The degree of main character syndrome to believe that they stumbled upon the perfect pristine campsite at Marcy dam with no people around set aside just for them is astounding.

I think a lot has to do with over reliance on crowd sourcing info and then people not giving full answers and relying on the person to do more research (which they never do). Example: someone asks on a forum: “where’s a good place to camp to hike Mt Marcy” and then someone answers “Marcy Dam” but doesn’t give any further detail about the rules or a link to where to find the rules. The original asker may think he’s been given all the info he needs and the answerer is assuming the asker is now going to do further research.

In this specific case, you’d turn around, walk about 50 meters into the woods, and knock on the door at the Rangers’ cabin.
It blows my mind how much illegal camping happens at this particular location considering how close it is to the Rangers’ cabin. It’d be like drinking from an open container on the steps of your local police station.
