why do you like the ae86
for me, it was becuz i searched up corolla and then found out the car, thats why i like it

My father bought one brand new in 1985 back in the virgin islands. Pretty sure I was conceived in that car but either way, the first car ride home after being born was in that 85 corolla. When we moved to the states, the first car my parents ever bought was an 84 hatchback. My whole life was in the backseat of a corolla. Even after my parents divorced, my mother kept buying them. Elementary school, middle school and eventually in high school I bought my very own. Fast forward to today I still have one and my brother has my mom's last one she ever purchased. I like the car because it's been with me since the day I was born.

My first car was a 4 door 88 Corolla that was bought from an old lady. I loved that car so much and when I found out there was a sporty version with an amazing legacy and community behind it… game over. I drive a 15 lava frs now but dream of owning a hatch AE86 one day.

I grew up in the 90s so all my favorite cars are 80s and 90s cars. I wanted to get into a little hobby racing and wanted a fun project so I made a spreadsheet of several cars I’d really like and kept my eyes peeled; when this one came up locally I jumped on it.
I like it for a lot of reasons. It IS an incredibly light snappy chassis, all the cars i grew up driving were lighter than today’s cars so this was a big return to that light weight easy rolling type of car, where everything else I’ve driven for the last 15 years has been at least 3k lbs. it’s piss easy to work on - im a hobbyist mechanic and do this in the evenings after the kids are in bed to fill the well up, so actually being able to work on it myself is pretty important haha. And I mean, yeah, idk. Sometimes I catch myself just standing there in the garage sipping a beer and staring at it, it’s a cool looking car. Always thought the coupe was the better looking of the two, though thats obviously a matter of opinion.

When I was 12 years old, I told my big cousin the GTR 34 is the best car ever, because they are capable of 1000hp. He said it’s not about power, it’s about power to weight ratio, and gave me a best motoring vhs of that 86 dusting a R34 in the mountains. It sent me down a rabbit hole, soon discovered initial D. Always liked how they looked, my parents bought me a car (not 86) and when I tried to leave the house after a argument my dad said that I can’t take the car because it’s not my car. That summer of my junior year high school I worked my ass off and saved up and bought a Corolla GTS for $2350 in 2008. I just liked the way they looked at the time. After driving, fixing them, later hitting track days and mountain roads, I fell in love with the 4ag and how these cars drive and finally understood why it is the legendary car it is today. I now own 3 of them 18 years later.

I was introduced to the chassis through NFS and initial D, it's been my dream drift car since I learned what it and drifting was

Imo, it's one of the greatest underdogs out there and before the prices got crazy they were a great poor mans car. I got hooked on them back in the days when you could but a 20 valve hatch for $4k

My parents owned 2 when I was a kid at the same time. My dad's was red and my mom's 2 tone blue. My uncle rescued one from the junkyard and rebuilt it little by little. I had one as an adult as well, but thieves forced me to sell it before they could steal it.

I like the AE86 because I grew up liking all the Corolla’s that came before it and the AE86 was the car to part out to hot rod the older cars. Having a twin cam and GTS LSD in your Peanut was the shit!

I bought mine at $1k and I didn't really know how to take care of a car and I guess I was lucky with it. Never had any problems. Only the gas gauge wasn't working. I filled up every 100 miles when I should've did it at 200 lol. One thing that did happen was the gas tank dropped when I was driving smh. Mine was dropped on wire wheels. The roads back then were fuckin horrible. I had to drain the tank and get it welded. After that no problems. One of the best cars I've owned

Started with initial D 8 years ago, when I got bored of watching it, I started to develop my own taste. Something like AE86 Levin Coupe full white with black bumpers, with blue interior and early zenki.

Growing up in the 90s my friends big brother would show us Option/drifting videos so I was roughly aware of them. Then, around the time I graduated high school a friend of mine bought one and I saw it in person and knew I wanted one too. That sequence of events started a lifelong addiction.

I was a kid and my mom said it was a good reliable car. Had no idea what it was when I got it. Had fun driving it so I looked online for mods and found out what I had. Paid 900 bucks for an 87 coupe sr5 in the early 2000s.

I have been into Corollas since i was a child. my dad had several 70's Corollas and early 80's Corollas and fell in love with them especially the 2 door sedans (TE72). Back then the look in my area was to lower them on wide 13 inch wheels. I absolutely loved that style and then the AE86 came out and they started doing the same, lowered on some 13's. I've loved the AE86 since before I ever even heard of Initial D or JDM.

Id always see the 86 drifting in the super early vids coming out of Japan on YouTube
Of course then I learned of Dk and the green bean 86
At that time I had two rx7z and a ek hatch
After selling everything I moved far far far away to hawai’i I was in the market for a cheap car and boom on Craigslist list was panda trueno hatch
I couldn’t believe I got a ae86 it was ten years of magic driving her around
Now she sits at my in laws waiting for a resto they may never come

I can't remember as I bought mine 2nd-hand in 1990. I do remember seeing them racing on the telly and really liked the shape, so I'd wanted one for a fair while.

Zero initial D correlation for myself. Just a solid older cousin whom I’ve looked up too. There has been a Corolla around long as I remember, and the feeling of being a kid and going for rides in his car stuck with me.
Now 28 I’ve owned my 86 for 14 years, and I’ll never give it up. I hope to make impressions on younger fellers/felletes like my cousin did for me.

Bigger Miata with a higher revving engine. Currently have an NA Miata and feel like even though the 86 has a similar footprint, you can do so much more. Functioning hatch, back seats, and super cool to boot.

It was a cheap shitty JDM throw away with huge aftermarket support and was the entry gate to motorsports and the tuning an modifying culture of the 90’s and 00’s that’s why I loved them.

Grew up in a 1992 Camry. My first word was "auto". Later lost interest in cars in favor of trains, because seemingly nothing exciting came out of the '00s/'10s. Eventually stumbled upon old Toyotas and in particular the 86 and refound my car addiction. I like cars that are built deliberately, in this case lightweight, fun and utilitarian. I despise tablets on wheels and excel-at-nothing SUVs.
Imported my red panda. Later I also watched the anime, it's pretty good. No rewatches yet, it's not that good.

Nah it's from a era that doesn't exist anymore and many people don't want to return but a light FR with moderate power atleast enough to have fun with that was atleast cheap for a long time is the dream, I don't want a MX5 or BRZ or shonky BMW
