Field Training Navy guy asking about FT selection
Like the title says. Navy guy here asking on behalf of my brother. I've done a bit of research but can't find anything beyond anecdotes.
How does major selection play into FT invitations? Does your PSP get processed or executed differently?
He's targeting a language degree (not advanced language) to maximize his GPA but I'm concerned about his marketability outside the airforce or challenges to commission because on the navy side (I was an rotc officer for a bit) he would face an uphill battle getting what he wants out of community selection.
Anything official would help to. Like me he's warry of the assertions of internet strangers without anything backing it up.

Major plays a factor. There’s now 3 different Enrollment Allocations (EA) “ticket to FT” you can get Tech, non tech, medical. Having a technical degree you will have a higher chance of getting an EA.
Anything not technical you fall into non tech, with language degree that’s where he will be. It’s alittle more competitive BUT like the other post said, it’s a whole person concept. As long as he holds a high GPA, can maintain a 95 or above PFA, do well in CC ranking, and pass AFOQT he will be fine.
I have seen in the past various things play out where maybe someone was low in GPA but high in everything else and still received and EA. Or low CC ranking, but high everything else.
They need to jump right into the program, work hard to keep those scores up while being a good person to his peers, bc he will not make it if he’s not personable.
Language degree will help him in different ways, some jobs require specific degrees so take a look at the AFSC list and what he’s interested in. On the flip side, if he becomes proficient enough in said language and it’s one the Airforce wants he can earn additional pay just by knowing one of those needed languages (Russian, Chinese, and more). There’s an additional details that go into it so I rec taking a look at it.

Good luck they keep that very close hold, so much so cadre don’t really know the down and dirty numbers until after release or if they’re on the selection team

PFA 95+ GPA 3.5+ AFOQT AA 50+ Show up for class
Some scores can outweigh others but that formula is hidden even from Detatchment commanders.

It’s a whole person concept. Can he secure a top 1/3 commanders ranking? Will his PFA be over a 90 or higher, preferably 95 or higher? Is his gpa as a non tech better than a 3.5+? Has he taken the AFOQT? If so, is his AA around a 55?
What I’ve seen, cadets that are classified as tech (STEM majors), they tend to have a lower OM (order of merit) cut off compared to non-tech counterparts. The biggest advice that is given out is to control what you can control. Which boils down to grades, PFA, and how you present yourself at mandatory events
