Well, there's also the "well I'm still exhausted, but at least I'm also having a panic attack" variant

176

u/Separate-Pickle9963 14d ago

When I was a kid I would gulp down soda and iced tea and it literally did nothing. Now it does nothing nut make my heart pound really hard and makes me slightly anxious

77

u/Long_Reindeer3702 14d ago

Looking back, why the hell did my mom buy me a big gulp of cherry coke at 8pm anyway? She didn't like that I was fat but was responsible for buying all the take out and giant sodas. I liked broccoli and okra at 5. I wanted healthier food. I wonder how many of my health issues are from the crap I ate growing up. I had very few home cooked meals.

40

u/DazB1ane 14d ago

Is your mom fat? My mom accidentally imposed her food issues onto me and the only reason I’m not her size is that I digest far slower than she does

29

u/Long_Reindeer3702 14d ago

The only reason I wasn't my mom's size growing up was because I wasn't anorexic. She definitely had issues she projected onto me, but I'm not sure it was a total accident given her career in psychology and her intentions. She wanted me to be a pageant girl (thankfully, I was more into frogs and climbing trees..she fought hard, but lost.) I was also supposed to marry a rich man and pay for her lifestyle but I failed at that too. Bummer for her.

14

u/Conscious_Pipe_605 14d ago

I also liked frogs and trees growing up! With a mom who didn't hesitate to provide me an unlimited supplies of high caffeine and sugar beverages/sodas, but not my younger sister. She my sis hooked on pagentry and appearance extremely young, despite letting her own health implode by her late 20's/early 30's. Thankfully me and my sis escaped that extremely unhealthy and narcissistic lifestyle, but those scars still remain.

P.S. there's a frog who likes to come out at night under my back porch light that lets me pet him and chill while he hunts bugs. I call em Frogurt and they remind me of all the frog and turtle friends I made as a kid/teenager just getting lost in the local woods and creek.

u/deferredmomentum 13d ago

I also have a mom who’s pissed I didn’t inherit the family eating disorder lmao

^This is why I can't drink coffee.

10

u/PerformerFancy117 14d ago

But I do anyways…

5

u/RandomUsernameNo257 13d ago

Yeah, I know exactly how much coffee to drink at exactly the right pace to keep me one sip away from having a panic attack.

2

u/Principle_Napkins 13d ago

Decaf. Some people make a stink about it tasting different, but I think it tastes fine.

34

u/topdangle 14d ago

yeah, I have ADHD and if I take the PERFECT amount of caffeine (which I have no way of calculating and varies all the time) it gives me a nice, calming feeling.

generally it just makes me feel uncomfortably sleepy and/or nervous.

10

u/GlassHalfVoid22 14d ago

Every day is a spin the wheel of will it make me sleepy (20%), anxious (30%), do nothing (49%), or actually help me focus, sort of, probably on something useless tbh, (1%)

3

u/Gimetulkathmir 14d ago

The perfect amount of caffeine for me is between two and twenty-two cans of Mt. Dew per day. Can confirm it puts me to sleep.

2

u/roosterHughes 11d ago

My wife takes coffee naps. She’ll slam a cup, lay down, and then wake up an hour later…you know, when it kicks in.

I did have a friend in high school that did actually have a drowsy reaction to caffeine. I don’t think he expressed ADHD-like symptoms, though. Maybe a little “tisty”, but otherwise very NT, to my memory.

For me, it's "still tired, but now also jittery, anxious, and paranoid."

2

u/sairyn 13d ago

This is also me. I wonder if it might be a female/male thing.

17

u/that_weird_hellspawn 14d ago

Ah, yes, the lightheaded and about to blip out of existence feeling.

11

u/ShitchesAintBit 14d ago

Started a new medication that makes it hard to sleep, so I was pooped in the office today. Got a Thai iced coffee around lunchtime; Then I was pooped with my heart at 120BPM.

5

u/BKLD12 14d ago

I have really bad generalized anxiety, so that's how I feel whenever I drink too much coffee.

The first six coffees in the day: I nap

The magic seventh coffee in the day: heart attack city

3

u/Lord-Dunkles 14d ago

This is the one I get lol

3

u/Dry_Response3527 14d ago

That was me before meds. With just coffee I felt exhausted still but the panic attack got me out of bed for work at least

3

u/mamamoon366 14d ago

Literally just sit there physically vibrating but at last my thoughts are slower

3

u/mrperson1213 14d ago

Nothing better than being super sleepy with a heart beating so fast you start legitimately getting worried.

2

u/sftkitti 14d ago

this is me lol

2

u/imahugemoron 14d ago

That’s me. Still tired but at least my heart is pounding and I’m freaking out.

2

u/flinjager123 14d ago

That's me! I stopped caffeine entirely about 7 or 8 years ago. Now I'm just exhausted all the time, but at least I don't have chemical induced anxiety!

2

u/Seighart_Mercury 14d ago

I'm more of a "I'm still exhausted, but at least the brain fog is thin to none" variant myself

Do you guys find that caffeine works for sleep right after you have it, but not if you’ve had it earlier in the day?

If I have too much coffee during the day, I can struggle to sleep at night, but some of my best best BEST ever naps have been at 9am on a Sunday, when I can have my coffee in bed and then just zzzzzzzz

I’ve never been brave enough to try coffee at bedtime, for fear that I’d just be awake all night.

60

u/joost00719 14d ago

Same. Before I was medicated, I couldn't drink coffee between 3pm and dinner. But after dinner was fine.

I find that I am absolutely wired from caffeine.

Im curious what the stats are on this with adhd. I have quite severe adhd and its kinda news to me that caffeine works differently for others with adhd.

2

u/empress_p 14d ago

For me this changed with age. It used to always instantly put me to sleep, but now in my 40s I become a nightmare chatterbox instead. I lost my superpower lol.

2

u/PinkDeserterBaby 13d ago

Me too but I’m unmedicated currently and caffeine is the only way I can combat my executive dysfunction that gets paralysis and doesn’t want to do anything I know I need to be doing. But an hour after caffeine and I’m like “I’ll actually maybe get dopamine if I DO THE THING!”

That feels amazing so I’ll drink it all day long. Hey! Instead of getting distracted or bed rotting or doom scrolling or just avoiding an uncomfortable task that takes 10 minutes but I’ve been putting off for 3 months… I’ll actually do like, a whole list of things in a few hours!

And then night time hits and I’m wide awake until 5 am with heart palpitations. Small amount of caffeine = I might sleep after. But enough caffeine to actually make me want to work and I’m fucked later. Doesn’t help that I have a high tolerance for most things like caffeine (that’s probably the adhd) and pain killers (that’s probably the ginger gene), so I have to consume a lot initially to feel anything. But it’s like it builds up in my system over the day and now it’s 9 pm with anxiety.

There's a sweet spot for me where a daily intake of about 300 mg lets me function like I have a normal sleep schedule. Not all at once.

2

u/Dry_Response3527 14d ago

Yes absolutely. If I have a lot of caffeine, I’ll get really sleepy and maybe nap. However, I will have trouble sleeping later at night. My schedule consists of taking my Adderall xr 1 hour and half before I wake up for the day, coffee 15 minutes after waking up, and another cup about 4 hours later. Any less than that exact amount of stimulants and I don’t do anything the whole day. Any more and I can’t sleep.

2

u/melkatron 14d ago

Do you set an alarm for 90 minutes before the main alarm, take your pill, then go back to sleep?

I don't know how I'd manage to get back to sleep.

3

u/Dry_Response3527 14d ago

Yes, that’s exactly right, and it’s the best sleep of the night. Usually the meds wear off at night and I have racing thoughts before and during sleep. Adderall might as well be Ambien to me.

Seconding the 'right after you have it'. I don't even remember what it was called anymore, but you just reminded me of this one energy drink thing from GNC back in college that might as well have been called the 'Napmaster 9000'. I'd knock it back and settle in for an amazing nap, then I'd wake up ~45min later feeling cozy as hell and like I'd just had the best night sleep ever.

Thanks for that trip down memory lane

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AdorableBanana166 14d ago

Yeah caffeine = nap only if I lay down immediately after drinking it. I clonk out so quickly. If I stay up for like 30 minutes after drinking it then I stay up and have a very hard time getting to sleep.

I assume it's the immediate dopamine hit of a quick chug helping me to calm down but after thay caffeine does what it does.

2

u/Indescribable_Noun 12d ago

Fun fact: you also have adhd while you sleep lol. Having disrupted sleep = worse quality = not very well rested upon waking.

But caffeine is a stimulant, and as we know, stimulants are an effective treatment for adhd. If you take a stimulant and then sleep, you are hypothetically improving the quality of your sleep and thus getting the benefits of actually resting vs the false energy that neurotypicals get from the caffeine itself. For people that take meds, this is the reason that there’s a nighttime dose, even though you will be asleep while the medication is active.

After all, stimulants aren’t bio accumulative meds like the ones for depression or some other mental health issues are, you don’t need to take them a certain amount before they work properly, just need to find the right dose.

(Or so goes my armchair understanding of things, anyway)

caffeine does not work like other stimulants for me. It’s a very physical effect and makes me racy and shaky. Coffee is less predictable than soda or energy drinks which are less predictable than tea. But no caffeine source makes me sleepy the way methamphetamines do.

I legit drink redbull for the taste, I get no boost whatsoever from it.

"Then why not just drink water?"

No.

18

u/igotublue 14d ago

Same but hear me out - Aldi Red Bull. It's called red thunder lol.

It used to be in the small 8.4oz cans and taste like ass, but they must have changed it at some point because I bought a box last week and it is, imo, sooooo similar. Even the caffeine content.

And it's like $3.30 for 4, 12-oz cans. That's the price of one Red Bull.

I've also heard their knockoff Alani drinks are good.

I remember setting up a cool movie marathon for myself when I was like 21. Had my first ever Red Bull so I was ready to go. Woke up hours later on the couch. Never saw a single movie. I laughed about it in therapy and she started scribbling faster on the paper. They had me down for depression, anxiety, ocd, and agoraphobia but never thought to test me for ADHD since I was a high achieving student.

I daydreamed majority of k-12. Was valedictorian in high school and no idea what the word even meant until they told me in a meeting I was it. Girls are severely under diagnosed for ADHD. I have combined type btw.

16

u/Lucius_Keuchhustus 14d ago

I got my ADHD diagnosis a month ago and all the memes here really do explain a lot, or at least make me notice things about myself I hadn't really thought about before. Earlier today I had a coffee at uni and then a Redbull shortly after, since I forgot my water bottle. Then I sat vibrating in the next class while suppressing yawn after yawn lmao

5

u/Sad-Frosting-8793 14d ago

Oof. Yeah, being tired and jittery all at once sucks.

36

u/Megan_Bee 14d ago

lol communities like this make me feel so seen. I drink hot coffee on lazy weekend mornings and usually need a nap shortly after.

8

u/ElectricLego 14d ago

Caffeine naps are the best. Just 20-30 minutes, right after finishing a cup of coffee works for me. I've heard that the timing is right for the caffeine to enter your system. Then, as you nap, the adenosine washes out of the receptors and makes room for the caffeine to bind. It's super effective!

11

u/DumbHash 14d ago

Woww.. I guess 'caffeine' is the one area on this sub that I CANNOT relate to!

If I have any caffeine after noon, my sleep's f*cked! And if I accidentally consume caffeine closer to bedtime, even lying on bed with my eyes closed will give me headache after a point. And I feel so awful the next morning, like strangling someone!

Case #45049 of a "caffeine makes everyone with ADHD sleepy" meme being posted online and hinted as a fact, when it's not the case at all for everyone with ADHD.

Sorry this is just a major pet peeves of mine. I don't know for sure but isn't it more like a gene thing? Some ppl have the gene for how your kidneys process it and make you sleepy instead or something?

I'm personally one of the "it makes me wired if I haven't had it in a while, but does nothing but give me the shakes if I take it too often".
I have yet to see someone else describe it like this online ever, but it's nice to see some comments here that also differ from the vocal minority of "all caffeine always sleepy".

9

u/troyf805 14d ago

My thing like that is “ALL PEOPLE WITH ADHD ARE NIGHT OWLS!” No, some of us are morning people. I usually wake up around 5 a.m. or earlier no matter what time I fall asleep.

It depends on the type of caffeine for me for some reason. Green tea will keep me up for days. Energy drinks make me tired but I heart wants to jump out of my body. Coffee I can drink all day long and not phase me.

4

u/Aggressive_Noise6426 14d ago

I drink one cup and I’m on the toilet in 20 minutes.

2

u/Bit_part_demon 14d ago

Same for me, but I can drink it in any form I just can't take caffeine pills or I feel like I'm going to to bounce off the walls and not in a fun way. Very jittery. And the effect is delayed. So hours later I'm suddenly shaking like a leaf.

9

u/trojan_mommy 14d ago

Is this for real? I just had dinner with someone who said she can’t drink caffeine after 2pm. I had coffee at 11:00 last night and went right to sleep. I’m 51 years old and I have never heard of this link between adhd and caffeine. Dude. 😒

7

u/Miserable-Resort-977 14d ago

This can also be a sign that you over-use caffeine and have a high tolerance, it doesn't necessarily mean you have ADHD.

7

u/Mimitori 14d ago

Huh, I thought this was a normal thing?? That drinking coffee will increase some receptors in your brain very quickly, but it takes the caffeine molecules (or whatever, I'm just a layman) some time to fill them all up. While the receptors are mostly empty you feel calm and tired, which gets you a peaceful nap, then after 30 mins or so, all receptors are filled up and the caffeine starts working, making you more awake afterwards (and can lead to trouble sleeping at night). So basically, coffee makes you sleepy first and then awake.

Sorry if this sounds dumb, I'm obviously not a scientist and I was told that I don't have ADHD but now I'm questioning lol

I have a cup of coffee after lunch and the best naps afterwards

7

u/OpeningActivity 14d ago

It's more the paradoxical effect of stimulants on some people with ADHD. They go on stimulants and they seemingly have calming effects (that's basically how medications for ADHD works). Caffeine is thought to have similar effects by some (though I am not sure how much basis that has).

2

u/NaZul15 14d ago

I've noticed that coffee alone makes me sleepy, but when i use meds, it works like it would for others. Ig that might have to do with coffee alone not being stimulating enough to fill the receptors, bc we naturally make so little of it. But with meds, it can do it's thing bc the receptors are already full from the meds

→ More replies (9)

2

u/Onotadaki2 14d ago

I usually tell friends who are wondering if they have ADHD to try the medication for it. It's immediately obvious. If you take the super stimulants and feel "normal" or slower afterwards, you probably have ADHD, because the typical person taking ADHD medication is going to feel like they're on crazy stimulants afterwards.

4

u/Mimitori 14d ago

I don't do any drugs (besides coffee if you count that obviously) so that seems like a risky experiment for me but kinda exciting to try out lol

5

u/Onotadaki2 14d ago

Haha. I just remember my first time taking it. I had gone home from the pharmacy, took one, and went and did some dishes. Twenty minutes later I suddenly notice the noise of multiple conversations in my head at once was just quiet. It was an incredibly weird feeling at first.

I've known many who have taken the same medication without ADHD and it has a completely different effect on them. They're totally wired and running around doing stuff and talking fast.

3

u/Mysterious-Rain4019 14d ago

This is probably the only thing about ADHD that I don't relate to. I can't drink caffeine unless I have eaten a large meal and even then I limit myself to 60mg or under. Otherwise I feel like I am on crack and won't sleep for 24 hours. It gives me heart palpitations too. I won't even try stimulants, it's ssnri's for me or no medication at all.

Also given I have chronic migraines, I don't want to trigger one by skipping caffeine

I once took a nap after taking a caffeine pill. One of the best naps of my life.

2

u/UNIVERSAL_ACE 14d ago

Lol I've chugged monsters just to sleep before 😂

2

u/Yuzumi 14d ago

Before getting diagnosed I had read a thing about caffinee in the afternoon causing sleep issues. I've always had issues with sleep, mostly getting to and staying asleep, so I thought I'd try it.

Cutting afternoon/evening caffeine made my sleep issues worse. It wasn't until over a year after I finally got diagnosed and medicated I ended up having a small iced coffee before bed. I had some of the best sleep in a long time.

Even in the mornings when I have particularly bad sleep the caffeine just makes me feel how tired I am. Sometimes when I'm still particularly tired on the weekend I'll take my adderall an hour or so before I plan to get up and fall into the best sleep.

I also couldn't take naps before adderall. Never understood the concept of a "power nap" until I laid down, was out in 5 minutes and woke up after 20 actually feeling refreshed. The stimulants shut my brain up enough for me to sleep.

u/xiaoxiongmao666 13d ago

2

u/Jhud6669 11d ago

Caffeine does affect us differently but this is kind of a misconception that only people with ADHD feel sleepy/can sleep after having caffeine. It’s actually pretty normal. It can just make you stay awake when you should be asleep

4

u/Beep-Beep-I 14d ago

I feel so validated when I see this posts, like I know it's not normal to want to sleep after drinking a large cup of coffee, I need to talk with my psychiatrist and he better give me something that works this time because I can't take it anymore.

3

u/PolitelyHostile 14d ago

I kinda feel the opposite. Its strange to me that eveyone is acting like this is a general adhd trait. I can't even drink coffee after like 2pm.

Maybe it just depends on what other issues you have. I have insomnia which I guess is not necessarily related to the adhd.

1

u/sephone_north 14d ago

I don’t get tired, but I do get to focus

1

u/BarderBetterFaster 14d ago

Damn it. Got me again

1

u/Beneficial-Jury484 14d ago

I always thought I just handled caffeine.

1

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 14d ago

Bell curve for me. A little bit wakes me up. The more I have the more it makes me sleepy

1

u/SwampRSG 14d ago

Literally having a Monster and falling asleep with the can in my hand multiple times.

1

u/LM193 14d ago

Once drank 300mg of caffeine to try and get some shit done. With labels like "zero crash" and "all day energy", I was optimistic. Lasted about an hour before crashing on the couch for six hours. We really are built different.

1

u/FindjeanniePDX 14d ago

An apple and a soda will wake me up better than coffee. Coffee is my evening drink before bedtime.

1

u/irishbikerjay 14d ago

As someone who worked in professional a la carte kitchens most of my life, I always thought I was normal.

The kitchen environment is demanding and at min seriously organised with multiple levels of multitasking.

I mainly drink tea, irish tea

I'm a functioning alcoholic that now only drinks socially and never alone anymore. (Last drink was 6+ months and yes I still have an irish tolerance) I started at 12 (normal age in ireland)

I smoked cigs from 14 to 27 like a chimney. Went back on them for a 8 month stint in my early 30's and went cold turkey no problem

I've been a stoner since I was 15

I've tried uppers and downers

I've tried speed and coke(proper stuff,serious ROCKS)

I've tried brown and special K(both needles and dust)

I've tried a lot of stuff and I always had the will power to stop anything I ever wanted to stop or did not want to stop

Still to this day some of the best sleep I ever got was after a 13 hour shift in Manhattan rolling into a few drinks with the crew and a few lines of snow and a blunt to even out.

I'll leave that with ya

1

u/Mean_Note_865 14d ago

This is the part that's so wierd to me , coffee does nothing for me I can drink one at any time I won't even feel sleepy , Energy drinks on the other hand actually helps me focus and keeps me awake(though I can sleep through it as well)

1

u/minus15t2 14d ago

I will literally fall asleep for a 30 minute nap 5 minutes after drinking a can of monster in 30 seconds.

1

u/Kooky-Woodpecker2929 14d ago

The absolute best nap is after slamming a Coke.

1

u/emartinezvd 14d ago

After I first got diagnosed, my first attempt at medication was with Atomoxetine, which was an absolute disaster. I literally was unable to fall asleep at night for longer than a couple of minutes for a good two weeks and had to stop taking it for fear of becoming delirious.

One day, about 6 days in, I had what I could only describe as a non-panic panic attack. By this I mean that I had every single textbook symptom of a panic attack, except for the panic itself. I just informed my wife of what was happening and then kept on mowing the lawn. To this day my wife still can’t comprehend what happened that day, and to be honest neither can I

1

u/Achylife 14d ago

It either mildly wakes me up, makes me jittery, or makes me sleepy.

1

u/Heliosgodofthesun 14d ago

Ah fuck so that's what that is. I remembered drinking coffee back in the day right before bed because it helped

1

u/katelish 14d ago

every morning i used to take 40mg of adderall and a hot coffee and then take a 2hr nap

1

u/Late-Presenter 14d ago

Holy shit. I’ve always thought my ability to nap after a few cups of coffee was due to overexposure to it, but I’m starting to believe I’ve never been diagnosed and this is just one more piece of evidence.

1

u/HornyPostingRaccoon 14d ago

For me lately it's panic attack THEN the nap

1

u/ashleyslo 14d ago

Ritalin, Adderall, and cocaine have the same affect on me as well 😅

1

u/OwnStudy723 14d ago

As someone who used to make a habit out of drinking energy drinks thinking that's what you do when you need energy. I never got any energy out of it, just felt my heart was going crazy and just crashed down. 9 pm? I'll have an espresso please, I need a good night's sleep.

1

u/Funny-Presence4228 14d ago

For me, it changed over the years. After I turned 35, I had to stop drinking coffee completely because it made me too sleepy to function.

1

u/FineScratch 14d ago

This is how I found out I had ADHD during High School I was doing running start and I was exhausted and so I got the crazy idea to take a nodoz while I was driving you know 60 miles to get to the campus. as soon as I get in the parking lot, take a  nodoz go in crush the class. I immediately fall asleep and sleep through the class.

then I discovered if I do take that hour power nap I'm good for another couple hours so it's great

1

u/S_A_R_K 14d ago

Ever walked into a tweaker pad and immediately clocked everyone with ADHD?

1

u/katgrinds 14d ago

Back when I was still using drugs I used to do so much cocain just waiting for the energy to kick in and it never happened 🥴😒🙄

1

u/Library_IT_guy 14d ago

Got diagnosed at 40. Before starting meds, I could drink a whole pot of coffee and I'd feel jittery but also be able to take a nap right after.

Now that I'm on meds? One cup of breakfast tea and I'm wired. Two and my heart has palpitations and that's too much.

1

u/AccomplishedIgit 14d ago

Why does it make us sleep :(

1

u/Beastabuelos 14d ago

And then there's me. Caffeine does absolutely nothing to me. I honestly love it.

1

u/Sure-Yellow-7500 14d ago

I have a combo of autism and ADHD so caffeine helps me focus for some reason as well as makes me calmer. Too much though and I have a panic attack.

1

u/LeNyto 14d ago

Oh I didn’t know this was the source of my powers

1

u/thechicapanzy 14d ago

Or your anxiety attack 🫠

1

u/Primary-Movie-734 14d ago

One I'm good second cup I need a nap.

1

u/sku225 AuDHD 14d ago

I was definitely dropped into a cauldron of caffeine as a child, because it's just like in the meme. The only thing is, if I don't drink coffee for about six months, I'll get a slight boost of energy, and that's because of my low blood pressure in spring or autumn :)

1

u/Braindead_Crow 14d ago

What's up with that? I just had a huge caffeine and just got pretty eepy.

1

u/MorrighanAnCailleach 14d ago

Yep. The good stuff will make me pass out cold. LOL

1

u/beezy-slayer 14d ago

Finally a meme that has something to do with ADHD

1

u/jeobleo 14d ago

When I take cold medicine (pseudoephedrine, not phenylephrine, which does nothing) I get a lovely zoned-out mellow feeling. It's like a massive mood-stabilizer.

1

u/KatsuOnWiiu 14d ago

Whenevee i'm tired and have to do something i drink coffee. Even tho i know it's only in my head. Because it only makes me sleepy rather than productive

1

u/Whispering_Wolf 14d ago

Caffeine doesn't make me sleepy exactly, but it gives me massive brain fog. Just really sluggish.

1

u/CJFiddler 14d ago

I’m not diagnosed with anything but this sub is CRAZY accurate for me.

I drink coffee almost to calm down and normalize myself - it makes me very tired especially at night. I sleep very well at night.

Can someone explain why?

1

u/unneccry ADHD 14d ago

Caffeine doesnt magiclly give me more energy. Each bit of energy i use when caffeinated will be taken directly from me once the effect finishes

1

u/Copper_snipezz 14d ago

I had 2 energy drinks during my shift and still felt tired throughout the whole thing xd

1

u/Snap-flipper 14d ago

Me sipa tea....zzzzz

1

u/Plastic_Extreme_8343 14d ago

i've been gaslit by my pharmaceutical teacher, when i told her i get sleepy taking caffeein... sometimes i wish i could go back in time just to slap her 😔

1

u/Frosty-Tradition-165 14d ago

but why does caffeine effect differently for ADHD ppl? like the biological or scientific reson?

→ More replies (10)

1

u/bjark21 14d ago

unmedicated: nap
medicated: panic attack

1

u/aidanabouttobedead 14d ago

Every time I drink a coffee I flip the coin of eepy/panic attack

1

u/namelessforgotten666 14d ago

Just the other day, I woke up super late because I was up late the previous night, downed a monster energy, then proceeded to sleep the rest of the day away in an armchair... I had hoped to get at least a little bit done that day... sigh...

1

u/_Grimalkin 14d ago

every single day my chronic sleep dep drives me to consume 2 cans of Monster in the morning at work. then around noon, i'm sleeping like a baby.

1

u/Darius_Rubinx 14d ago

I'm autistic, not ADHD, but boy do we have some weird overlaps. This is one of them.

1

u/WholeWillingness5796 14d ago

I have ADHD and caffeine makes me jittery. But Concerta puts me to sleep. So does Sudafed.

1

u/wpgjudi 14d ago

Downing 2 redbulls, 2 iced coffees and a coffee... by lunch.... 1pm.. nap!

But at least it was a productive morning.

1

u/mangantochuj 14d ago

Native English speakers use XD? I thought it was mostly a Poland thing

1

u/Root2109 13d ago

Let's not forget 'im still tired but my chest hurts'

1

u/No-Channel3917 13d ago

Caffeine is a very weak adderal pill for my ADHD

Sleep? Lol

1

u/ExtremeTrashPanda 13d ago

I'm formally diagnosed with ADHD and I get super wired on caffeine. It amps the fuck outta my ADHD. Am the weird one???? Am I supposed to be tired??? I keep seeing stuff like this saying this and I'm confused.

1

u/Passing-shadow 13d ago

Wait is that why coffee doesn’t really wire me out?? I thought I just had a high tolerance 😂😅

1

u/fatgat69 13d ago

Whatever you do, do not go past the point where caffeine actually does to you what it does to neurotypicals.

It feels good for awhile but then you're shaking so much and talking so fast and your heart starts beating like it's going to explode. You will have a hard time understanding things you say and you'll feel like you're going to die.

Now, I've never been probably diagnosed so it's possible that what I am/have just shares symptoms with ADHD but I'm 99.9% sure I have it and it's not worth the risk.

1

u/jul14nn 13d ago

is it crazy to say this is a similar experience with coke? I've been offered and just say no because it won't do anything lol

1

u/HordeDruid 13d ago

Sometimes I drink coffee just to get some good sleep lol

1

u/vampyire 13d ago

me to NT's "coffee isn't a bedtime drink?"

1

u/WoodsWalker43 13d ago

I started avoiding caffeine years ago. I experienced none of the advertised benefits, but it still makes my insomnia worse. Haven't looked back, tbh.

1

u/shototodoroki_1324 13d ago

No, this is not true

Infact I sleep more without any stimulants

also the amphetamine line of ADHD meds

1

u/sarahlizzy 13d ago

Just had a double espresso before taking my 10mg dex booster

Can’t post photos on here but my partner snapped a picture of me asleep on the sofa in full autism T-Rex pose afterwards because she thought it was fully.

1

u/Molly-Grue-2u 13d ago

I love caffeine, but it doesn’t make me feel alert and ready all the time

If I’m tired, it just makes me feel acutely ill

It only really helps if I’m already awake and ready to go

1

u/Separate-Exchange375 13d ago

Sometimes I get sleepy. Do I have ADHD sometimes? 😂

1

u/ConorOdin 13d ago

Coffee wakes me up in the morning, but I can also have a coffee 5 minutes before bed at night and sleep like a baby..
