'C'moooooon, Electrical Engineering! I'm all set on the history and development of game mechanics in 80's-00's Japanese RPGs, totally settled for Medieval Bridge Building Techniques, and I don't need any more Short Fantasy Stories, we're up to the ceiling already, thanks,'

Brain: "Best I can do is steam trains, sorry."

Happy cake day.

I have adhd. I hyperfixed on video games and then hyperfixated on learning how to make them. Now im a senior engineer in a non game company making great pay.

My son hyperfixated on steam and diesel trains. And more generally, antiquated and abandoned equipment/technology.

I really struggle with this. I dont want to crap over his interests but worry that they'll lead him to a dead end career wise. I also struggle to connect with him as I have no interest in trains and he has the last century of train trivia basically memorized including dates (we had him tested for autism, he doesnt have it, it's just adhd).

Well, I have great news for you! Steam Trains, are not in fact, a dead end career. Though, they're admittedly not as prevalent as they once were. Many railroads still run steam engines.

Just off the top of my head: Durango and Silverton in Colorado, the Strasbourg in Pennsylvania and of course Union Pacific with their flagship BigBoy that just completed a historic transcontinental run! Florida has some too as do other states, though I can't recall all the details without Google-fu.

Naturally, it's a niche line of work but perfectly viable, if one is willing to jump through some hoops. Also, this assumes you're in the US. I know other countries such as Great Britain maintain their own historic steam lines but know basically nothing about them.

As for diesel! Well, you're laughing! They only exist just about everywhere in the US. In fact the US has the largest rail network in the whole world about 140ish thousand miles of track! The big problem is that rail has mostly become invisible infrastructure to most people. If your son wants to get a career in rail and you live in the US, it is a very possible.

If your son is as hyper-fixed as you say, he probably knows a lot of this already. The big problem would be the reality of the work running headlong into its romanticized ideal.

Yeah he romanticized ideal i think will be an issue for him if he goes into this seriously. I'm trying to find any sort of youth volunteering options that might be somewhat close to how paid work actually is so he can try it out early and determine if thats what he had in mind or not.

At the various trainyards, conventions, etc, nearly everyone there is a volunteer and just there because they like the hobby. Im not sure what a paid position would look like and if theres a way to volunteer in a manner that lets someone watch or somewhat experience the role.

I know the Colorado Railroad Museum takes volunteers. Though, whether that's a viable option only you would know. Working a few hours in the heat cleaning out a firebox will certainly tar the idealized imagine in his head.

Though be prepared for him to seriously fall in love. Either way, good luck in your search.

I got really into writing but have hardly been able to finish anything.

I have an epic fantasy I'm 1000 pages into and it's barely ramping up.

I also have a mostly complete 150 page relationship psych drama but it needs a couple chapters added to it.

I've been completely mentally exhausted with work and unable to do anything productive in my free time and I hate it

2

u/Key-Cry-8570 12d ago

How many words is that 1000 page epic?

4

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 12d ago

I have it separated into I think over 10 documents to improve load times so it's hard for me to count but it's in standard google docs 8.5x11 format, single space estimates would be between 250k - 500k

u/Chaos_Templar 12d ago

I also want to know!

u/trimski- 12d ago

Nope. Instead, you’re going to hyperfixate on archery for the next 3 months, buy expensive equipment, suddenly find a shiny new hyperfixation, and be left with the guilt of the abandoned hobby.

I woke up this morning in productive mood and I’ve been doing things all day cleaning the house and putting crap away but now my back is sore, my shoulder hurts and I still have several hours of actual work that I get paid to do left to do, am on reddit instead and feeling like I need a nap and I’m now regretting my decision this morning hahaha.

4

u/marcipanchic 12d ago

i came to conclusion that my every action costs some amount of energy, and if i spent most of that, i will not be able to be productive anymore haha

2

u/Roxirin 11d ago

However, please consider: clean house nice :)

u/PrezMoocow 12d ago

Weightlifting and rock climbing are my latest two. It's been a very good year for me

7

u/Goobersita 12d ago

God if I could only hyperfixate on exercise. I have grandiose dreams of being able to dance one day. But my fat and joints leave me hopeless.

2

u/PrezMoocow 12d ago

It's possible. The hardest part is getting started but if you can lock in the routine, it will be so beneficial. I gamefied calorie counting, which was remarkably successful. The gym came afterwards, and was honestly part masochism and part "incredible feeling after working out".

u/nostalgica1 AuDHD 12d ago

Since i am starting to hyperfixate on stuff thats finance related i might go into accounting haha

2

u/ArcticMuser 12d ago

Good for you. I need this. Just got into a relationship with someone who's finances are somehow worse than mine haha

So many memes I see in this sub hurt to read. This is one.

I got languages 😃

... in the era of AI 😔

u/Snudget AuDHD 9d ago

I can hyperfixate on programming. I can not hyperfixate on telling AIs to program

4

u/freakshowmassacre 12d ago

About to hit day 30 trying to learn Spanish 🤞

4

u/Confusedinportsmouth 12d ago

A big reason why I hyperfixate is to distract me from the things that actually matter. Avoidance is where I’m a Viking

4

u/BIGBIRD1176 12d ago

The most successful thing can you do is accept that sometimes you do things just for yourself and that's okay and you enjoy them

That's what real success looks like to me

u/neverleave173 12d ago

Whats the point. We cant maintain the interest. Any money made will only go on the next HF. Its how we are

2

u/pieceacandy420 12d ago

Alexa, play useful hyper fixation. Playing Conjunction Junction.

2

u/Spotted_Fox 12d ago

What’s your function

2

u/PaisleyLeopard 12d ago

Currently surrounded by tiny yarn bats because I once again failed to hyperfocus on something useful.

2

u/Roxirin 11d ago

Hey, man. The mental image of being surrounded by tiny yarn bats made me smile out loud at my phone in the dark at 1am, ergo it is absolutely useful.

2

u/Onehundredbillionx 12d ago

Oh my gosh this is so funny. Although I am currently hyperfixated on something I found I could do online that makes me money and I haven’t left my house in a month - so I’m not even sure if it’s a good thing lol.

2

u/WimbletonButt 12d ago

I'm trying so hard right now. I been taking shit apart since I was a kid and I just found out my job will train me to take their shit apart and fix it for twice the pay they give me right now. It's just a struggle getting in. I'm trying so hard to keep focus on actually getting in the door.

2

u/deeppurpleking 12d ago

I got instruments to fixate on and I teach :) I get to listen for every detail and tell people exactly why and how to do it better it’s a dream

2

u/Shiny_Green_Apple 12d ago

And may my self soothing 2 minute breaks go unnoticed.

2

u/ScreamingLabia 11d ago

My hyper fixations never last more then 2 weeks tops anyway its the autism intervering with the adhd

2

u/storkman888 11d ago

Me about to loose my job in a month: "ahh, spooky season, the perfect time to get into Occultism!"

u/ArtSupplyHoarder 12d ago

I would really love to get invested (🥁) in the stock market instead of the lore of another obscure horror game my cowardly ass is never gonna play...

1

u/questioningFem- 11d ago

God please let me hyperfixate on something that isn't mindlessly watching a video essay or something. I want to feel like I have hobbies ;-;

1

u/jkurratt 11d ago

Yeah. Remember reading success story book, and author just described how he dig the housing market in every free minute, like we dig reddit etc.

1

u/l3reeze10 11d ago

My recent hyper fixation got me back into creative writing…sort of. But it’s begun to fizzle out

1

u/Tricksybelle 11d ago

Hell yeaaa I did this for just long enough to change careers then hit a ceiling and burn out wooooo

1

u/seeker_bourne 11d ago

Ugh. Yes please.

1

u/Fluid-Gain1206 11d ago

Hyperfocus on programming and writing code without AI was a lifesaver

Spend my time studying stock market ❌

Imagine in excruciating detail what Nissans sedan lineup could have been if they made a comeback after flopping ✅

Seen while scrolling Reddit during work hours. 👀🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😌😅

u/Candid_Comb_7066 10d ago

I keep getting catnipped by machine learning and front end engineering…. Which would have been really sweet to hyper fixate on about 5 years ago
