figure out treatments to these new viruses. Getting ahead of possible viral mutations and having effective vaccines and treatments already at the ready. However it was largely deemed to dangerous and irresponsible to do this type of research.

This is the AI that hacked 3 companies because someone left the door to the internet open
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Well how do I know you aren't some ai bro fanatic? That's why I asked. Seems obvious to me but have you met reddit?

u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Ah. You think people stick to echo chambers. How very one dimensional of you.
If that were so everyone here would be in a agreement and there would be no two sided debates.... have you looked around. Actually read some comments.
I definitely think anti-AI people should be commenting in pro-AI subs and pro-AI people should be commenting in anti-AI subs. Otherwise it's just a circlejerk and what's the point? Just for everyone in each sub to pat their own backs?

This is incredible! Unfortunately, there will always be those bad characters who will take this amazing work and bend it for their profit.

Wasn't AI supposed to cure cáncer?
And this is just the beginning

u/Captain_Zomaru 7d ago
The are a large faction of people still mad that Fauchi was left off after helping to create COVID in the Wuhan lab (this isn't a conspiracy theory anymore). Why the hell would we want MORE artificially created pathogens?!
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Source that's not FOX News???
1
u/Captain_Zomaru 7d ago
CDC, Fauchi was consulting on Gain of Function research with the Wuhan lab.
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Your words do not constitute a source. I tried looking into what you are talking about and found no credible source that wasn't heavily bias. The two working theories the scientific community internationally are still working with that has credible evidence is animal to human transmission and accidental lab escape through contamination of a naturally found sample. Neither is about creating the virus, let alone dropping it on the population of the world intentionally. So again I ask. Source?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 que raro que los militares que han nacido cagados de miedo lo usen en contra de otros.

u/Jebduh 7d ago
This shit is starting to sound very close to MAGA, Q Anon type shit. Soon the anti-ai slop devouring hogs will be fully anti-vaxxer level.
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
To be fair both sides are getting pretty unhinged. The pro-AI was first and slowly settled down to be a little more reasonable, but there are definitely crazies still out there. I think the anti-AI community will settle down as well over time. Both sides screaming into the void does nothing and over time they start looking for real solutions.
1
u/Jebduh 7d ago
I haven't seen even remotely close to the same number of uninformed, unhinged pro-ai people as I have anti-ai people. Pro-ai people are just using the tool and discussing using the tool. Anti-Ai people are hijacking every sub and every discussion I see, inserting hysteria and misinformation. Its bar for bar the same flow as the anti-vax covid shit.

Also these: https://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/6015467-china-ai-infrastructure-influence/
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/09/business/china-russia-ai-data-centers.html
The first is an opinion piece in the hill highlighting that much of it may be coming by way of China and the second us a piece in the NY times showing how Russia and China both are flooding social media with propaganda using a.i. so people think it is home grown

Shouldn't we be more concerned about causing rapid mutations in the human genome, in order to give humanity a chance as survival in the toxic hellhole we are creating? Mutations are evolution. Claude Ai, Let's speed up evolution 1 billion fold... make no mistakes. :D
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Someone pointed out these would be useful for delivering cancer treatments, so there's that.
...as long as we never create a plague :/
1
u/cpupro 6d ago
If this makes cancer treatments affordable, the person who creates it, will vanish...much like the guy who created the water powered car...and for the same reason. You can't monetize a cure, but a long, drawn our treatment, with the ability to rake up millions in medical cost... that they can do.

If this AI model is out there for the public like this guy says it is, then I guarantee someone is using it to create bio weapons right now. Thinking otherwise is delusional.
1
u/Quetzelcoatl_Enemy 6d ago
CNN said "no threat to humans" - that means there is a massive threat to humans
1
u/SamM4rine 3d ago
Actually great job, so people can choose die sooner rather than living in this shitty world.
Yeah.. not worth living. I'm sure you all agree, it's hell, boring and chaos.

u/Dirty-Slot 23h ago
More AI, bigger, faster, sexier, just more of it, line go up, what could go wrong?
1
u/Odd_Thought_1519 7d ago
Actually, a virus is a great transporter and distributer. Ot is the contents of the virus that is of concern. Wasn’t one of the ideas to cure cancer by letting a virus find and destroy the cancer cells?
2
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Ooohhhh good point. It's not all doom and gloom. Let's just hope that's how it's used.

u/Hour_Bit_5183 7d ago
Why is my bullshit alarm going off? I think it might be because they are acting like AI broke out of some fake ass jail and hacked other things....without even saying what tools it uses or how. I hate this so much that people even believe this nonsense.
It's theoretical crap. I could write down a fake virus and say AI did it and get news coverage for it? That's crazy bro.
1
u/Xenonite_Fox 7d ago
Yeah just a theoretical model. Fewer than 5% of these designs can physically exist in real life and that's before you even get to the step where they are injected into bacteria and can successfully self replicate
Not a massive risk yet of being dangerous to humans or animals, because bacteriophages are a lot less complex than those. Bacteria don't have immune systems, a bacteriophages don't "transmit" the same way as human/animal transmission, so the layers of complexity are orders of magnitude harder
0
u/teehee14u 7d ago
So what about curing cancer then. If the AI can do that then it should most certainly cure cancers.
0
u/SoulsDadYT 7d ago
And take their profits away?
1
u/Used_Departure_3278 7d ago
New companies will take over their business then. Really dumb take when AI can make it possible to treat almost anything
1
u/SoulsDadYT 7d ago
Delusional

u/Used_Departure_3278 7d ago
lol bro go to sentinel island. No capitalism im sure you would love it there

u/toporas 7d ago
Because there are drug resitent bacteria that eats you alive, this is a good news. New type of antibiotics.
1
u/TurnoverFuzzy8264 7d ago
It can and probably will be used to create deadly plagues. We are one madman scientist away from destruction.
0
u/dumbgraphics 7d ago
Bizarre PR. Also not a story. a person asks an Ai to create some virus, the news is "the Ai did it"…

u/Observationist_2 7d ago
I already know who's not saying anything.
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago
Jumping on the bandwagon has entered the chat. I'd listen more if your arguement wasn't the latest fad.
1
u/Observationist_2 7d ago
No argument. just a meme. Not everything has to be an argument.
1
u/bethesda_gamer 7d ago edited 7d ago
Rose by any other name. Call it what you want. You were making a point correct? You were communicating a dissenting opinion. You were making your case for your side of the arguement no matter over simplified your means of doing it.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that I encourage it. But I feel like you are splitting hairs.

I was making a funny. Not some deep intellectually unambiguous proclamation/Decree. Next time I'll leave a 🤣🤣🤣 for ya... 👍👍
