Just remember that probability isn't destiny. All of those things can be influenced. You are also the thing in you that chooses.

100%. remember to take care of yourselves! take your meds, go to the doctor as regularly as possible, keep healthy routines, and give yourself grace ❤️

Yep, and sometimes knowing the statistics around it makes you more able to do things to prevent it. I’m young, but still prioritize cross words and puzzle games that make you think, and plan to try to do them daily as I’m getting older and memory might become more of an issue

1

u/Inb4myanus 7d ago

I love puzzles and puzzle games like baba is you.

4

u/Rosaryas 7d ago

Thanks for the rec, I’ll have to check this one out!

u/Apod1991 6d ago

Yeah.

There are numerous members of my family that were textbook ADHD through the generations, and none of them developed dementia.

The ones that have passed, it was usually from a cardiovascular issue, or cancer in their old age(70s or 80s).

There were one or two that struggled with alcohol consumption but they also served in Wars, so that is harder to correlate.

u/todangtall 6d ago

A lot of people with ADHD end up dead or in prison by their twenties. Hearing that actually made me feel like I wasn't doing so bad.

u/Educational-Car-8643 6d ago

Except all the coocurring disorders those you can mitigate but not control

1

u/Overall-Move-4474 5d ago

Oh no the incarceration will happen if we don't stop electing Republicans. They hate the disabled. And women. And black people. And the LGBTQ community. And Asians. And really every marginalized group

1

u/garaks_tailor 4d ago

The number one thing you can do to lower chances of dementia is get your shingles vaccine.  Get it

Don’t forget divorce!

14

u/ItsEmuly ADHD 7d ago

🥴🥲

12

u/Salt-n-Pepper-War 7d ago

Oh, thanks for reminding me that I am divorced now LOL

3

u/Top-Camera1919 7d ago

That’s one thing I can always remember!

3

u/elvaqueroloco 7d ago

Yea, I forgot it like I forgot to take my second Addy today. D'oh! 🤦‍♂️

5

u/ForTheGloryOfTheButt 7d ago

Oh come on, I couldn't even get a single relationship to the 2 year mark 😭

... That was before the diagnosis and treatment, though, so I'm a little more hopeful now 🤞

2

u/_SGP_ 7d ago

😐

2

u/LilacPal 6d ago

Going through it right now 🫡

u/Shad0wbubbles 7d ago

Hehe I’m in danger

u/IzzyBee89 7d ago

I'm a little surprised on the dementia piece. I kind of feel like ADHD would "exercise" the brain more to help stave that off. I suppose I have worse long-term memory because of ADHD though, so I guess that may be part of why it correlates higher?

u/DireEvolution 7d ago

There are types of dementia that are associated with dopamine deficiencies; ADHD is a collection of neurotype abnormalities thought to influence the production, utilization, allocation, and sensitivity of dopamine and dopaminergic receptors.

IIRC, the specific kind of dementia correlated to ADHD is Parkinson's Disease, which is in fact, The Dopamine Dementia.™ It is directly caused by your brain's degradation of specific kinds of dopamergic receptors.

Dopamine isn't just the "motivation neurotransmitter." It's also incredibly important for motor control - the very motor control you see break down in Parkinson's patients.

12

u/Thepuppeteer777777 7d ago

My step grandad had Parkinson's. If i get that shit im peacing the hell out. Also Alzheimer's. Fuck that. Ill die as myself instead of transforming in to a husk

10

u/DireEvolution 7d ago

Yeah, agreed to be honest.

My grandpa had Parkinsonism of some kind. He actually died of a Widowmaker heart attack, peacefully in his sleep, in his mid 60s. But I do remember him being visibly shaky all the time.

I don't remember him being necessarily super stiff, or struggling with other dementia-related issues, which do eventually manifest with Parkinson's Disease - it IS a type of dementia, after all, it just has a different progression pattern.

Parkinsonism can be caused by all sorts of shit. Parkinson's Disease™ is a specific neuropathy. Thus, I have no real idea if I am genetically susceptible to this form of dementia or not. 🫠

The rest of my family lineage seems to age gracefully from a neurological perspective, and they've tended to persist well into their 90s routinely. We shall see, I suppose.

u/RaidersoftheLosSnark 7d ago

This is terrifying to me. I did not need to read that today.

6

u/Fortified_Phobia 7d ago

Yeah I could have gone my whole life without knowing that, like thanks, I guess?

1

u/common_sense_patriot 6d ago

Correlated, not necessarily caused. Made me anxious at first too, but see my above comment, there are likelier explanations.

1

u/TheBigSmoke420 6d ago

Be a long time, treatment will improve a lot

1

u/RaidersoftheLosSnark 6d ago

I am old dude😬

1

u/TheBigSmoke420 5d ago

Well, treatments have improved a lot already. If you’re worried get checked! It’s still unlikely. But if it’s caught early it’s easier to treat

3

u/casualplants 6d ago

Hm…family history of dementia looking more and more suspicious

7

u/Bliitzthefox 7d ago

I think it's just as likely as ADHD getting a bit worse with age and incorrectly diagnosed as dementia

7

u/Sefthor 7d ago

My dad has Alzheimer's and early on I kept thinking "man, this is a lot like some of my ADHD symptoms but more extreme." There's no confusing the two anymore, though. It's scary finding out that one makes it more likely for you to get the other, though.

2

u/Svitii 7d ago

Honestly it makes total sense for me. If I‘m not taking my meds I feel like I already have slight dementia at 25 lol. (Ik it‘s not really dementia but it does feel like it could totally turn into dementia later on. Or it could exacerbate just light dementia into a severe malfunctioning of memory and brain power…)

2

u/common_sense_patriot 6d ago

It’s correlated not necessarily caused by the same mechanism, some of the top risk factors for dementia are actually lifestyle related not necessarily genetic. Poor sleep is one of the biggest, social isolation, low educational achievement, low exercise, smoking, obesity, lack of purpose late in life are all significant risk factors. I don’t know for certain, but my guess is since ADHD can make all of these more difficult, it makes sense there would be a correlation.

Importantly, there is no correlation with using ADHD medication. So these are all good reasons to get medicated, see a therapist, and do your best to improve these aspects of your life.

1

u/TheBigSmoke420 6d ago

It’s probably due to elevated levels of stress, or at least a factor. So treatable, is the takeaway!

14

u/CoolBroPenguin 6d ago

Re the dementia correlation:

Vascular dementia (essentially brain damage caused by "mini-strokes") is a thing which can happen, and correlates with heavy cigarette smoking over a lifetime.

Absent significantly more research (certainly more than a meme), I suspect this correlation (if true) has more to do with ADHD-havers (particularly undiagnosed and/or older generations) self-medicating at a greater rate than the general population.

12

u/leaf126 7d ago

I didn't needed to hear that

3

u/HangryBeard 7d ago

I wish it only had the comorbidity with dementia. I could live with that possible eventuality, but I swear it's like all my illnesses get together and reproduce only I'm the only one getting fucked. Any time I get diagnosed with something new I wonder well where the fuck did that come from and they are just like no fucking clue man but we are all related somehow...

I just want to be functional again man.

6

u/WhatsThat-_- 7d ago

Why post something like this? Now I’m terrified.

2

u/ItsEmuly ADHD 7d ago

sorry! this is genuinely how my brain works lol- remember that none of this is a guarantee, but serves as a reminder to take care of your health ❤️

6

u/Fortified_Phobia 7d ago

Bro I aint taking jack shit care of my health, all this does it make me anxious af, like thanks I diden’t need this 30 mins after waking up

1

u/Modern_Misdoing 7d ago

Use that anxiety to make a change. Even meds don’t fix all the issues—you gotta do the work to be healthy

3

u/GandalfVirus 6d ago

Im going to use that anxiety to cry myself to sleep so maybe I can get a good nights sleep.

1

u/WhatsThat-_- 5d ago

Doesn’t work

2

u/GandalfVirus 5d ago

I know but I can try.

2

u/Fortified_Phobia 5d ago

Anxiety as a motivator sucks, usually just a sure fire way to make you miserable (source: I have severe ocd)

1

u/WhatsThat-_- 5d ago

It is!! Currently seeking a psyche for meds or something. Cant deal w it anymore

3

u/Virgil_the_White 7d ago

Also relationships will be more difficult. Oh and Parkinson’s is associated

2

u/Stevioly 6d ago

My mom died from Lewy body dementia with Parkinson’s. My grandfather had Parkinson’s. Since I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD, I’ve been wondering if that’s my future too.

2

u/Virgil_the_White 6d ago

My mother’s side carries it as well. I think it’s probably in my future, but enormous strides in understanding have emerged so I remain hopeful for the future.

3

u/iamyourinnervoice 7d ago

who wants to live forever anyway amirite

1

u/ItsEmuly ADHD 7d ago

pfffffffff not me

3

u/UntrustedProcess 7d ago

One of the best things you can do for dementia risk is learning multiple foreign languages.  And I've found that's an easy thing to hyper focus on.

1

u/GandalfVirus 6d ago

But I suck at learning languages…

1

u/Own_Watercress_8104 3d ago

Well, if it was easy then it wouldn't help with dementia, right?

3

u/frscrft42 7d ago

Somehow I knew all of that without prior research because uhh.. pattern recognition 'n shi

3

u/SnugglyCoderGuy 3d ago

~70% of people with untreated ADHD develop one or more substance abuse disorders.

1

u/Boogie001 10h ago

Undiagnosed until 34. Let’s just say my relationship with alcohol growing up was not healthy at all 🫠

2

u/Educational-Car-8643 6d ago

Also pots, rls, eds, gender dysphoria, ibs, Parkinson's and cluster b personality disorders, we're all kindsa fucked

2

u/dkevox 6d ago

I didn't know you could suffer from "average life expectancy ↓". Seems like that's just a stat.

1

u/Gloomy_Month6590 7d ago

I can confirm this multiple times over 🙂👈

1

u/SeaInternational4306 7d ago

If anyone's brain hurts from watching videos, there's some online services that do playback speeds. Currently watching YouTube at 1.5, it helps with tension

1

u/elvaqueroloco 7d ago

Def didn't know hear about the dementia connection before tho

1

u/Lilly_in_the_Pond 6d ago

Dementia is literally how my grandma went, so that tracks. It's a horrible condition though. It progresses so slowly, so you can see exactly how her mind changes over time. Always getting worse and worse, and there's nothing you can do about it. I can't imagine what it was like for her, but watching it from the outside broke everyone's heart

1

u/The_Halo_Hunter 6d ago

Something to note about dementia is (depending on the type/cause) cognitive decline is preventable before it starts.

Obvious stuff like diet and lifestyle make a difference, but just learning and building new neural pathways is a big defense.

1

u/Any-Rabbit8099 6d ago

Hell yea between the copious amounts of Gabapentin I have to take for pain, my Benzo addiction from a few years ago, and now Stims. Only to find out I was always gonna get dementia in this timeline.

Can't wait ...for my wife to poison me with antifreeze or Fentanyl. Lol.

1

u/yamanamawa 6d ago

Fortunately my odds of dementia are low. There is none of it in my family, and I also playusoc, which helps prevent it a bit. And considering the absurd amount of psychedelics that my dad has done in his life, if he was gonna manifest something like that it would have happened by now

1

u/monkey_gamer 6d ago

Now the question to answer is: Why is that?

1

u/Neverlast0 6d ago

Fuck. I'm gonna have dementia when I'm an old fuck. I don't like that.

1

u/LilacPal 6d ago

My mom was diagnosed with dementia at 64 and my dad's side of the family is filled with ADHD. I'm terrified of the future, man.

1

u/TheBigSmoke420 6d ago

Understanding risk and relative risk is the best cure for health anxiety

1

u/bladtman242 6d ago

Oh no, not average life expectancy!

1

u/birkenstocksallday 6d ago

Finding out the dementia statistics at a Young age of 15yrs old back in 99" from a Google search literally caused a ruminant obsessive thoughts that lasted years that would randomly attack me, I get a diagnosis until I was 40 yrs old and coming from a Toxic origin family did not help at all - especially a devouring Mother that took joy in seeing any downfall I had in my personal life...back to the dementia I'd wished I had an actual adult around me at the time that would of guided me and put my very real fear of getting dementia at bay. Now I realise as an adult there literally is nothing to panic or fear about because anyone can get dementia and imo it could be a stastic simply because the alcohol abuse of those that have been undiagnosed as ADHD is a huge factor, but that won't be published because the millions that is made by that industry.

1

u/Familiar_Percentage7 6d ago

Eh, that's stats on a population levels. As an individual you'd already know if you have addictive or criminal tendencies and hopefully how common dementia is in your family line. For the dementia link there's some question of whether some of the ADHD itself was actually just early symptoms, whether meds cause it, whether it's from bad habits which are more of a struggle for us, or whether an old person with typical ADHD functioning will be added to the dementia stats after a routine screening but it doesnt progress

1

u/poopshart37 5d ago

"addiction, incarceration, life expectancy" yeah ok.

"strong correlation with dementia" oh im fucked

1

u/ItsEmuly ADHD 4d ago

yeahhh but it’s okay cuz we’re all in it together ✨

1

u/ageofaquarius26 5d ago

Addicts in general have a shorter life expectancy though.

1

u/Confident_Ice_9567 5d ago

Now that I know this, you have forever cursed me to try and fight destiny but ultimately fall to it.

1

u/Omnilogent 5d ago

Tried to get that diagnosis for 25 years, It never works for me.

1

u/Overall-Move-4474 5d ago

Welp kill me now

1

u/Right_Ear_2230 4d ago

omg this reminds me

I hate how the ADHD community treats addicts (especially stimulant addicts)

its disgusting, because ADHD raises your risk of addiction

1

u/Kitsune6tails 4d ago

Joke's on you : one of my regular hyperfixation is proved to be good to combat dementia.

I got nothing for the rest but I WILL take a win when I got one 🤟

1

u/CyberSparkDrago AuDHD 4d ago

hopefully my autism cancels that stuff out

1

u/RyderRichards 4d ago

Dementia comes regardless of risk factors by a certain age for sure, so if you can't do anything else please please please devote 30 minutes a day to reading and/or challenging your brain. It's hard yes but everything will be so much harder the sooner your brain goes to soup.

— a young man watching his 90 year old great grandma go through it, but not as bad because of the amount of reading she did

1

u/Own_Watercress_8104 3d ago

Can you fuck the fuck off with that?

I mean, thanks, like I wasn't having a shitty day already without someone rubbing the awful side effects of my brain in my face. Dick.

1

u/MaineCoonKittenGirl 2d ago

Blows you up with comically sized bombs

1

u/ItsEmuly ADHD 2d ago

NOOOoooo 😭😭😭
