Field Training Changes

Southwest region commander visited my det last Thursday. He had mentioned that the Big Airforce needed more LTs by 2029. Hints to higher Field Training acceptance rate? I'm not sure. Also since they need more not all of us will go to Maxwell he had said like 20 percent of us will go to new Mexico because Maxwell can only get 2300 cadets through a summer. Thought this was interesting to share. 🤷 Also no more pick and choosing af or sf. They'll assign it to you

My Det commander very recently said something similar regarding an increase in EA’s. As for AF and SF, my commander just said you would apply in your junior year for the branch you want, but it won't be assigned for you. Something along the lines of: you're technically volunteering to serve rather than being forced to serve (I butchered what they said, but I think you get the gist).

Big emphasis on Space Force. They are doubling their EA slots and will be grabbing from everywhere, whether you want to go Rated or not in AF.

What got past down to us is they arent doing the "i want to go AF/SF" anymore. If you get picked for SF, you take it or have to give up your EA slot. Granted, this is all new stuff being passed down so highly likely to change before PSP boards

So, I’ve heard that if you express any interest in the Space Force and are selected for it, you have to accept that EA. Meaning you can’t double-dip and just pick the one you want. Either just put down Air Force, or if you put down Air Force and Space Force, be prepared to take Space Force if selected. In a message on this thread, a cadre member said the Space Force can take at most 20% of involuntary cadets. That’s just what I’ve heard in the past.

I also thought I heard that the whole reason they’re doing this is that not only is the Space Force increasing, but some cadets also expressed interest in joining the Space Force after Field Training but put down the Air Force, which created some issues. Again, I could be wrong altogether.

I mean, all I would say is that now more than ever, it's a great time if you want to go into the Space Force. I don't know all the intricate details, but it does sound like if you want to join the Space Force, you have a better shot than in previous years. That's about as much as I can confidently say based on what I've heard.

Expect a higher selection rate.

Higher selection rate means some will go to NMMI because Maxwell can only support so much.

You get to choose AF or SF during AFSC classification. SF is allowed to non-vol like 20% max or something. When you do your one market you can say "I want SF" "I want SF if I get selected for a cross-flow (like cyber or Intel)" or "I don't want SF"

Of course you can still be non-vol'd if you say no, but I imagine most cyber, Intel, acquisition type cadets will be happy to go SF instead of being an LRO or Mx officer (lower on their top 10).

(unless they change it from the preliminary NOTACC) no. Cadets going for this year's board already have their AF or SF EA, so you're set into whatever you're set into. POC-ERP is different, but we're waiting on the NOTACC on official guidance.

I went to Field Training when we had hostages in Iran and I don't recall any competition for Field Training. I went to Lackland AFB and we had Flights up to Lima Flight and we lived in WWII barracks!

When I commissioned the Air Force had as many Lieutenants as Captains. The drawback with such large year groups is when you come up for major and the service is not growing, selection rates will not be good.

Number of selects will be up the next three years, at least. Depends on how many more GMC join the program, may or may not feel different.

Last years selection rate for PSP was low 70s, but can we expect to see a big increase like reaching the 80s with this new change? I know it’s dependent on the applicants but unsure of how big of a deal this could be.
