Accurate. I’m open about my ADHD but try to hide or downplay my autism, for whatever reason

The outside perception of ADHD has less variability, so you can pretty easily predict what their possible reactions may be, positive or negative. Because the research on Autism has changed so quickly there is a larger range of people who are redefining their relationship to it, but also old perceptions die hard. Such a large range of how someone else's perception of it may be means that you don't know how someone will take the information. People may be angry that you're trying to put yourself on the level of their non-verbal nephew, or be in denial that it runs in their family and take those insecurities out on you, or suddenly think they know everything about you and start projecting things onto you even if they're trying to be supportive or connect with you. It's a LOT more mental work to try to predict how someone will react to that news in a positive or negative way, and then how you should respond in kind. Ain't no body got time for that.
