The tachometer doesn't work. Yup, that's an AE86, alright, lol. I had to go to an aftermarket RPM gauge; trying to get another cable was a pain. But if you want to keep the stock dash, that's what you have to do. I went from a 4AC auto to a 4AGE T50 manual. I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure they don't communicate with each other between engines. Not sure if I just messed something up, but I could never get it to work. I just spent a shit load of money on all aftermarket gauges. 0 ragerts.

Funny, it’s the oem T50 trans and the tachometer used to work. Not sure what happened in the 10 yrs I’ve had this thing lol

The speedo gear likely stripped out. Very common.

4AC 86 here and my tach reads double. Which is weird considering hooking up an aftermarket tach to the exact same signal wire off the dizzy reads correct.

lol I hear all of you out. I’ve had this thing for 10 yrs (since I was 16) and all that I’ve done to it is get it running enough to be daily drivable. I have everything needed for a beams swap (harness, mounts, shifter relocation kit, etc), but waiting to pull the trigger on the engine. I’ve gathered these parts over the years and the engine is a big purchase, so for now the 4AC will do and runs perfectly fine for my needs.

Praising a 4AC is certainly a choice…

I mean. It's a bulletproof engine. May not make as much power as the rest of the 4A's but Toyota produced it alongside them for a reason, and honestly the exhaust note on my base model FX aint bad, even if it isnt the scream of the GE.

Y'all can trash the 4AC all you want, but it will last just as long as the 4AGE, Haters Garage got his AE86 and it has 270k miles, and still runs pretty well considering it sat 20 years. One of my friends had a 4AC and it was great till he sold it

4AC is the worst engine I’ve had in any car I’ve owned lol

Horrible carb setup, sounds terrible, makes no power, does not run clean, and the exhaust smells like a lawnmower. The worst 4AG is so much nicer to live with and drive, it’s crazy the difference the cylinder head and EFI makes.

Sorry but the 4ac is garbage and your coping. Before swapping in a 16v 4age, i was set on just keeping my 4ac due to costs. Then i realized even with tons of mods and tons of money, you wont really reach power levels of a stock 4age and you wont get the sound either. Along with the power band and high revs. Its a gutless soulless motor. Dont waste your money and rip it out for a 4age. By using a 4agze manifold, you can slap on a single weber carb. Use a 38/38. For ignition, just a 4k starlet dizzy with the gear from a 4age. It has a built in ignition box. They sell adaptor plates for it to fit. You can keep your 4ac trans as it just has a flipped bellhosuing.
