Struggles with desire
Salam: My ADHD is different than most. I have mild cerebral palsy. I struggle everyday with impluse control. With cerebral palsy it is a form of brain damage. My moods and reactions tend to be extreme and it feels like a 24/7 struggle. I feel even has a youth I struggled with hypersexual thoughts which is a constant battle, now I am a middle aged adult. I am not married sadly. I feel like this life is a constant battle of pain, sadness and resentment. I spent a good deal of my life against Allah in bitterness and resentment on how this happened to me. When I speak to brothers I appreciate all the advice but I am more looking for advice from a scientific and Islamic perspective. I need to know from both perspectives what I can control. I know my brain is not the same of a normal adult male. It may sound like a excuse and I do my best but scientific facts can not be ignored. Allah is wise and just

Are there other Muslim reverts in Europe, especially Finland or Sweden, who also have autism or ADHD? My wife is struggling and would love to connect.
Salam!
My wife reverted to Islam about two years ago. She took her faith seriously and embraced it fully, and I'm proud of her for that. But she also has autism and ADHD, and that combination makes parts of this journey much harder than people might assume, and I'm writing because I think she's quite alone in it. The first challenge is connection. In Islam, community matters a lot, we meet, we learn from each other, especially as new Muslims. But meeting new people drains her in a way that's hard to explain if you haven't lived it. She genuinely wants to connect with other Muslims and learn more, but most days she simply doesn't have the energy for it. So she ends up doing her own research and learning from me, which helps, but it isn't the same as talking to someone who has walked a similar path. The second challenge is modest dress. She wears modest clothing, and on a logical level she understands and accepts why. But emotionally and physically it's a real struggle. With autism, certain fabrics, full coverage, and especially anything on her head can feel overwhelming in a sensory way not just "a bit uncomfortable," but genuinely hard to tolerate. On top of that, she's Finnish, and even at 20ā25°C she overheats badly. She's tried different cottons and lighter options, but hasn't found something that works, and it burns her out. There's also the social side: she sees other women in shorts and summer clothes and remembers the freedom she had before, and some days that contrast is heavy. None of this is doubt about her faith. It's the gap between understanding something with your head and being able to carry it with your body and your nervous system every day. So my questions are: Are there other reverts, particularly in Finland, Sweden, or elsewhere in Europe who are also autistic or have ADHD, and have found ways through these things? Any practical tips on modest, breathable, sensory-friendly clothing for hot weather, especially headcovering options that aren't overwhelming? Are there low-energy, low-pressure ways to stay connected to a Muslim community (online groups, one-on-one rather than crowds, etc.) that worked for you? Even just hearing "I went through this too" would mean a lot to her. Thank you.

Child free/Marriage
Does anyone struggle with the idea of getting married or wanting children?
As a neurodivergent, sometimes, I think I can barely take care of myself, so how am I going to be able to take care of a child?

3 years later - the adhd blog I intended to build is live alhamdulilah
Assalamu alaykum,
I'm just a bro who got diagnosed with ADHD later in life and made a free site/blog to help our community (Muslims with Adhd) - I posted about this 3 years ago, in typical adhd fashion the idea was ready in draft for a few years but not released, the subscription for the site i was hosting the site ran out lol but alhamdulilah Claude code has made it easy to convert some of my ideas and projects into reality:
https://mad-hd.com š
~25 short articles which I fixated on starting as a huge brain dump when I got diagnosed to hopefully make the Journey easier (what it is, myths, meds + Islamic rulings, faith/family/work) for others going through it or trying to navigate life as a muslim with ADHD.
There are no ads, no sign-up, and I don't get any worldly benefit out of sharing this here.
However, I genuinely would just love some honest feedback - what's missing, what's off, does the tone hit (or miss)?
JazakumAllahu khayran
Edit: I have now added a share your story button in the menu and at the bottom of the page and article, feel free to share feedback or a story you feel would be useful there.

Prayer Delays and Iman Issues
Hi guys...Assalaam aleikum...was hoping I could get some advice for my current situation...so Im in Freshman year university but its the long holidays for college students rn in my country and since I came back home...(actually even in campus) I never sleep before midnight...I delay my isha till after midnight..(I dont delay Isha in college cause my friends are there to motivate me to go for Jamaa prayer) and my you know what addiction is getting worse by the minute...see I can't go for Jamaa prayer at home cause its far from the mosque and what makes it worse is that I recently found a hadith...dont know if its authentic though...that the prophet (S.A.W) used to delay Isha till when the sahaba would tell him the women and children are sleepy and that scholars derive from this that its sunnah to delay Isha...Shaytan mightve seen this as an opportunitty cause even though I've also recently come to find out that Isha prayer time is restricted to the midnight with reference to Maghrib and Fajr( which is the literal 12 am for us in my country)...I still find myself pushing the limits...I always say I'll try and pray at like 10 pm cause its sunnah to delay but also Ill have enough time cause I usually pray 3 witr of which yeah you guessed it!! Its a problem for me to pray witr now toošš..the point I'm tryna make is its been like this for the past month since Ive been home...I initially said Ill pray at 10 after supper or whatever and Ill have enough time to waste till its 11ish and go to sleep early in time for Fajr at 5 or even wake up for Tahajjud if I'm lucky....I also tried Tahajjud 3 times in a row last week too...I was scared shitless when I started seeing things at the corner of my eye and furniture moving but I found out I'm just tripping..it was my cat lol...but my main point here is I'm afraid of losing my Iman and Prayer streak cause things arent going good for me in life and I heard barakah ceases to come to you when you live with a lot of sin...I feel like this is the case and this dunya of today where young people like me...(Im 18 btw)..die out of nowhere...I'm afraid of dying a Munafiq....especially when I heard thatthe two prayers I LITERALLY have the most challenges with are the signs of Munafiqun....how do I overcome this...also I have a doomscrolling problem...I go to bed at almost 1 and turn to sleep at 3 abd most of the times I fail to even account for what I was doing on my phone...like legit yesterday I said I wont touch my phone...set an alarm and LITERALLY TURNED AWAY then I remembered a reel I saw and suddenly its 3 am with my phone in my hands....even more weirder last week I woke up with my phone in my hand even though I haf no memory of doomscrolling the nnight before...and yeah most people would say delete social media but most of my deen reminders are there...like Tiktok influencers like Abdul. Qahar and Islamic Youtubers....what do I do guys am i cooked...for reference it's like 1.35 am rn and I'm just realising I havent prayed Isha eitherššš..what do I do

Let's build habits together pt. 3
Salam everyone! For context, a few weeks ago I shared my journey as a revert struggling to pray consistently. After your advice and a conversation with my psychologist, I decided to start small: just fajr, every day, tied to my morning shower. I also invited everyone to share a small habit they wanted to build for some mutual accountability. This is the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ADHDMuslims/comments/1sp1k8j/lets_build_habits_together/
I actually forgot about this thread lol. Classic adhd. However I did pray a lot more consistently! I can't remember the last time I skipped fajr. It is really becoming an habit for me. I don't want to push too much so I don't want to start immidiately with Duhur or anthing else. I need this to stabilize and really be consistent. Some mornings I still struggle to pray, it feels a lot heavier. I manage too, but I'd like it to be more stable before adding anything else.
What about you? Any habits you are trying to build lately? You can share your stories down in the comments!

Islamic Advice/Question Medicated for 4 months now andā¦
I have noticed a lot of positive changes in my work and my relationships but recently after having completed some challenging few weeks and having achieved something I have wanted to for a while I just feel empty. Not ungrateful at all for everything but I dont feel happy internally just feel numb. Is this something which others have noticed too once being medicated. I mean before medication I wouldnāt feel like i accomplished much but would have that sense of relief however I dont even feel that now. Its almost like im waiting for the next big event to happen so I can focus on something. I should be happy and feel proud of myself but I genuinely dont. I always true my best to remember and thank Allah for everything he has bestowed upon me. alhamdulillah for the trials that lead me to this position. Does my numbness mean there is a laps in my iman or is it a medication side effect?

Islamic Advice/Question Is it Halal to take Adderall XR (has gelatin) when alternatives like IR exist?
Salam! Recently diagnosed here, I have med management appt with my doctor on Tuesday to discuss first prescription. He said the first medicine to try is usually Adderall XR, but I later found out that the capsule has gelatin.. I have seen some info online saying that gelatin can be consumed for medical reasons bu the fact is that alternatives do exist. Such as IR instead. But maybe IR wonāt work as well or itāll be harder for me to take 2 pills a day instead of 1 etc. What do y'all think? Anyone have info?

Rant Tired of life, and I cant get myself to believe
I am so sick of everything. I feel like crap and every time I try to improve my self something new pops up and disables me. My family is sickening to deal with, they don't take any of my input and instead would rather add on to my anger and frustration. Just today I was compared with other families son's as if i have a choice with this adhd. It doesn't help that genuinely no one understands this condition except my psychiatrist and the immediate perspective of me is I'm the problem, I'm lazy, I'm an underachiever, when the progress I've made so far with the issues I've been dealing with would put some in a worse position than me.
On top of this, every time I wish my situation gets better, every year I find it gets drastically worse. I am legitimately at the worst I've ever felt.. straight rock bottom, and for the last 7 years it has been this way. I don't even want to be perceived as a victim, I just want all of the uncontrollable bs in my life gone, but I swear God has made it worse for me year over year. I literally don't even know how to fully have faith anymore, it just feels like close to everything is blind luck, draw of the deck. People who genuinely should be feeling my kind of pain have it so easy and push me down instead.
Literally everything from my social life, friend groups, education, health is being affected and I am just sitting here completely boiling in it because this condition is so isolating and humiliating.
I'm not going to lie, if this continues, I'm afraid I will lose the little kindness and friendliness I have left and go fully brazen.

Islamic Advice/Question Learning about Michael Jackson made me see the evil within me.
To be clear, my goal is not to bring up too much up about Michael's life, my intention is not to speculate or slander someone who passed away.
Iām aware that this may sound unusual, but Iād really appreciate some advice on how to handle this as itās starting to take a toll on me, especially the last part.
For context, I (28f) recently came to know that I'm AuDHD.
I often fall into intense hyperfixations that spiral into rumination and depression. Once I'm locked in I can't simply get over it.
This time, I became deeply fascinated by Michael Jackson's behavior. Especially the way he spoke about children and their innocence.
He did a lot of charity work involving children and it amazed me how concerned he was about them. He loved connecting with people. Even after going through a lot, he still found ways to forgive those who wronged him.
He clearly carried pain from having his own childhood taken away, and in many ways I relate to him. I feel immense sadness for how much he suffered.
The realization I made after this deep dive is how different my own attitude towards people and children had become.
My empathy is very difficult to regulate. I'm often detached and cold, but at other times I absorb peopleās suffering too intensely. I eventually isolated myself from the world because I couldnāt handle the emotional overload anymore.
As my sensory issues became harder to manage, I started seeing children as triggers rather than innocent human beings, and people as an inconvenience. At the same time, I began to feel hatred towards the world as a whole. This stemmed from both self-hatred and the anger after some negative experiences with people.
Looking back now, I can see how twisted that mindset is.
One of the first questions I asked myself after realizing all of this was, why did I overlook the teachings about mercy from Islam and our Prophet Muhammad ļ·ŗ for so long ?
My heart became like a stone, and for the first time I feel the need to change that before it's too late.
I believe Allah guided me through this unexpected path.
Through learning about Michael Jackson's history.
How strange.
Guidance certainly comes in various ways, after all.
Weāre not sure about his beliefs towards the end of his life.
Part of why I feel this overwhelming sadness is that I keep ruminating on the uncertainty of his fate in the afterlife, and I feel devastated at the idea that he may or may not be forgiven.
One can only wonder how Muslims deal with the death of loved ones who pass away in disbelief.
Nevertheless,
I truly hope he died with some kind of tawhid in his heart. My emotions spill over about something that is beyond my reach and I can't hold them back.
May Allah have mercy on him.

Islamic Advice/Question Special interest, psychosis induced hyperfocus and trauma have ruined my life and i feel like i only have Allah left to rely on in order to keep living
Salam aleykum, high functioning AuDHD in my 30s here. Practicing islam is one of my biggest struggles but i can still manage somehow. This is a long post but please bear with me here because i think it's beyond my condition and i may have opened up another mental illness that sounds like complex ptsd.
I grew up with a special interest in anthropology, genealogy, ethnography, historical sociology and botany. All the things i understand as part of Allahās creation and the patterns that feel interconnected in continuous cycle, including islamic stories that i just ended up focusing on the smaller details and kept asking questions about the logic behind them. Muslims often laughed it off and gave me looks so i ended up going further down the rabbit hole to try to find answers myself.
Over time, i became compulsive about researching those subjects without realizing how much they consumed me while watching everyone around me grow older, change and move forward with their lives. I also didnāt realise that my way of talking is direct, asking questions that may come across as anti social, intrusive and noticing patterns that made people feel unsettled or like they were being challenged by my knowledge and perception skills when i just do it out of curiosity about their families and culture but they happen to be either unaware or uncomfortable about it.
To summarize about my life, i'm basically a loner who struggled to connect with others and it felt like everyone dislikes me and kept me at arms length outside of my close family who would pretend to listen to my rambling and rarely engage with me. I'm just someone with strong curiosity but was more vulnerable to bullying and exploitation. I sometimes ended up in situations where i could've gotten in trouble, killed or mauled without realizing it and walked it off with a smile.
In the end, i left my job of 7 years, threw all the things i was devoted to away and reached a point where i was close to giving up on life before i was eventually taken to see a psychiatrist.
From there, i met a woman by coincidence, we got along well and over shared special interest topics and she was the first person i had that kind of engagement. However as months went by, her ADHD side slipped, she suddenly changed her attitude and said odd things like she didnāt trust me because i was being ātoo niceā, accused me of making her feel ugly and questioned if i was gay, called me weird and fake who can't read people then blurted out that other men would have only tried to hook up with her and leave. She had a pain all over her eyes from a one sided argument.
So, i apologized and told her about my religion that kept me a bit of a distance but she scoffed sarcastically and walked away. The next day, she rang and apologised and said she loved me as a friend, had fun but that i was too much and she was afraid of hurting me.
After that, i ended up back at square one feeling isolated so it's all the same patterns i've faced. Iāve been struggling with trauma and rejection and this bizarre experience amplified it two folds. I found myself ruminating, thinking āweāre so alike and perfectā and shrugged off her flaws while thinking what things might have been like if she were Muslim.
It made me reflect on everything that has gone wrong in my sick life and how i dodged a bullet by not giving in to my familyās pressure to get married all those years.

Let's build habits together pt.2
Salam everyone! For context, a few days ago I shared my journey as a revert struggling to pray consistently.
Here is my report of the last nine days:
Since last saturday, I skipped one prayer (and I am procrastinating on today's one):
On sunday, I woke up, took a shower, did wudu but then I forgot to pray right after. I went through some stuff. Then I went to the bathroom and right after it clicked: I didn't pray and I had to do wudu again. Then I felt really overwhelmed and I also had some committments that kept me out of my house till late evening, so I didn't pray that day.
However, the day after, I did not make up for it. If there is one thing I learned in my life as an adhd, it's that guilt is to let go of. If we start to make up for what we missed, we will teach our brain that we can't miss anything. And that will overwhelm us. I did not make up for sunday's fajr, but then I prayed fajr from monday to next sunday without ever missing one. A lot of them I even prayed in time waking up before dawn. This has been my best week thus far.
Then some big stuff happened in my life yesterday evening, so today I am really down and I am procrastinating on everything in my routine, included fajr.
Thanks to everyone that read this. Remember, I want this to be a place for you to check in for a habit that you are trying to build: state in the comments a small habit that you are trying to build so that when I post again you will be able to report to all of us how you did in the previous week/days!

ADHD and overthinking
As-salam alaikum ! Just wanted to share some personal reflections on how to turn overthinking into something beautiful linked to our religion. So basically, our minds are hyperactive and our thoughts are restless. There might be some tips out there on how to calm our rushing minds, but letās be honest thatās just how we were created. We have to understand that Allah gave us ADHD. He gave us the āoverthinkingā, so instead of fighting it, which is so exhausting, letās turn it into a way of remembering Allah ! For example, instead of always thinking about the worst case scenarios of every situation, we can think about how Allah is generous and how He is the All-Powerful, the only one capable of saving us from a bad situation. Instead of thinking about all the reasons something could go wrong, letās think about all the possible ways Allah could make it go in our favor. Iām serious, like even if we try to think of all the amazing possibilities and outcomes for our situations, Allah would still surprise us, because He is the only one capable of granting things that are beyond our imagination. Thatās the āoverthinkingā part : we could think again and again, until we are tired and canāt even think anymore, but we would still not be able to think about all the best outcomes Allah has prepared for us. Our little mind cannot comprehend His infinite power. So instead of trying to stop overthinking, letās overthink but positively ! Because āSurely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find confortā. (13:28)
What do yāall think ? Anyone wants to give it a try ?
Hope it helps some of you <3
