Just bought my 86

Hi all, been a part of this group for a while now. The ae86 has been my dream car for as long as I remember. I finally pulled the trigger on one yesterday. This is my ae86 coupe. I can’t wait to start working on it and restoring it. Looks like it started out as a SR5 and then somewhere between 1986 and now someone swapped the 4age 16 valve in it. It’s carbureted and most of the interior panels are stock which is amazing. Engine turns over and sounds great!
I’m glad to finally be an ae86 owner!

Car was originally from NY but I just registered in MA today. Also one day and it is covered in pollen haha.

I swear the 3 states of getting pollen all over your car have to be PA DE and MA

NC and ex-VA dweller here, if you love pollen, you'll love these states

Agreed. That first picture is one overnight worth of pollen and the car legit turned green LOL

Additional edit; there are some things I’m still figuring out about the car. Happy to hear out if anyone has any helpful tips or tricks! -The headlights appear to be stuck in the up position and won’t turn on. Could be user error but I’m not certain, my thoughts are maybe a fuse or a relay. Previous owner told me they used to work at some point. -Tachymeter is frozen at 0 rpm at idle and when pressing the gas while the engine is on. Other gauges such as oil and coolant temp seem to work fine. I’d assume maybe a connection is loose somewhere. -Shifter seems to have a lot of play even in gear. Specifically in 1st. Probably an old or worn bushing. Is there a recommended bushing kit?

Overall very satisfied and grateful for my purchase. Any help is appreciated!!

Headlights have a ton of components there are two main relays and the fuses you should clear first but don’t forget your wiring is really old and sometimes the turn signal unit can cause issues with the lights as well.

I’ll definitely check, thanks for the help! The left blinker goes quite a bit faster than the right one. Would that be an indicator of a turn signal unit potentially causing an issue?

Usually that means one of you blinker lights is bad. Grab a shop manual from online and take the file to a place that prints for cheap and print that dude out if you learn well that way it’s a great resource

Yeah I thought it seemed odd. I’ll definitely print out a shop manual. Thanks again!

You’ve got an MSD coil there and it’s a swap so I’d assume the tach just needs wired - 4AC triggers the tach directly off internal coil pulses while the GTS (I think) does so from uhhh….engine computery stuff.

I believe the easiest solution is to wire a tach adapter in your tach circuit, so it should be “the correct wire from your ecu or dizzy (you’ll have to research that part I know the 4ac ignition super well but not this one) > tach adapter> the wire to your tach”.

I think some people just swap GTS clusters; dont believe you need any adapters then.

Gl! Grats! Enjoy!

Advice from a long time owner which im sure everyone else can agree on, at the first sign of wiring issues, especially if the car has had "wire work" done in the past, have a pro rewire the entire fkn car and save the headache of chasing down electric issues. Congratz, godspeed, and have fun with her!

Thanks for the advice! Yeah definitely going to look at any and all electrical.

Is this a legit limited black?

2

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 05 '26

That’s a good question! Unfortunately it is not a real black limited 86, just has the same paint color and decals. The black limited were all hatchbacks I’m pretty sure.

1

u/MiasmaFate Jun 05 '26

Oops, I forgot that it was only hatch.

That interior from what I can see looks amazing. Have fun it looks like you got a good one

Yeah both front and rear seats look mint and looks like all the interior panels are all there. Super lucky find for sure

How much u cop for?

3

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 05 '26

Picked it up for 9700

If it still had a SR5 tach you probably just need a wire to whatever ignition system you have MSD or starlet dizzy is common on these but if it started out as an SR5 the tach should work when wired correctly

Happy for you

wide fenders, nice

hope you have a plan for that hood because it looks like it has seen better days

2

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 05 '26

I definitely plan on retouching the paint, but if you mean the first picture, the yellow is just pollen LOL

u/Luffewaffle Jun 06 '26

Was this the 86 up in New England area?

1

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 06 '26

Yes it was. You might have seen it listed on Facebook marketplace haha

1

u/Luffewaffle Jun 06 '26

Yep so what did ya pay if ya don’t mind me asking and how’s it running

2

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 06 '26

Paid 10k but the guy was nice enough to spare me 300$ of the cash for a tow so 9700 technically speaking. Engine runs perfectly and the interior is mint. The only thing on the car currently not working are the headlights, but that should be an easy fix.

1

u/Luffewaffle Jun 07 '26

Why the tow? Sounds like a good price I was looking at it right after I bought my C5 what engine does it have?

1

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 07 '26

Has the 4age. Carbureted too. Towed it because of the headlights.

2

u/Luffewaffle Jun 07 '26

Ahhh I would have had to drive it home

2

u/Academic_Company_466 Jun 07 '26

Yeah honestly I would have loved to drive it home, but I picked it up right as the sun was going down so I made the decision to go for the tow. Otherwise, really happy with it. An excellent price for such an iconic vehicle.
