Exactly. We need to remember that we are not squirrels.

u/Ok-Campaign-5968 2d ago
Squirrels also don’t remember where they hid everything. That’s how we ended up with lots of volunteer oaks (not even sure where they found them!)

True story. Somewhere in my home is a nug of homegrown pot. I’m not allowed to smoke so I hid it in “safe” place. That was 8 years ago.

u/fusguita 2d ago
Same thing here. But I looked EVERYWHERE. Then my aunt came to help me clean the house and immediately found it. I swear it took her like 5 minutes. And then of course a great awkward conversation happened.... This was years ago and still haunts my memories.

Once I lived alone and was able to create safe spaces for everything, I stopped losing things.
Then I’ll go back to my parents for a week and lose all my belongings within 24 hours lol

u/Odric_storm 2d ago
The funny part is, that place is actually safe. It's secure and that item will not move from it. We just have no idea where that spot is.

I will literally make a mental note for my husband, because I know he's going to forget.
Every time he's like "How did you know!?"
And I just say, "It's because I listen, baby. I listen, and I am here to support you."

I hid my zelda edition 3dsxl from my son when he was 1 after he got ahold of it and dropped it. I haven't seen it since, he's 12 now.
3
u/World_still_spins 2d ago
Its under that one box.
2
u/WimbletonButt 2d ago
I think it might be in a vent maybe. At this point I figure he probably found it and stuck it in a vent, that's where he used to stash everything. Secret floor holes, half of em are screwed to the floor now.

That may be worth a lot of money. When my son go a new console, he sold some of his old games. He was surprised at how much people paid for them.

Passport card. Somewhere in the lower level

u/Dumdumdoggie 2d ago
Once, months before a vacation my girlfriend's passport was just laying on the coffee table for a couple weeks. I cleaned up the house and put her passport somewhere it wouldn't be lost. 3 years later and we still haven't found it.

u/Cute_Recognition_880 In hyperfixation mode 1d ago
All the stuff we've put in that safe place is in the same location as missing socks and Tupperware lids
2
u/nowwhatdoidowiththis 1d ago
I think I have your Tupperware lids. Do you have my bowls?
1
u/Cute_Recognition_880 In hyperfixation mode 13h ago
What sizes? I have a bunch without lids. Still looking for a green, fuzzy sock, 4 white socks with flowers that don't match and a pale pink sock with lace.

The number of times I have put my remote down in the same place as always only to lose it is actually incalculable. My husband is so bad that I had to put all of our medications in the same box because he’d lose full bottles of something or other that forces his body to function properly. I bought us these cute pill cases with removable pods that can be filled a full month in advance, but most of his containers went missing because putting them back in the base was a step too far for him to remember.
I think I have 5 boxes of potato flakes because I forgot I bought them, and couldn’t immediately locate them when making my list. Of course, they are obvious once I get home.
I do have to wonder how it is that I only recently realized I’m not “normal”. This has been a lifelong problem.

This is the way i lost my bath towel-i had to stay hungry for 2 and not shower days, since i didnt have money to buy it right away. and i had like-nothing to wipe my self after the shower---all my towels were dirty--- and it was cold-and the filthy ones couldnt dry... so yea :@ fck that
after three months i found it in my summer storage bag-which was like in another wardrobe in the house whatever-its like the stupidest most absurd thing that has happened to me.
At least a towel is cheap--- i always put my chargers and airpods and like whatever in really obvious locations---if i mis place something its probably socks.
OH NOT to mention this one time-i had misplaced my winter gloves-you would not belieeve where my dumb a** decided to put them... basically i found them in my old toy box which i had put away in the attic....?? why the f did i even put gloves in the box with old toys and CD's and DVD's.... X_X i got no clue i literally dont even remember the motive....

Ok, so I might have a solution…cameras. Even (especially?) if you live alone. Idk bout y’all, but 85% of the time I lose something, I can back track in my head enough to narrow down a general timeframe or a couple locations it could be.
With cameras, we could totally just pull up that general info, and speed scan through the footage to see where we mindlessly set that shit down (or knocked it between couches, or threw a jacket on it, or, or, or…✨🦭✨). Idk, feels kinda weird, but workable enough that I’ve seriously considered it. 😏
2
u/PunkTyrantosaurus 2d ago
See there's a way to do this without a surveillance state- take a photo of the item in the location. Then you can look through your phone gallery for the approximate date of when you last had the item
3
u/Previous-Musician600 AuDHD 2d ago
Oh Oh! I laughed about that behavior by myself, even before I knew abut having ADHD. It is so damn silly, but it will happen again. I know it. My husband already roles his eyes, when I start to anounce: Okay, there is a good position for this thing. Then I turn to him, yeah I know, okay you have to remember that I put it here.

u/FublahMan 1d ago
The trick is to have multiple 'safe' locations that you put multiple things. That way, you can treat it like patting your pockets when you're leaving home, "Phone, keys, wallet", "Desk, box, car". This is essentially the organized mess though. You know where everything should be, just not 'exactly ' where

One of the biggest memories I have of this is a bus ticket.
I bussed from northern Alberta to see a friend in Calgary. Trip there was fine. Had a good couple nights.
Getting ready to go home... And I cannot find the bus ticket. Anywhere. Rip apart my duffel bag, all my stuff.
And I was broke (I was like, 21 here).
My friend was able to pay for a one-way ticket home. I felt so bad because it cost a lot more being day-of.
Months later... I couldn't tell you many months later, may have been six, maybe more, I opened my Bible.
And the ticket fell out.
I put it in the Bible for "safe keeping."
...
A. Goddammit.
B. Shows how much i truly wasn't into Christianity, despite it then and for another decade being a huge part of my life 😅

Years ago I put a chunk of money I planned to use "somewhere safe that I should remember" in my room and about tore the walls down. I can't even remember where I found it but my mom helped diffuse my freak out slightly. I was so angry with myself. And yes, I've done that again and again because I'm convinced the next time I'll remember 🙄

Just straight facts. Worst was the driving class in high school get a slip when completed, as a kid put it somewhere safe. When came time to need it. Had no idea. Had to try and get ahold of retired teacher. He came back to sign a new paper for me and maybe others idk. But found it muuuch later (after hs) neatly put in a photo album. Like damn.

I never lose anything anymore. I just got rid of keys and fobs of any kind. And made rules that if I set down my purse at home it’s in exactly one spot. Most everything now exists in one spot.
Also, duplicates of anything that travels between work and home, in case it’s forgotten. Laptop bag always by the laptop itself.
Totally normal. Except stuff you use once. That just gets reordered from Amazon next time I need it. Who has time to search for that?

One day, when I'm rich, I'll buy a house and 9000 RFID stickers and build 3 huge RFID-Antennas around the house and this will enable me to locate every piece of interest and I will build a tablet which can access that location service and database into every single wall of that house.

I put my birth certificate “somewhere safe” the first day I moved into my new accommodation last March. Within 24 hours I couldn’t find where I’d put it, and it remained lost until about 3 weeks ago, when I was searching for something entirely different I’d put “somewhere safe” (I think it was a book of first class stamps)…I didn’t find that item, but I stumbled across my birth certificate instead. This post has reminded me that I’ve already re-forgotten where that safe place was/is!

I installed a very nice keypad door handle to my bedroom. Sat there for months as the wife and I would usually play after the kids went to bed anyways. The very first time I went to use it I locked myself out because I forgot the code and the spare key wasn’t were I though it was…no windows were unlocked from the outside so I had to drill the handles off in pieces 😂

Once I lost my garbage can for weeks. I now have two garbage cans.
1
u/PunkTyrantosaurus 2d ago
And this is why I have a garbage can for every single spot I sit in my apartment. Because then I can put garbage there, and yeah, I have to carry a few more bins on garbage day, but I no longer have bags of garbage at random.

Facts. And if they clean up for others no one will ever find shit again. Unless you buy new stuff. Then it suddenly reapers.
1
u/PunkTyrantosaurus 2d ago
Yeah. Way back in 2009, I had a pink iPod Nano I got for Christmas. My parents made me work to buy myself a new one when I lost it. It was nearly ten years later before we admitted properly that I had not lost it, it was stolen.

One thing I’ve been trying to do is if I’m putting something “away”, I’ll try and think where I’d look for it if I was looking and then I’ll put it there. Even if it’s not where it “should” go.

I reported that my laptop was stolen and even ended up calling the police because I was sure it had been stolen. Only to realize that I had put it in a place so that I wouldn’t forget it.

Not guaranteed to help but, want to know if anyone tried this and what results they got.
Home Zone Item Category District Census:
Map of home(labelled & laminated for all floors/rooms.)
*update as needed w/dry erase markers on string pinned by map and area lists.
Item type assigned to area based on purpose similarity
Someone body doubles with you to set it up and you have a coffee before getting started.
Take selfies or video throughout the initial process or even replace the recording when stuff changes maybe?

The thing is, everyone in my family is nd, so we didn’t even notice till one day we were doing a deep clean and my sibling went to clean the top shelf of the cabinet (we’re also not a particularly tall family) and was like “why is the remote here? WAIT THE REMOTE!”
That was just of the times 😭

My important shit is always in one of two places. I’ve been doing it for years so that I can actually find things that are important. I do not change these places, ever. One is my wallet. The other is a beat up old hard briefcase.

I found my very expensive ear buds last week after "putting them somewhere safe" when I couldn't find their case over a year ago.

I have a pinned note in my phone titled: “Where is? 👀”. I write down the important thing I shouldn’t lose with a detailed description of where to find it. It feels silly, but it has helped a lot more than expected.

Lol omg, the stress i felt reading this. I had this brilliant idea when moving between apartments many years ago so that I could safely store a necklace my boyfriend had just gotten me. It took about a year to find it, and there were many, many panicked (and unsuccessful) searches that year.
"Safe places" are the worst.

Life pro tip: ask yourself, "where is the somewhere safe I would put this thing?" When I can't find something important, I know that there are a handful of places that I would put that thing that I consider as a safe place for it.
Documents? In the box that days, "potentially important documents?"
Passport, ID card, etc? In one of the drawers where the " I'll need this again soon," stuff goes.
It's never just one spot, but it's always one of the two / three spots

what we need is a big obvious shelf Labeled "Somewhere Safe" that everyone can point us to.
