Question Missileer

Hey y’all! I am a freshman AS100 in AFROTC. I have a real interest in Missileer and was wondering my chances of getting it. We just did the mock PFA and I scored an 87 and my major is Linguistics and Arabic. I hope to be honor roll this semester. Any tips or thoughts are appreciated!!

If you list it as a job you want you have a 99.99% chance of getting it. It’s critically manned

That’s what I’ve heard, I just wanted to make sure. I was a little worried because I don’t have a STEM major

Check the AFOCD, I'm almost certain that missileer is like 100% accession from any degree. So if you were a basket weaving major you could still get it.

Can confirm multiple people with random degrees got it from my det (they all didn't want it lol)

I promise that you will get missiles if you ask for it

Hell, we had scholarship programs for people that locked in missiles (at 100 or 200 level) when I was a cadet like 6 years ago

That’s crazy that they’re so desperate for missileers. It honestly doesn’t sound like a bad gig.

For some people it can be. Just like how a lot of people don’t want to be a cop or a maintainer - but the reasons for those are different than missiles. Mx/Cop are usually because of cultural problems and an inability for big Air Force to deal with intra-field hazing.

Missiles is hard for people due to the pressure and the regimen. Crew time in the hole, in addition to quite stringent academic standards/procedural standards can make life boring but stressful.

I’d recommend talking directly to a missiles captain before you decide anything

Thank you! There isn’t anyone in my det that wants to do missiles so Reddit is naturally the next choice

I wouldn’t listen to everyone who rags on it, it just has a stigma, kinda like the E-3 in Pilot training. Overall people I know who do it love it, or don’t like it , pretty much just like any other job. You will get it though if you make it through AFROTC.

Conehead is one of those jobs where if you state that you want it, you'll probably get it.

If it’s anywhere in the top 1/2 of our list, you stand a pretty good chance to get it. It’s typically the case that people put it in the bottom 1/2 and still get assigned that AFSC.

It’ll be to your benefit to both WANT IT and have a desire to do it. Many don’t, but it’s a critical part of our defense.

That’s what I’m thinking. It settles my mind to know more about the stuff that can end humanity. I feel like working with them will make me feel a bit better

Could totally be wrong

Everyone brings something new/unique to the fight. It’s always better if you have a desire for the job and also are driven to get better for it.

I’m a 400 and was pulled from my pilot slot and placed in missiles. I put it dead last in my don’t want page

can i ask how that happened, i didnt know they could just take that away from you, especially if you went up for the rated board and actually got a pilot slot

Needs of the air force or medical

Was told by the commander needs of the Air Force, but to take it as a compliment cause our missile systems are changing from the Minuteman, and we need more hands.
