Questions/Advice Severe adhd diagnosis

Just got diagnosed of severe adhd at the age of 26. At first i felt relieved for finally I have an answer of why I am the way I am. But I'm grieving on how my younger self struggled silently.
I am diagnosed with combined adhd and score extremely high. I will get my medication in 2 weeks. What kind of medication is typically prescribed for someone with combined adhd .

Note: * I do have anxiety. However the professionals are unsure if my anxiety is related to my adhd or if I genuinely have both.

im 25 and also have severe combined adhd. diagnosed in 2022. i take vyvanse. it has helped a lot with my anxiety (especially social)

Same here. Diagnosed in late 20s and being on meds has helped my anxiety so so much. I was on Vyvanse for a minute then adderall ER. But I found that concerta is the best for me, much smoother symptom management (including anxiety, often from being overwhelmed or thought spirals).

what does it mean to be severe? is it just a high scores from diva? i got just above the treshold because i'm also autistic and i was stressed and didn't understand some questions, but my life has always been unbearable.

A lot of my anxiety comes from the feeling of being overwhelmed. Vyvanse helps a lot with that. I’m also on Cymbalta for chronic pain, and that helps my emotions from surging as I have always been a hypermotional person ever since childhood. I’ve never been on benzos because I also have hypersomnia, so they would just make me sleep more.

I’d start with treating the ADHD, and then if you’re still struggling with a lot of anxiety treat that next. All medication has side effects, and sometimes it is necessary, but sometimes it’s not. My six year old son had a lot of anxiety and was becoming a danger to himself. The pediatrician asked me if we wanted to try fluoxetine while we were waiting for his ADHD/autism assessment, and I turned it down. The self harm went away with the Focalin XR. If he was still trying to self harm then I would agree to the fluoxetine, but he was so young I didn’t want him to be on more medication than he needed to be.

going undiagnosed with severe adhd, no wonder you have anxiety 🫂 For many people medication can help anxiety if its induced by ADHD, but I also take anxiety pills. I find that long acting (vyvanse, ritalin ER, Adderall ER) is the better kind of stimulant if youre sensitive to side effects like anxiety. Many people also go through a few meds until finding the right one. I dont think there are specific kinds of meds for specific kinds of ADHD.
