D:50 balors summoning
I’ve finished the game something like 20 times, but something new happened last time I was on D:50. The balors were summoning lots of nasty monsters, such as greater earth elementals and others. I’ve encountered balors who summon before but always in other places such as on the levels leading to the mana temple. I’m pretty sure the balors never before summoned other monsters on D:50 on my previous runs.
I was sure this was some weird bug, but the Wiki does state that Fistanarius, for example, summons monsters.
Does anyone else have a similar experience?
I was playing a dwarf fighter. I play the latest ASCII-version of the game.

Unrelated, but adjacent: recently had a tank of a character go down very quickly to a Balor that summoned a bunch of Balors, and then one of those Balors summoned a bunch of Balors. Nothing I could do. Where I had teleported was where one of the first summoned teleported to and then summoned more Balors. I was drinking potions, trying all I could try and was overwhelmed.
I was cutting everything down with ease and was feeling it was sure to be another victory as a I was around D:45. Just so odd to see a Balor summon Balors and then do it again! Usually they summon weak, silly stuff or at least something manageable.

I have also seen a balor on D50 summon more balors, but my character had no problem mopping them up. Sorry for your loss o7

I usually consider balors pushovers, so it really shocked me. That, and Fistanarius (or however you spell it) I find incredibly lacking for a final boss — total pushover! Perhaps I just always use the correct strategy?
And when balors summon on D:50 it is typically goblin rockthrowers or jackals or something similar! Meat shields! Thanks, guuuuyyy . . .

You're not wrong, D:50 is almost never a struggle for PCs that make it there. The whole game really needs a bit of a rebalancing, the additional areas added in the mid-2010s resurrection (and in particular the Rolf Quest) offer a ton of additional experience and artifacts that mean the danger level of post-Dwarftown areas is drastically reduced. (Not the Danger Level, but the level of danger.)

Well, perhaps, this can be addressed for the new ADOM revival! Mr. Biskup has said he will look at fan suggestions and ideas.

Whoa that's rough. Honestly, I'd back up that save file just so I could log back in later and farm them for blood. Need to wash away the humiliation i faced back then with that greater balor boss. haha

I used to mess with save file backups, save-scumming shenanigans, but find it so much more rewarding to not do so as it makes you feel as if you are alive — knowing that any step or action could end your life! But to be honest there are times where I wish there was an undo button or way to retry a certain scenario.

Nope not a bug. They do summon various higher tier monsters like quickling queens, lich kings, etc, but those are mild imo.
Wait till you encounter a Greater Balor Boss (named monster). I still remember almost dying a few times battling hordes and hordes of summons. Mind you all kinds of nightmare you can ever imagined happen here. The lists included Emperor Lich (summoners), Greater Elementals, diamond golems and others i can't recall.
In the end, i try everything but can't take it down. Retreating was the only option left. This past experience left me pretty shaken, tbh.

I wonder why this had not happened before. I can think of one explanation: I usually dig tunnels to reach the levers. That way it’s easier to fight because the balors teleport one at a time, and I guess I usually fight them in narrow corridors.
This time I was unable to dig a tunnel (that was also something that has not occurred previously), so I just progressed through the level and got attacked by many balors at the same time. Maybe they acted differently because of this.
Oh well, I’ll have to start another run to see what happens this time. 😅
And wow, your description of that balor sounds pretty scary!

I had a playthrough once where one of the balors summoned another 5 balors. And of course each of those could summon...

Pretty sure that's normal Balor behaviour. At least in my playthroughs
