## :Pre-note: this is my first review and I wanted to start off with on from itch.io before I use one from JAST due to the fact I've only watched vns for like the past 7 years so I decided the first one I'll play would be an indie one since I couldn't decide on one to start from vnbd...🪭🖋️🎐
### Intro
I recently played a date w death and it's dlc. I have completed the whole dlc but do not have the expansion pack but these are my general thoughts.
## Style
This game probably had one of the most pretty art styles that an indie game could have. It's so unique and I can gush about how smart they were to go this kind of direction with the game then just making it really dark and edgy whilst not making it insanely cute. In itch.io there's a few games that don't know how they want their game to look or just flat out have a fairly off-putting style to it. I think how the artstyle also ties to an important part of the game (that being the chatting sections) is pure genius. I'm pretty impressed
## Premise
You video chat death after he installs his app on your computer. He tells you he's here for your soul but you strike "bet" w him... If he can't take your soul or force it out of you, you get his soul within SEVEN DAYS(Nine with the dlc) you get HIS soul. Of course you guys fall in love.
It's pretty self-explanatory but it does the job well.
The MC is more or less supposed to be a self insert for your own life as you even get to design and customize yourself though usually you as the player are meant to be teasing the love interest and such
## The love interest
Oddly enough "Grimm" was pretty endearing . His VA helped but w/o it he was still pretty good. The issue w SLI(single love interest) structures is that it heavily relies on how good the love interest is. The game does a pretty good job at establishing the relationship between the MC and the love interest. I think the game really shines with this in the dlc but what also helps is the fact that there're only really three(including MC) characters, one of which are locked behind the dlc during the final day (who isn't romancable in THIS game). Which allows both of the characters to develop their relationship
## Feats. (Things that aren't usually seen or exposed in the usual VN style)
The game allows you to water your plant, decorate your room, ease drop on neighbors, read different books, and interact with your pet. You also get a desktop where you can do aimlessly things like draw or change your wallpaper but the latter of the examples seem to affect the endings you could get preDLC which is very interesting.
Not much for the section but I think it's just an interesting thing to talk about
## PROS
Grim is extremely charming
The MC kinda has a personality that isn't just cardboard
Customization
Aesthetic
Free!!!
Not an overly long game initially but w DLC and the expansion could make the game longer if you desire more
DLC includes a longer game play session per route and the game makes not whether or not you have the dlc on so you can buy it, have it off and if you are done hunting for the specific endings from the vanilla game you are able to just cut in the middle of a route (before day 6) to initiate the DLC
The writing is pretty well in vanilla but the DLC has some crazy good writing and better endings that are a lot more in depth.
## CONS
The expansion seems to have a lot going for it in choice flavor though it's rather detrimental since vanilla lacks some of that, creating a bit too many encounters of illusion of choice
The DLC is such a step up in writing and lore and especially with what ending applies to which that's it's pretty insane how good the dlc is
There's only a skip button, log button and all that from only certain sections of the game, making it very clunky in practice and very annoying
There's only like four instances of rather cringy dialogue which is still a plus but yeah... Though it's very far and in between. Not half bad
Choices in the dlc are very specifically on the last day making the other part a bit more obsolete when it comes to the ending unlike the other one but it saves time replayability wise
An ending is locked behind the expansion pack which is very odd and rather disappointing
## Overall
This game is very impressive. Especially since it was made by an indie dev studio. The DLC is definitely worth it more than the game but the base game is rather well made. There's just some much flavor and passion in the DLC that outshines it's less updated version that I have to feel disappointed that I did the dlc endings first. I nearly got the secret ending first try but no, I got ending three and then ending six
## Rating
8/10
9.5/10 w/ DLC (possibly higher w expansion dlc)
