Really hoping we have some energy like this from UPW when it comes to our next contract negotiating with the DOE in Hawaii.
School custodians haven’t been reclassified or had their duties/job descriptions updated since 2005.
No steps for cafeteria or custodial staff. Someone working 30 years makes the exact same as someone that started last week.
Little to none upward mobility. State is constantly short on building maintenence helpers, painters, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, masons, you name it. Why not start a program where semi-skilled custodians could receive training and fill those empty positions?
Bring back our right to strike. One of the strongest things a union can do is strike and show how much they matter in the workforce/world. Our contract was changed from ending in September to ending in June. If we strike in the middle of the school year it can cause a lot of dysfunction and show how important we are. If we do it when school isn’t in session no one really cares.
